A BIG JOB FINISHED.
Speaker Crisp Annonnces the Stand
ing Committees of the House.
LIST OP THE PBIZE WINNERS.,
Local Representatives Secure Quite a Sum
ber of Good Places.
TflE GEEAT INTEREST HrTBE HATTER
Wasiuxgto, D. C, Dec. 23. The
Democratic sections of the House were this
morning early iilled with members, upon
whose faces there -was a look of anxious ex
pectancy and cariosity. Little groups
gathered here and there, discussing the
probabilities and possibilities of the com
mittee composition. Although a great deal
of credence was placed in the predictions
heretofore made by the press, there was a
cencral feeling of uncertainty which conld
be dispelled only by the official announce
ment of the Speak'er. That centlemau was
late in arriving at the Capitol, being evi
dently desirous of escaping from the pres
sure for favorable assignment which would
be brought upon him even in the eleventh
hour.
Utile Interest for Republicans.
Everywhere there was an air of anxiety,
except -among the Republican members, who
gazed complacently around and now and J
tnen Danterea some iemocnuio coue&gue
who, according to rumor, would not be a
favorite of fortune. The general curiosity
exhibited upon the floor soon spread, to the
spectators in the galleries, and speculation
among them was almost as animated as
among those more personally interested.
"When, precisely at noon, the Speaker called
the House to order, he was looking very
much wearied by the arduous task he had
just completed.
In his prayer the Chaplain eloquently re
ferred to the death of Senator Plumb, of
Kansas. Mr. E. B. Meredith, Kepresenta-tive-clect
from the Eighth "Virginia district,
appeared and took the oath of office.
Crisp Announces Ills Committees.

The Officials of the Wabssh Road Anxious
to Get Into Pittsburg.
It has beeft learned that there is a titanic
struggle going on at present between power

keep out Representatives of the Wabash
gysteiu are known to have been in the city
last week. It has been suggested t'hat the
Wabash people may eventually make some
arrangement with the Vanderbilt people, as
the latter got a black eye when the Penn
sylvania secured the Pittsburg, Charticrs
and Toughiogbeny connection with the
Ohio Connecting Jtaijwar- Company. A
gentleman who knows much of what the
Wabash people are after was asked for in
formation, but he refused to be interviewed,
though he did not deny that they were
after some .connection that would let them
into this city, and said he hoped) they would
succeed.
It has been' suggested that they might
find a way in through the valleys of some
of our creeks not yet appropriated. It cer
tainly would be a great tiling for a con
siderable portion of country southwest of
this city if some arrangement could be
made by which the Montour Railway could
be extended. It seems idle to suppose,
however, that any aid worth Speaking of

the line, and only the exigencies of some
powerful pompany will produce the exten
