SATURDAY'S PRODUCE MARKETS
Chicago, Jan. a In response to the com
parativo steadiness of the wheat market
here, foreign markets, as reported at the
opening, came steadier in tone. The early
trading was done at not far from the same
prices as the closing quotations or the pre
ceding afternoon, and a shade of improve
ment quickly succeeded. i

keys, too,are higher and firm, owing to short
supply. A firm market for choice grades
of creamery batter and cheese is
reported. Common and low grades are still
a drug and prices are but nominal on these
lower grades. Eggs are in more than suffi
cient supply to meet all demands, and mar
keis are weak.

Coalers Make the Best Showine The Tables
Tnrneil on Now England at Last Louis
ville and Nashville Leads on tho Down
Grade Itonds ISetter.
New Yor.K, Jan. 9. The stock market was
still very active to-day, but the feverishness
nnd irregnlarity which marked yesterday's
dealings were also present, and undoubtedly
heavy realizations contributed to make a
general heavy temper. Tho liquidation wns
specially prominent in Louisville and Nash
ville, Atchison and New L'ngl.mn, while the
strong spots In the list were confined to the
Coal shares, the Industrials and a few of the
low priced specialties. The maiket, as a
whole, was much narrower than usual of
late, and a few of the more prominent shares
received tho gtcater portion of the atten
tion. The opening was strong at fractional ad
vances over last night's figures, Missouri
Pacific showing a gain of per cent, but
nrter further fractional gains, In which
Chicago Gas led, there was a general decline,
which was really cheeked only with the
close of business. Louisville and Nashville
took the lead in this movement, but New
England soon joined and the whole list
followed with the exception of Richmond
and West Point, the Coalers and
a few ot the low-priced shares.
A suspicion that New York and Northern
will not come in for any benefit from the
New England deal caused a material reac
tion in it, and it settled away from 26 at its
best yestorday to 22. Manhattan also
showed tho same influence at the close, its
final bid being 2 per cent below its last sale.
Tiieluinp in the Coalers developed great ac
tivity in Reading, but tho improvement in
price was of no importance. The market
finally closed active and heavy to weak at
about the lowest prices of the day. The
only losses of note, however, were 1 per cent
in New Eugland and U in Louisville and
Nashville, which rallied slightly towaid the
end of tho session.
The following table shows the prices of active
stocks on the New York Stock Kxchange yester
day. Corrected daily for The Dispatch by

THE WEEK IN OIL.
Quite n Spnrt of Activity and Advance in
Ilia Trice.
The market was tame until Friday, when
tho bullish influences that had existed for
some time made themselves felt, and the
market became active and strong. Excite
ment caused by the whirl was something
unusual of late, and attracted wide atten
tion. Saturday, although the level 'of the pre
vious day was maintained, thcro was less
animntion and trading was lighter, only
about 30,1X10 hirrels exchanging hands. The
fcellns was itiite bullish, however, some
traders soing so fur as to predict dollar oil
bcioro the year is halt out. This beimr con
tiiiscut upon the future of the McDonald
field, the degiee of interest taken by out
siders and the attitude oflthe Standard, ro-y
anticipations will bear considerable modi
fication. The fact or an improved market
Is good as far as it goes, but conditions are
so liable to change nnd the buying element
no tmall that loiecnsts for future operations
should be made with extrcino caution

COUNTEEFZITEBS TAKEN IN TIME.
They vvero Preparing tp Tlood Several
Cities "With Dangerous Coins.
Salt Lake, Utah, Jan. 10. A gang
of counterfeiters, which flooded the city
with spurious f.1, 10 and 520 sold p'eces
during the holidays, wos arranged before
United States Commissioner Greanman yes
terday. All entered a plea of "not guilty."
3Iary Gignon, wife of King Pin, counter
feiter, took the stand and "squealed on the
gang." She implicated her husband. Jesse
Gignon, "William Gibson, "William Cronk,
P. D. Spragne and Mark King. The men
were bound over to await the Grand Jury in
the Sum of ?5,000 each, in default of which
they were taken to the penitentiary.
The gang had its headquarters one block
from the police station and made 51,500
countetfeit coins. They were preparing to
visit Denver, Kansas City, Omaha and other
Eastern cities when arrested. The design
and weight of the money was perfect. The
true ring of the gold com made it one of the
most successful attempts at counterfeiting
ever perpetrated.
