I:'urnarein?ii Down to Red Hock. The output is so large and there are so rsaay on the lookout lor imsmess mat it seems almost hopeless to attempt anything more than to keep machinery moving with oot making further concessions in prices. From all wc can learn, fiimaceiiicn in this vicinity are not inclined to go loner: in tact some of them have withdrawn from the market, refusing to accept even jircsent rates for Uessemer and Gray forge. These jart ies have an abiding faith that prices will certainly rule higher soon, although even those who were the most conservative have been under the necessity of readjust ing their idtas in regard to dates. Some parties contend the greater the de lav the prcsier will be the reaction when it does come. The features of the neeic past have been the upward movement of garden stuff and dairy products. Sharp frosts have served to knock out tomatoes and roasting ears, and prices arc more than double what they were a week ago. Among the new things that have arrived, within the week arel'Iorida oranges and Malaga lemons. Grapes are higher and firm. Peaches are virtually a thing of the past for this season. Our markets have been overstocked with potatoes for some days past and prices have found a loner'level. There is not likely to be a better time this year to lay in winter potatoes, as pricesare lower than they have been for years. The cost of potatoes is now about ihi- sjme ner barrel us it w as ner bushel this time last year. Choice creamery butter lias renehed such a price that the average con sumer turns to oleo. Asa result demand lor genuine butter has diminished in the past week. As Hallow 'Ken and Thanksgiving draw near poultry supply is on the increase. Turkeys abound and demand for the same is good. Yes terday brought to light another transaction of about the same magnitude in the same locality. Mr. Graham Scott sold about 29 acres for $115,000, this being at the rate of nearly 51,000 an acre a slightly higher figure than teccired from any former sale in that locality. This ground will be laid out in lots which will be put on the market next spring. Almost a Deal. It was reported yesterday that the Dal zell property, on tlie northeast corner of Fourth and Penu avenues, had been sold through the agency of George Johnston & Co. for 550,030. 3Jr. Johnston was asked for information on the subject. He said the story was premature. The property had not changed hands. An offer of 533,000 had been refused. It was held at about 560,000, a small difference in so large a deal. Tuis property is well-known to all old citizfcsns'jaS the homestead of the late James DalzeiTnr It is a landmark in that part of the city. The lot is 00x157, and the house is an old-fashioned brick dwelling. It is one of the best corners in the city, being on the main line of travel to the Exposition. Should the pending deal go through the house will be razed to make room for an elegant business structure. An Interesting Rumor. Another report yesterday was to the effect that the Spcer property, on Penn avenue, near Garrison alley was about to change ownership. A Bint to Owners. It is no secret that the only obstacle to greater activity in the real estate market comes from tlie owners. They ask more than buyers are able or willing to pay. Ot course, good reason for this is found in the rapid growth of the city. But there is an- L other side to the matter. A great deal of the property that is practically out of the market on account of high prices is unde veloped, and its enhancement must neces sarily be slow. Bare gronnd is of little value. If sold and built up.it would yield a handsome income. One acre improved is worth two in the rough. Besides, every acre or lot kept out of the market is a detriment to the city. It pre vents somebody from building a home or a business house. If owners would moderate their views a little they would soon find customers for all the property they have to sell. Business News and Gossip. The schoolhouse at Edgewood is about ready for the roof. Cold weather hns stimulated the demand for both anthracite and bituminous coal, and stocks are declining. Two prominent real estate brokers were seen yesterday taking observations in Cherry alley. It is known there is consider able property there for sale. The Wheeling Bridge and Terminal Com pany and the 'Wheeling and Lake Erie Bailwav Company have come to an agree ment wnifch takes the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway into the city of Wheeling to a connection with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. James W. Drape &Co. report an offer of 590,000 tor a piece of downtown business property. A contest is said to have arisen between the Distillers and Cattle Feeders' Company and the Kentucky distillers, growing out of action by the Cattle Feeders' Company. There is more 6 per cent money in the market than there was at the beginning of the month. At the last call yesterday Electric scrip was oflered at 70. Three building permits were issued yes terday. The only one of importance was for a brick two-story and mansard dwelling on Liberty street, Twentieth ward, to cost 53, 000. The other two were for improvements valued at 5388. Bonds were quoted on 'Change yesterday as iollows: Allegheny Valley Railroad in come coupon 7s, 1894, 25 bid: Pittsburg, Cin cinnati and St. Louis Railroad first mort gage registered 7s, 1900, 114 bid; Citizens Traction 5s, 105 bid, 106 asked; Pitts burg Traction 5s, 103)f; bid. The total amount of gold received from abroad since September 12 is 521,404,000, and more is on the way. Tho General Market DnII, bnt Nearly Everythlns Scores Slight Gains Vails Have the Hest of the Fight Over St. Fanl Largest Advance In Beading. New Yoke, Oct. 23. Tho stock market to day gave no indication that there was any more than tho usual pro.'essiornl operations going on, but tho tone was firm to strong, and, while tho general market was dull and featureless, a few of tho leading stocks and a few specialties were remarkably strong, and served to redeem the market from ntter stagnation. The foreigners were buyers and sellers by turns, and as the local operators are'now disposed to follow the lead of tho foreign ers, who are not able to lead any material speculation, tho movements in the market, except in those shares which aro affected by special causes, are insignificant and dull, ness marked the dealings. The principal contest between tho fac tions to-day was in St. Paul, and the bulls had rather the better of it, especially dur ing the forenoon, when tho price was forced up nearly 1 per cent, the advance being well held throughout the day despite vig orous efforts to cause a reaction. Heading was also one of the most promi- ent stocks in the torenoon and the buying was largely for Philadelphia account. An other stock which made a sudden and marked advance was Kiclimond and West Point. The Vandcrbilts to-day, with tho ex ception of Michigan Central, seomed to have lost all their late strength, and New York Central sold down to 113 against 115 at the highest point of the late lise, and the others were inclined to droop. Among the inactive shares Louisville, New Albany and Chicago lost a large traction, but Manitoba was speciallv strong. riin from Illg to 115. The Industrials were quite neglected and no other feature of iinpoit ance marked the trading. The opening was firm and the market con tinued 10 siiowHirungm tnrougiiout the dav, although the best prices were generally leached in tho latter portion of the first hour. Alter that the fluctuations in the general list were insignificant, and no de cided tendency of prices in either direction was to be noted. Tho market finally cloed dull, but at fractional gnins for the day in almost everything, Beading, with K per cent, showing the largest advance auioii"' the nctive shares. Railroad bonds were again quite active the sales of all issucsieaching$,440,000: with heavy rinding in Atchison incomes, IUch mond and West Point 5s, Heading 4s and Kio Grande Western firsts. The last three bonds mentioned weie remarkably strong. The rest of the list, however, were not far be hind, and while there was not so much activity tne screngm was equally as great. Country Produce Jobbing Prices The high prices of creamery butter have served to lessen demand of late, and, while receipts are light, markets are slow. When butter goes above 30c per pound, imitations are sold more freely "to the multitude. Dealers in oleo are reaping their harvests at this time. Supply of poultry is on the gain, aud demand is fairly active. Ileceipts of live turkeys to-day were the largest of the season. Potatoes are quiet and slow, receipts being still in excess of" demand. Grapes are in bountiful supply, bat good stock is firm at outside quotations. Peaches are close to their end. Florida oranges and Malaga lemons are now to the front. Guffey Claims (he Business Is Too Hazerdons to Stand More Burdens. The proposition of Commissioner Mercer to tax not only oil lands, but the production of the fields, does not meet with the ap proval of oil men, ns was to be expected. AV. S. Guffey stated the position of the pro ducers yesterday when he said: "To lay a tax on the - oil would drive one ol the largest industries out of the State. The business is too hazardous and uncertain. It is all right to tax coal $."0 an acre, for the owner lenows that it is there. He sees it cropping out of the hill sides, and figures out to a nicety what he can expect. An oil man gets a stake to-day and loses it to-morrotv. I know lots.of men notv making money in the McDonald field who dropped ns high as j.OOO drilling dry holes in other places. The new field comes as a Godsend to them and gives them a chance to retrieve their iortunes. Take the his tory of oU men. How many of thein have made miUions and spent every dollar of it in exploring new territory to continue their business. People never" stop to take into arcount this feature of the business. "Oil men pay plenty of taxes. Tlie farm er puts up the tax on the land, the oil pro ducer is taxed for all the machinery used in drilling a well. "We pay tribute" to the sountv on our engines, casing, etc To begin with, the manufactur er ol these articles has paid a business tax on them to the county. In addition we have to stand ior excessive tar iff duties on nearly everything we buy. It costs from 4,000 to 5,000 to put down a well, and the oil man must get back this money or go under. I say frankly that a tax on the oil would kill the business. The Standard, of course, pars a tax 011 the pipe lines, tanks, etc. I think the oil inau is taxed to the limit." e !)Uc: globe. l314'c: elalne. 15c: carnadlne. lie; royallue, 14c; red oil, 10,Mllc; purity.
