TROUBLE ANTICIPATED AT AXT TIME
The situation of the striking miners has
not changed much from yesterday, but to
morrow will be a very interesting
nnd busy day in the district.
One hundred strikers, accompanied by a
brass band will go to Port Royal to try to
bring the men out. This will be attended
with trouble as the operators and deputies
have heard of their coming and are de
termined that they shall not make their
point.
President Eae did not conduct a meeting
yesterday, but the Miners' Committee did.
At Eureka, on the Baltimore & Ohio Rail
road, thev succceeded in bringing out 200
men. The committee then visited Port
Royal and Jacobs Creek, and induced the
miners to send a delegation to the mass
mectincs st Smithton and Banming to-day.
Tne strikers succeeded in keeping the
Jacob's Creek men out yesterday. The
operators here have decided that the strik
ers will have to leave the company's houses,
ana trouble is anticipated to-uay.
Lat night President Costello visited
H enry Florshcin's mines at Findle vville and
made an agreement with Mr. Florshcin
whereby he is allowed to run his
mines. This mine is under contract to
supply the gas company of Wheeling,
:ind it was on the condition thatlie would
fill tiiis contract only that Mr Costello
acreed to let the men w ork. They will re
cei e 9J cents and are to pay 5100 per week
toward the benefit of the striking miners.
National President Rae said last night
that he Ohio miners had not been asked to
rome out yet, but he wouldn't say whether
they w ould be.

The men employed at , Jones ; Laugh
lins, Oliver Iron and Steel Company and
the Upper and Lower Union Mills of Car
negie, Phipps & Co. were reported to have
refused to work the steel billets made at the
Duqucsne works. The management of
these works say they know nothing about
it, and they do not think the cmploves will
make such demands. President AVeihe, of
the Amalgamated Association of Iron
AVorkers, said yesterday atternoon that he
had heard nothing of it.

A Coal Famine.
Manr of the small towns located along
the Ohio river and a number of miles oft" the
railroads are suffering for coal, on account
of the low water. There is plenty of coal
Ivin? along the river, and when the rise in
the river comes there will be 12,000,000
bushels of coal ready to ship. In New Or
leans coal is selling at 43 cents per bushel.

lie Admits That the Cliicago Fair May Be
a Success.
The first St. Louis man to admit that the
"World's Pair at Chicago may be a success
is Colonel E. D. Meier, a well-known iron
merchant, who is stoppine at the Duqucsne.
He says the people of Chicago have dropped
their fight over local questions, and that
they are now all working together to make
the fair in reality a "World's Fair.
St. Louis, he said, will do all
it can to make the Columbian
Imposition a success, but in case Chicago
;rcts a swelled head and attempts to spread
out toward the south, he thought it prob
able that St Louis would extend its lines
and take in Chicago.
Interring to the political situation,
Colonel Meier said: "I have seen tin plate
manufactured, aud the Democratic cry that
it has beerr a failure will be a boomerang in
a fen months. In St. Louis Congressman
2 ied ringhaus has built a large tin plate mill,
and in a fesr months will have it in full
operation. The political situation in St.
Louis is one of the most peculiar in the
country. Both parties have tv, o branches
the silk stockings and the hoodlums. The
four sections are about equal in size, and at
every election engage in a rough and tum
ble fight. The municipal election next
spring will be the liveliest on record. The
hoodlums are now in power, and it is likely
the silk stocking elemeni will unite to
knock them out.

The initial ireight lines east of Pittsburg
have changed the rates on structural and
bridge iron from fifth to sixth clas From
Pittsburg to Chicago the rate has been re
duced from 17" to 15 cents per ton; to
Milwaukee, from 19 to 17 cents; to the
Mississippi river or Hast St. Louis, from
J2 to 18i cents.
The bridge builders are unusually bnsv,
the only drawback being the great trouble
in securing cars to transport their staple.
Cars are short on all lines, both east and
wet of Chicago. The Western roads have
'.ven over all their cars to the grain ship
pers, while the coal and coke trade monop
olize the Eastern demand. Traffic is quite
heavy on all the roads, and no road is com
plaining of a dearth of business.
