A BROAD FIELD IN TEMPERANCE WORK
The Young Peoples' Convention in the
First United Presbyterian Church, - Alle
chenv, was continued yesterday. T. J.
Gillespie presided. In the afternoon
first address was delivered by Rev. "W.
Wilson, whose subject was "Work in
the
E.
the
Congregation,"
He said that a prayer meeting should be
all that the name implies. There should be
prayintr. and lots of it. People had been
talked to death, but no one was ever prayed
to death. The idea should be to get every
body interested, and place npon them some
responsibility. This would keep them in
terested. "Work Oufbide the Congregation" was
the topic handled by Georpe M. Paden. He
lienan with the statement that the work of
all Christians, and particularly the voting
people, as the evangelization of the
world. This would include the evangeliz
ing of the vast multitude of foreigners who
come to this countrv, the Huncarians,
Italians and others who have no knowledge
of God,and who.if not evangelized, ill bring
this countrv to ruin. There is al-o
work in India. Africa. China, Japin and
iher foreign fields as well as home mis
sions. Meetings of young people could be
made interesting by the gleaning of facts
about these misior.sand illustrated pictures
or the mission iieleH
"Work as Individuals" was discussed by
Iter. If. 31. Russell. He t-aid that what
was most needed in the church to-day is
"men: persons of indivfdual efficiency.
Christ's example should be foUowed as fie
was not only ati organizer but an individual
woiker.
LOW VALVE ON feOlTLS.
Oneof the troubles of the present is that
Hie value of the human soul was underesti
mated. Great results may spring from Ut
ile things, :i for example,, some time ago a
kite was. blown across the mighty Niagara
bv a thrtad, this was followed
by a stiimr. then a cable and
tfien followed a great suspension
bridge that aids commercial intercourse
letwecn no mighty nations. Years ago
there was a baby found in the streets ot
London and plaeed in a hospital. The.baby
was called Thomas because that was an easy
name, and Hi idse because it was found near
a bridge. That child grew up and became a
missionary, and was the means of bringing
Ihous-ands of souls to Christ.
These addresses were followed by brief
testimonials from pastors to the efficiency
of young people's work. They sairl the are
the" right hand of power in the church. By
their work the community had been im
proved, the church meetings are better and
there is more praying in the church and at
home.
The question box was conducted by Kev.
li S. McKitr irk, who had but tew questions
to answer.
During the morning meeting Mr. Tagjrart
gave the young people some encouragement
in their work. He said the good they ac
complished greatly assisted in building up
the church. 2sot long since the Young
Mens' Christian Association was unknown,
but now other organizations with similar
aims are springing up all over the country.
3Irs. J. K. Phillips followed, and spoke to
the young people in a' similar strain.
INFLUENCE Or WOMEN.
J. J. Porter next spoke on the subject,
"Relation of voung people to temperance."
The pitfalls and temptations of all kinds
seem to increase rather than decrease as the
sgc progresses. Young people have not
only to guard themselves against tempta
tion, but their influence, especially that of
young ladies, is exceedingly strong. Young
people can often reach the hearts of persons
of their own .age better than people of ma
Hirer years.
," The church was crowded last evening at.
Jlic last meeting, lne meeting opened w ith
praver and praise conducted by the Rev.
S. J. Shan. It consisted mainly of singing
by. the chorus. At its conclusion several
addresses on the subject "In His Xame"
-tverc made. The first was by the Rev. Dr.
.7. K. JloClurkin, who spoke on the sub
topic "Uy His Authority." He said that
your honor comes from the fact that all you
receive is in the name ot the King.
His young friends had the power to go
out, plead and by His strength and author
ity they could bring the erring ones to
Christ Continuing he went on to show the
effects of Christianity. In the beginning a
man could be bought in Rome for 500.
'.'How much," he asked, "could you buy a
man there for now? Xot for silver or
gold, because they know they can hardly be
redeemed by blood of the Blessed
Redeemer."
After the singing of Psalms by the choir
the second speaker, the Rev. Joseph Kyle,
spoke on "In His Strength." He said that
ire are helpless ourselves, and . the sooner
we realize that fact the better. Paul
learned the lesson when he realized his
weakness. What is in God's name can't
tail. Strength, he said, was to be obtained
by leaning on Goo.
"for His Glory" was the substance of the
remarks by Rev. .1. S. JIcKee. If the
"work, he -aid,as in the name of Christ and
for Christ, then it was lor theglory of Christ;
we must have liefore us that tact. It is the
highest and grandest reward. The motive,
too, is to glorify Christ.
In conclusioh a brief consecration service"
was conducted by the Rev. J. G. Kennedy.
He 6aid, in substance, there should be the
whole surrender of the self to God. Siltnt
prayer by the congrecra ion followed, and
the convention concluded with singing.
" Kept His Promise to Judge -White.
"W. J. Adams was married a lew days ago
to Miss Katie Moore, at Camden, N. J. It
is said to have been an elopement Adams
runs a hotel in the West End. When he
was given a license last winter he'promised
Judge White to marry. He felt that unless
he fulfilled his promise within a year the1
Judge would refuse him a license when he
came np the next time. Katie's Moore's
guardian couldn't see the force of this argu
ment, and so they eloped.
All the Arrangements Made.
The St. John's congregation held their
final meeting last evening and completed
arrangements for the reception to be tend
ered to Bev. O. P. Gallagher, who will
arrive in this city this evening after a three
months' tour of European countries. The
affair will take place at the church at 7:50 p.
M. Rev. Father Gallagher will be escorted
from Union station to the church by his
congiegation. Joseph McCarthy will act as
marshal of the parade.

Delegates to the St. Andrews Convention
Welcomed Home.
At St. Andrew's Episcopal Church last
evening was held a meeting of the lay mem
bers of that and other congregations to wel
come, horae the delegates from the National
Convention of the Brotherhood of St. An
drew's at St Louis.
Dr. White, rector of St Andrew's
Church, presided with W. H. Falkner,
Esq., as Chairman of the chapter. Kev. Dr.
During, of Philadelphia, and Mr. Henry
Silk, of New Yor, who were among the St.
Louis delegates, stopped over ihere last
night and addressed the meeting.
Dr. During described the convention and
its effects from a ministerial point of view,
wHle Mr. Silk, one of the pioneer members
of the Brotherhood, gave a layman's im
pressions. Both were highly interesting,
and in the course of their remarks it was de
veloped that while the brotherhood is not
very strong, here, there being but eight
chapters in the two cities, it has a large
membership in nearly every other section
of the country, particularly in the East,
and there were delegates present from near
ly every large city in the country.
The speakers urged the local members to
stir up enthusiasm among the laymen of
Allegheny county to organize new chap
ters and strengthen the organization here,
as well as to assist the ministers in the
church work, for which the Brotherhood
was devised.
Disheartened and Wanting to Die.
A man giving his name as Steve Connors,
poorly clad and in an almost unconscious
condition, -tfas found lying in a field above
the -Pittsburg end of the iSharpsbnrg bridge
last night about 8 o'clock. Officer Smith took
him to Pojice Station No. 5, where the man
was given a warm snpper and medical aid
was called in. Connors declined to say
where he was from or where his friends
were. He told Sergeant Berry that he nad
gone out to the field with the intention of
lying down to die. Ha said he had no
friends here and alter looking in vain for
work, he became disgusted and concluded
the only thing for him to do was to end his
life. Connors is about 35 to 38 years of age,
and seems like an intelligent man.
Died Sitting in a Chair.
The body of William Edwards is lying at
the morgue awaiting burial. He was found
yesterday morning seated in a chair in the
stable of C. R. McCutcheon, for whom he
worked, on Neville street. He must have
died during the night as he was
preparing to go to bed or early
in the morning when he arose. He was
but partly dressed. 3Ir. McCutcbeon,
thinking lie was a long time in getting out
to breakfast, went to call him, and fou' d
him dead. Dr. Bex was called, but death
had come to him some hours before. Ed
wards was about 25 years old and married,
his wife being some place in the East End.
A Fitzsimmons Witness Killed.
Coroner McDowell was notified yesterday
of the death of Nicholas Doenges, a coal
miner, working in the Munhall mines, on
the Pittsburg, Yirginia and Charleston
Railroad. A partial inquest was held, to
be concluded to-day, before 'Squire Oejfner,
of Homestead. Doenges was only 17 years
old. While workinc in a -room he was
caught by a fall of slate and had his neck
and back broken. The boy lived with his
parents in a house which was the nearest to
that occupied by Fitzsimmons, the murderer
of Detective Gilkinson, and was a witness
at the trials of that culprit.
A Southern Railroad Magnate.
R. H. Coleman, President of the Jackson-1
ville, Tampa and Key West Railroad, ar
rived in his special car at the Union depot
last night, on his way to -California for the
winter. His family accompanied him. Mr.
Coleman declined to talk on politics, but
said that the Southern States were rapidly
pushing forward in every way. The rail
road that be represents passes through an
immense phosphate country over 150 miles
in extent, which is rapidly being developed.
Everything is in a prosperous condition.
