THE PITTSBTJBG DISPATCH! TUESDAY,' DECEMBER 1, .1891.
SHUT OUT FINALLY.
Amalgamated Carpenters Barred
Prom the Trades Assembly.
SOME CONFLICTING STATEMENTS
Concerning the Character and the Xnmher
of the Jlen in It
AFFAIRS IX TOE INDUSTRIAL WORLD
The meeting of the Trades Assembly Sat
urday night was attended with some
dissatisfaction. The matter of ad
mitting a repreentath e from the
Amalgamated Association of Carpenters
was again brought up and finally and nega
tively decided. It has been reported that
this wao done in an underhanded manner.
Iast night Calvin Wyatt, one of the mem
bers of the assembly, made the following
atement:
"Some weeks ago a committee of five
from the Trades Assembly 'was ap
pointed to investigate the right of
the Amalgamated to be represented. After
a careful investigation the committee found
there were only 18 members of the Amalga
mated in Pittsburg. Ten of that
number had either been sus
pended or expelled from the Brotherhoodof
Carpenters, and the other eight did not have
a residence in Pittsburg.
"This evidence was all brought up in
Saturday's meeting and thoroughly dis
cussed. "When voted upon there was not a
disenting voice. The constitution of the
assembly would not allow us to let
a representative in, as it clearly states
that when a member has been
expelled from anv of the orders represented
in the assembly thevcannotafterward be ad
mitted. The Amalgamated Carpenters are
not recognized as union men, but at the
same time they are employed on union
work."
The Amalgamated men deny Mr. "Wyatt's
statement and say there are 1,500 members
of the Amalgamated carpenters in Pitts
burg, and will likely work in direct opposi
tion to the Brotherhood.
Fifteen Printers From Boston.
Fifteen printers from Boston with their
families registered at the St. Charles
Hotel yesterday. They have come here to
work in the job offices, and belong to the
Printers Protective Fraternity. One of
the men said they had been employed on
the Boston Post for the last nine
months, and quit the paper lnt
Saturday, when their places were
taken by nnion printers. Their association
is fighting the Typographical Union. One
of their principles is that each member of
the order is allowed to control his labor,
jnd If any trouble i siirred up by agitators
they are not compelled to go out in a bodv.
They are opposed to boycotts and strikes.
Most of them are jobprinters and have been
ofl'cred places in Pittsburg. The men said
they would work here forawhile, and it they
didn't like it they would go somewhere
else. They appeared to be clever and intel
ligent workmen.
The Barber's Executive Committee Meeting;.
The Executive Committee of the National
Barbers' Association met in the Jlononga
hela House last night, and fixed January 4
as the time for the national con
vention. The meeting will be held in
Pittsburg, but just where has not bjen de
termined. G. "W. Sillier, Fred -31a p
pish -and Fred Pasteur were ap
pointed a committee to make
all the necessary arrangements. Since
last Thursday the barbers of Tarentum,
Meadville, Harrisburg and Johnstown hare
signified their willingness to - join the na
tional body.
The Decision Not biven TcU
It was expected that the injunction case
aeainst the striking printers would be de
cided yesterday, but for some reason it was
delayed. The printers are of the opinion
that they Will win the case, for in most in
junction suits the decisions are quickly
rendered. In this case the ar
guments were heard just two
weeks aco. If the printers do lose
they will carry the matter to the higher
courts. The other labor organizations have
promised financial aid.
Industrial Notes.
The Wood's Run Tin Plate Mill will be in
creased to twice its present size.
Twelve printers were induced to give up
tbeir positions at the non-union shops yes
terday and leave the city.
The Western Plaster Board Company, of
rittsburg, manufacturers of the mac-kite
planter boards, is plastering the new Single
building on Fourth avenue with the boaids.
The Falcon Iron and Nail Company, of
J. tics, O., has placed an order with the
Lcechburg Foundry and Machine Companv,
of Pittsburg, for one of its impioved dou
bling shears.
The Herald Publishing Company, of Mc
Keeoport, yesterday received its charter.
The capital stock is $10 030. Its incorporat
ors are Jacob P. Nill, W. A. Miller, F. W
Torreyson, H. S. Dodge and Harry Palmer.
Slay Pass the Elsht-Dollar Bill.
General Monroe, who has been lecturing
before local Grand Army posts for some
time on the eight-dollar bill, left for Har
risburg last evening. He says he has a
quiet tip that the next House, though
strongly Democratic, will pass the measure.
The Democrats are very anxious to elect a
President next year, and thev are willing to
do anything to secure the influence ot the
old soldiers.
