IJtBHSKfl 5-jjsvjTi(? pfKsj, IFVTi THE ''PITTSBURG DISPATCH. FRIDAY NOVEMBER 27,' 189L ' K&zm. WITH THE REFORMERS Eev. Dr. Sutherland Very Slily Tats the Auditors on the Back. HIS POIKTED TALK ON ECONOMY. Thanksgivinjr Union Services Held by the 4 Various Churches. TUB TVORLD IS FAST GROWING BETTER 'Gathering Up the Fragments" was the theme of Kev. Dr. Sutherland's Thanksgiv ing sermon yesterday at the Second Pres byterian Church. He said: "God is the most exacting of economists. The whole economy of nature has been made on the principle that 'nothing be lost.' AH comes back in new forms and dresses to do new and valuable work. To a well culti vated mind nothing is so beautiful as econ omy. For some years during and after our Civil "Wax economy was a banished word. 2so one spoke it and few comparatively practiced it 'Regardless of cost' was writ ten on everything, from putting down a re bellion to constructing a bonnet. Men and dollars were used as if every rag could be changed into money and everv boy into a man by the turn of a crank or some patent process. A few years of such a course gave tone to society. The old spirit of economy that came from the fountain of Puritanism became lost. It is safe to say that within the past 30 years this nation wasted enouph to make it rich. There were few who during these years of extreme prodigality thought of picking up the frag ments. People looked only at the whole loaves. Even during the periods of finan cial depression, caused largely by these very conditions, this virtue was practiced onlv under the pressure of necessity. "The great crv now is that the publicleaks be stopped. It is demanded that fraudulent. rings be broken up. It is felt that the na tion cannot afford 3ny more waste. All this ontcry against public extravagance is a healthy sien. We may be confident that for the future more attention will be paid to the fragments. "Theresas a time when Tweed was the most popular man in yew York City. Peo ple thought he must be a good fellow be cause he made work so plentiful and money so easily earned. The unthinking populace looked upon him as their friend and benefac tor, andwhenhewasimprisonedmanyofthem considered him a martyr. All this came from the want of education and thought. "Economy is not really a popular virtue. The av ing politicians are not appreciated. Is it any wonder that there are so many useless jobs undertaken. But when the people reform and practice coonomy xhe w hole machinery of the Government will fall into line, and not till then. It is at the foundation of all real prosperity, individual and national. "We are so acenstomed to hold the mean man up to scorn that a great many are afraid to be economical. "We for get that it is the economical man only who can afford to be generous. The extravagant man is of necessity mean. He must pinch Fome place, and it is always an the wrong filr.ee. Let us gather up the fragments and ay np the good of earth in such a way that it will become a heavenly treasure. "After all, the best expression of thank fulness is to use wisely and well the gifts God has bestowed upon us to waste noth ing." THE CHTJBCH A2JD STATE. Interesting Sermon at the Union Services at Shadyside. The Shadysids Presbyterian Church, the Bellefield Presbyterian Church and the Oakland JL E. Church held their annual Thanksgiving service yesterday morning at the Shady side Church. Special music was a feature of the services. The church was prettily decorated. The altar was entwined with green. Plants and ferns were placed at various parts of the church. Rev. P.. S. Holmes, of the Shadyside congrega tion, had charce ot the t-ervices. Eev. Dr. JlcClelland, of the Bellefield Church, and Eev. "W. J. Holland, Chancellor ot the "Western Universitv, took part. Eev. T. B. Eaton, of the Oakland M. E. Church, preached the sermon. The speaker reierred to the prosperous times that have been enjoyed in this country during the past year, to the proclamations of President Harrison and Governor Pattison, and spoke of their recommendations to observe the dav. He said the American should thank God for his citizenship, and then said: "In our State religion must work through the individual to the State, and not through the State to the individual. The limit is an exceedingly narrow one, within which you can by State interference make people devout, honest or even temperate. The slowest and most unsatisfactory busi ness in which one can engage is that of trying to lift the world by appeal nfter appeal to irreligious and often im moral legislators for" action favorable to moral and religious matters. I emphasize Christian citizenship as the point where the church and State meet and clasp hands. The problems of citizenship, which have hereto fore defied solution, w ill quietly work them selves out under such dominion, and the Eepublic will stand to bless'the world and lead all nations." MEN ABE GEOWIHG BETtEE. Bev. Dr. Irer Delivers a Very Interesting Thanksgiving Sermon. Eev. Dr. Izer preached to the congre gations of -the Christ JL E. and Smithfleld street M. E. churches, gathered in the latter edifice. His topic was, "The Principles and Problems of Our Xational Life." He tpoke of the relation of the Divine administration to the origin and life of nations. He gave a history of the rise of the ancient empires showing that our nation began with the crowninc era. The era of improve ment, which had its birth at the fonndinc of this great Eepublic, has been advancing along all lines, and the condition of man has been"bettered with each century, this being particularly uueui me last century. Dr. er also spoke of America's relation as a nation to the general development of riiii-xuit. aim M:iuiii:e, me extension oi the Church and the Christian idea and the prob lems involved in the maintenance of our country as a great people's empire or a re public for mankind. The service closed with the singing of "America," in which the entire congrcga-tl'-n joined. A T.illc on Sabbath Observance. The congregation at the Second Metho dist Protestant Church was very large yes terday morning despite the inclement weather. The pastor, Eev. George Shaffer, preached on "Songs in the Night." He dtrelt upon the extent of Sabbath desecration in this country. He also tpoke of the great power of the nation, and the effect of the example set' by this great Eepublic upon other nations. The growth of good in the world was alto dwelt upon, together with the fact of the Christian religion in shaping the policy as well as the character of nations. Mr. Shaf fer also spoke of the laxity of the divorce laws in certain portions of the country, holding that great wrong, suffering and misery inevitably resulted from such laxity. 100,000 and Over Dress Goods for the Holidays. Ella "White, the charming little 14-ycar-old would-be eloper from "Washington county, who was arrested by Officer Yeager on "Wednesday afternoon, was taken back home by her papa yesterday morning. She was in a penitent mood and faithfully prom ised to be a good little girl in the future and never to run away again. She seemed to have recovered from her lovesickness for Henry Phillips, the brave, but verdant youth, who had induced her to start away from home three hours before her capture. He was kept locked up until after she had departed, but she didn't seem to mind it and forgot even to inquire for him. Phillips had not recovered from the in dignation he felt over his arrest, and when he was released savagely demanded to know where the girl was. "When informed that she had started home with her father he defiantly shook his head, saying: "They can't stop me. I'll marry her be fore anvbvdy can interfere." Mr. White, while in town yesterday, told Superintendent "Weir that he proposed prosecuting Phillins for abduction as soon as he returned to Tavlorstown. TEE JDBGE WAB EASY. Only Llsht Sentences Imposed at the Central Station Yesterday. HEAVY CABS DON'T GO. The Lighter Kind Much More Successful in Allegheny. A number of the new 16-foot cars, which are to supplant the heavy 24-foot cars on the Pittsburg, Allegheny and Manchester line, were in use yesterday. The motive power used is the same as that used on the heavier cars, and the improvement in time was noticeable. One of the conductors saicj the regular running time of the larger cars had been shortened by nearly six min utes on the round trip. It is understood that the old cars will be abandoned on account of their great weijjht and the consequent difficulty in handling them when heavily loaded. A Crash in Plates. The marvelous growth in is: eilst s iisro- t oisr Caused by families moving into their own houses; those engaged in business, and the starting of some of its man ufactories have so overcrowded the 300 houses already built that it is imperative that hundreds of dwellings should be. erected at ONCE. Dwellings can be rented or sold as soon as finishes. We have numerous inquirers FOR them daily: No quicker returns or better results can. be made in placing money for investments than in DWELLINGS, HOTELS, BOARDING HOUSES or STOREROOMS at ZKiEiLNrsiixrGrT oisr. Buy lots and commence building now, and they will be ready for occupancy when the numerous works located there are in operation. We will make special induce ments to those who buy lots and build at once. It is an object to us, and we will give all benefits to those building immediately. The most desirable part of Kensington was reserved for dwellings and is now graded, streets opened and ready for the builder. It is situated on the upper side of the R.
