New- York. Nov. 19. The Iron Age for
to-morrow reports tlie Xew York iron and
steel markets as follows:
American Pig As indicating the position
of the leading producer for this maiket we
mav note that the Thomas Iron Company
lias this week 6old 3.000 tons of foundry iron
to a consumer at a price to lie determined
latet on. Mr. Clarke, President ot the com
pany states, however, that heliasguaran
teod that there shall be no advance above
the price now ruling. Southern agents re
port the market verv dull. Ave quote Xorth
ern brands- $1G 75lSO0 for Xo. 1; $1G OOSJG 30
for Xo. 2, and sft O0JJI4 30 for gray forge.
Southern iron ells nt $15 25ijl7 TO for Xo. 1;

3 foundry, and $11 2311 30 for gray torge.
Spiegeleisen and rerm-Mangnnese In all
mangnmfcrous material the market is ery
dull. Consumers liavo been filled up with
ferro-mnnganesc before the combination
was broken, and in some caes dcliierieson
t-ontracts then made are being settled for at
present qtiotHtious. We quote 10 to 12 per
cent. $23 0?g24 CO: 20 per rent, 427 O07S 00,
and per cent Krro, $iT2 Mg63 10.
Billet and Bod 3Iarket LlfeVs.
Billets and Rods The market is lifeless,
no transactions of any consequence having
been closed in this section, whilo Piltburg
drags along on a $21 basis for 4-inch ordinary
billets. Wo quote; Domestic billets, $27 00
27 31 delivered; foieign billets nominally
31 00031 50, and domestic rods, $36 3037 50
tidewater.
stoel Hails In the East business has been
very quiet during the past Tieek, no trail
factious of magnitude hiving been closed.
There is some inquiry nnd some negotiations
are pending, but tneie is not much prospect
of booking he:".vy oiders in the immediate
future. The market, however, has been very
active hi the West. A representative of one
of the largo mills figures up that in the past
twoMceks the Western mills have closed lor
abo.it 173 000 tons, winter and spring de
livery, the quantity stated not in
cluding the Pennsylvania order. Even
running at record rate, this would amount
to three months' rolling for the two
Itreat mills. We understand that practically
all of these orders are for renewal work, so
that the requirements lor extensions have
not vet appeared in the market. The X"o
vcrober report of the Board of Control shows
shipments up to the 1st instant of 899 956
cross tons, standard sections, and orders
booked up to thenmo date for 1S91 delivery,
amounting to 1,062 (ITS tons. The delivcucs
during October were, therefore. 100,030 tons,
- while the sales footed up to 5,537 gtos tons.
Quotations remain steady atfSO 0030 30 at
l.astean mill, standard sections.
Nothing nig in Manufactured Goods.
Manufactured Iron and Steel Onlya mod
crate amount of new work is coming lor
uard. During the week the smaller power
house of the Broadway cable road has been
piaoed. The larger house will soon be con
tracted for, andit is expected to require sev
eral thousand tons of iron work. The plate
market continues in a very un satisfactory
.condition, with reports of low prices. It
is reported that the plates for a
ar:re vessel hav been taken at
a very low iignre. We continue to quote:

Old Material There is iiothinp- doing in
old iron rail: there Is no stock offering .and
little demand, with quotations uor.iinallv at
120 0i'g;21 00. Low sales in the Mahoning
ValU v recently cut off the Western matket
completely. In old steel rails business, is
light, and very low prices are mimed as
tlioo which might tempt buyers. The views
orthe latter do not seem to be above $14 00

Xo Decided Change Abroad.
The foreign iron and metal markets are
reported by special cable from London as
follows: The situation in the pig iron mar
ket is without decided change. Hematite
warrants are receiving more attention, but
Scotch and Cloveland arc traded in very in
differently, and the demand for maker's
brands drags wearily, although favorable
reporrs hs to sales of several descriptions of
finished iron are still given. Stocks in war
rant stores include 433 000 tens scotch aud
149,000 tons Cleveland. Latest sales of war
ranis were at 47s for Scotch, 3Ss 4J.XdCS Gd
for Cleveland, and ISs 41 tor hematite. Lib
eral buying. In part tor speculative account,
caused an advance of 3 in the price of pig
tm..prompt delivery selling at .91 12s 6d. At
the advance the demand slackened, how
ever, and in the absence of support from
previous conspicuous buyers, prices receded
6-7sfiJfiom the highest point, despite the
announcement that shipments from the
Straits during the first half month were
only 599 tons.
Copper prices have fluctuated within nar
row limits- and the market is steadier.
There is now very little pressuie to sell, and
lower prices arc attracting fresh purchases
for specnl.ithe account and lor consumption-.
Europcou spot stocks have increased
1.917 tons mid the visible snpplv 800 tons dur
ing the past fortnight Chile 'charters dur
ing the first half of the month were 830 rons.
The tin plate maiket remains quiet, and
no improvement is looked for until Ameri
can storks show signs of more rapid deple
tion. Prices are rather weak and unsettled.

the Wheat Market Corn Opens Itadly,

CHICAGO The wheat market was de
moralized over the effects of yelei-days
false report announcing the promulgation
of the Russian edict prohibiting the expoi ta
tion of wheat. The attention of many of the
traders was directed in attempting to ferret
out the author of yesterday' false report,
and the matket for a few hours received but
little of their attention. As a consequence,
the business was very light, there being a
general disinclination to buy on account of
the unsettled and somewhat timid feeling
which prevailed. The market, thereiore",
was natnrally weaker, and prices were lower
all around.
One reason for the decline, no doubt, was
the pottive contradiction of the dispatch
received yesterday, which claimed that the
edict prohibiting the exportation of wheat
had been signed. To-day's cable says: "The
Issuance of the decree forbidding the ex
portation of wheat was postponed until De
cember."' However, should the exportation
of v heat fi-oni Kussia become a law It is
doubtful if itwould have any material effect
in lessening the exports, of which is is
claimed about 73 per cent of Uussia's sur
plus hasali-eady been Pxtortcd.

there was asligbt recovery from the lowest

OFFICE AND STREET NEWS AXD GOSSIP
The most important transaction in real
estate that reached the final stage yesterday
was the sale by Black & Baird, through "W.
A. Herron & Sons, for Mrs. Mary B. Foster
to Dr. A. Fleming, of Nos. 420 and 422
Penn avenue, corner of Evans alley, con
sisting of a lot 39x115 and two two-story
brick buildings, for $34,000.
It is understood the purchaser bought this
property strictly as an investment, and will
neither occupy nor improve it at present.
It is part of the historic "Honeymoon
Square," which was at one time the most
fasBionable residence quarter of the city. It
is near the Leonard property, about which
so much has been said, and will be the scene
of some very important improvements be
fore another vear rolls round.
It may be interesting to note in this con
nection that a few years ago Mr. J. "W.
Arrott purchased two adjoining properties,
of equal size and similar improvements, for
about $18,000. Since that time, as shown by
the recent sales, values in that locality have
been marked up 100 per cent.
Realty Under the Hammer.
A large and evidently interested audi
ence greeted the combined efforts of three
prominent real estate firms to dispose of
valuable property at the Eeal Estate Auc
tion Board rooms yesterday afternoon.
Eight parcels were offered, four of which
were sold. The bidding at times was quite
animated.
Liggett Bros, sold two lots on Atlantic
avenue, East End, each 50x100 at S57 50 a
foot front. A. Leggate & Son sold a lot on
the Perrvsville road. Tenth ward, Alle
gheny, 78x138, for $1,600. Black & Baird
sold "No. 605 Grant street tor 811,000.
The results fully confirm the wisdom of
this method of handling property.

The advent of winter has led to an en
larged consumption of coal, with a con
sequent rise in the prices of stocks in the
carrying companies. The trade is reported
in a better condition than since the intro

Indications That the Year Will Be Turned
Without Any Stringency.
The local money market yesterday showed
.some improvement over the previous days
of the week, due perhaps, to the bright.brac
Ing weather. Heavy depositing denoted ac
tivity in general trade.
Funds were in good supply, and' there was
no change In the interest rate, which was 6
per cent as the rule. Bank clearings were
$2,309,152 18 and balances $372,872 65. Money
is working easy at all financial centers, and
Indications are strong that the year will be
turned without any stringency in rates.
It is estimated that at least $100,000,000 of
investment money will bo available after
January 1. This will be a powerful stimu
lant to business In all lines.
At Xew York yesterday money on call was
easy, ranging from 3 to 4 per cent; last loan
3, closed offered at 3K percent. Primemer
can tile paper, 50K- Sterling exchange quiet
and steady at $4 60 for 60-day bills, and
H 81 for demand.

BAD DAY
STREET
FOR BOOMS IN
f THE
RAILWAY STOCKS.
Dnqnesne Gets a Very Black Eye and Some
of the Others Damnged A Natural Re
action From Too Rapid a Pace Other
Features.
All the booms exploded yesterday, and the
market was dull aud weak throughout.
Xenrly everything on the active list was
marked down. It was bargain day.
The Tractions had been for several days
the backbone of the market, and when they
gave way nearly everything else went off in
sympathy. They had struck a too rapid
gait for the capacity of the speculative pub
lic, and their decline was only a natural re
action. There was nothing in conditions or
even rumor to affect them for better or
worse.
The lowest figures of the day were named
at the last call. Blocks of 100 to 500 Duquesne
were offered at 16, with 15 bid. Manchester
was offered Ht 37 and .Birmingham at 19,
18 bid. Duquosne, as will be seen, suffered
most from the reaction.
Pittsbnrg Traction finished a big fraction
better than the opening, but Pleasant Val
ley lost ground. There wns no change in
the natural gas list, except that Manufac
turers' was more bullish in the talk. Elec
tric was a back number. Switch and Signal
went off half a point and Airbrake a full
point.
Sales were: 10 Duquesne Traction at IS; 35
Pittsburg Traction at 47, and 5 Manchester
at 33. Closing bids and offers follow.

GENERAL STAGNATION.
A STRICTLY PROFESSIONAL DAY IX
THE STOCK MARKET.
Sugar Leads s Marked Improvement In the
Last Honr A Better Feeling in Rich
mond and West Point Chicago Gas One
or the Features.
New York, Nov. 19. The stock market to
day n as very dull throughout the greater
portion of the day, and the strictly profes
sional character of the dealings was empha
sized by the marked increase in the amount
of business done in the last hour, when the
market was subjected to severe pressure to
sell by the traders and bears who were de
sirous of making a quick turn on the bear
side.
The news of the day-was uniformly of an
encouraging nature. These influences, how
ever, failed, to stimulate reither buying or.
selling in a legitimate way, ana the trading
in the market was left almost entirely to
the professional element, which was in
clined to be more cautious than of late, and,
as a consequence, dullness was the only
marked feature of the trading for the most
of the day. A better feeling existed in
Richmond and West Point.
The Industrials, and especially Sugar and
Chicago Gas, were the prominent special
ties to-day, and Sugar responded to a rise In
the price ot the refined ana the reiteration
of the rumors of an increase in the dividend
by a rise of 3 per cent. The improvement in
the others was more moderate, and outside
of Richmond proferred, which, after open
ing down 1 per cent, recovered the loss and
3 per cent additional, closed at about first
price.
The general list opened with firmness,
prices moving upward during the first
hours, after which a partial reaction was
followed by general stagnation, only the
shares mentioned showing any animation.
The bears attaoked everything, especially
X'orthera Pacific preferred, Atchison, Read,
ing and Lackawanna, and while the fli-st-mimed
retired 1 per cent and Sugar reacted
1, the effort to recoup the short sales in tho
last few minutes' trading resulted in a sharp
rally, which brought Sugar to within of
its best figures, and caused a material up
ward movement in the rest of the list. The
close was quiet but firm at small fractional
advnnces lor tho day in most cases, while
Sugar is un 2 Chicago Gas 1 and Rich
mond and West Point 1 per cent.
Railroad bonds were quiet, but widely
traded in, and displayed a firmer tone than
stocks on tho moderate business transacted.
The total sales of all Issues reached$l,IU,000,
but Xorthern Pacific 5s was the only active
issue. Several marked gains were scored,
while the only impoitant loss was in Rich
mond and West Point Trust 6s. The highest
and closing quotations were:

Electric Cars to Woods' Run.
The JIanchester Traction Company ran
the first cars over the 'Woods' Kun branch of
their line yesterday. The cars are similar
to those of the Duquesne line, painted
white outside and finished with antique oak
inside. The upholstering is n feature. The
old car stable on Island avenue is being re
modeled, an iron roof will replace the pres
ent one and the building will be used as a
car shed and storage house.

CotrNir.Y Produce (Jobbing prices)
Creamery batter, cheese and eggs all show
an upward tendency under the-influence of
the cold wave. Strictly fresh eggs are grow
ing very scarce, and outside quotations are
easily obtained. Markets are abundantly
supplied with fall vegetables, and the situa
tion is still in favor of the buyer. Potatoes
and cabbage are particularly dull. Sweet
potatoes are heavy stock at present prices.
Poultry is not so plentiful as it has been of
late, and markets are steadier. There is,
however, little doubt that Thanksgiving
week will bring supplies sufficient for all
the needs of trade. Supply of bananas is
not so large as it has been for a week or two
past, and quality shows decided improve
ment. Choice stock is firm. The same is
true of Malaza irranes. Oranges and lemons
are weak, with a tendency toward lower
prices. ,
