JI'KEESPORT TII1EYES.
Detective? Capture Three Very Im
portant Criminals.
A YOUNG WOMAN LEADS THE GANG.
She Is Found in Hiding- at Saints' Best,
Xcar New Castle.
PLACES TVHERE DAI) BOYS rLODBISH
McKeesport citizens hope that after the
present term of Criminal Court they can
take down the barricades they have built
around their houses to protect themselves
from thieves and once again live in the be
lief that their property is s-ecurc. For as
far back as the mind of man can reach the
bis borough and little city has been in
fested v iih i hat was believed to have been
a desperate gang of villains living in canes
and marauding the homes of honest people
in the protection of darkness, llobberies
were reported every morning, but outside
of the report nothing was done. Recently
detectives have been employed, and it is
hoped that safety will again be established.
Throe of the gang are in jail awaiting trial
before 'Squire Douglas, of Boston. They
will be given a preliminary examination
soon and will probablv be held for court.
The names they give are "Cat" Porter,
Albert Porter and Mrs. Amelia Carburger.
The latter is a comely woman about 28
years old, and it is claimed she was the
guiding mind that directed her two pals.
After Porter was arrested she left
the town, and was not heard from
until a few days ago. She was finally traced
to Xcw Castle and lound at a place called
"Saint" Re. " Porter is the youngest of
iiie three, being only 19 years old, and is
held under three charges ot petty burglary.
He has given the information leading to
the arrest of Walkins and Mrs. Carburger.
In speaking of the many McKeesport
robberies yesterday. Detective Murphy
said he thought the greater part had been
committed by bad boys. "The town has
more wild youths than could be
placed in an averaged-sized reforma
tory," continued Mr. Murphv. "Before it
was incorporated as a city, the police serv
ice wa necessarily poor, but now they are
doing better work and. when a few prose
cutions have been made in court, the rest
will get seared and obey the law. I am
not doing any work for the town, but am
well acquainted there and have been told
by the oficials that a thorough renovation
will be made"
CHECKS FOK TBAVELEBS.
The American Express Company's Plan
for Drawincr Money Abroad.
The American Express Company is in
troducing a system that will make it easy
for travelers in foreign countries to get
money without being identified and
put to other inconvenience?. It is in
tended to do away with the letter of
credit, which has served its day
of usefulness. The company is issuing what
it calls "Travelers checqucs " The limit of
each book is Si,O00, and persons can buy 23
jnany as they please. The checksrun from
ilO to 5100, and will be accepted for hotel
hills and other expenses without being
cashed, or the money can be had for them in
any jilace in Europe. The rate charged
is one-lourtn ot 1 per cent, wlncti
is cheaper than the letter of credit, and
avoids the loss in exchange in going from
place to place. Ilefore starting for Europe
the buyer writes his name on the upper
margin of each check, and all the identifica
tion needed on the other side is the similar
ity of the signature. There is a place on
the lower margin lor the name, and this
niU'-t be signed to make the check-good.
M. it Vaillant, the I'ittsbnrg agent, said
the company had located agents in all the
principal towns and cities in the British
Isle and on the Continent. The traeler
5s provided with a little book showing the
loci! ion of all the offices. In addition a
letter of introduction is given at the home
office, and this makes it pleasant for people
in a strange place. The agent feels that he
knows his man, and is expected to look
after his interests. On each check the
vaue of the amount in the inoncr of the
various countries is placed, and this makes
it easy for a traveler who is not familiar
with Ioreign exchange values. If any of
thcchccks are not used the inoncr will be
refunded. Mr. Vaillant says the system
fcas been in operation only a" few
1vr. but the results are satisfac
tory. The company auuic the risk of
forgery, but there is little chance for cheat
ing to be done. He claims the checks will
be 6 pood as cash anywhere. Only those
who have traveled much know how troublc
suhc it is sometimes to draw money on a
letter of credit. Men have been compelled
in wait in a tonn several d.iys until the
lisuikft had made the proper imjuirics.

CHANCE TOE A FOBTUNE.
Mr. Yl'rlght Say a Process or Machine for
Drying Fiili Is Kadly Needed.
"There is a fortune for the man who will
invent a process or a machine for drying
fish," said Thomas .T.Wright, of Nashville,
at the Monongahcla House yesterday. "Salt
water fish are a luxury in the interior of the
country, and only the rich can
buy them. The poorer classes
are shut out from what ought to be a cheap
.article of food. They dry the finest fruits in
California, and ship them all over the
States. I have often wondered if the same
methods couldn't be used to cure fish. Sev
eral hours alter fish are taken out of the
water, they are almost unfit to eat, and
transporting them fa a fresh condition for
any groat distance is out of the ouestion. If
I tliey could be dried for a small sum on the
spot, what a boon to humanity it would be.
"'When the New Orleans Exposition was
first broached, 1 was one of the consulting
directors. I tried to persuade Major Burke,
the Direc'or General, to give up the pro
ject, as the city was too far removed from
the trade centers. I suggested that it
would be a good plan to make a specialty of
fish. I designed an aquarium for him and
wanted specimens from the gulf and rivers
placed in it. The idea was to pav consider
able attention to their loods. Then I ad
vised the Major to oner a premium for a
drying process. He adm tted it would he a
novelty, but he was afraid to venture into
specialties. I should like to see the plan
carried out at the World's. Fair. It
wouldn't cost much and would be an ob
ject ot great interest to sightseers."
