HOGS DROOPING AND SHEEP HIGHER
Office or PiTTSnuito Dispatch,
JIomhv, Oct. 12.
At the East Liberty stock yards there
u ere 120 car lond of cattle on sale at the
opening; of the untkets agaiufct 97 loads last
Monday nnd 8? loads the previous Monday.
Grneral quality of to-day's ofl'crings was a
fair r.vcrncic, and rather above that of last
veek. There were 40 loads Irom Chicago,
and the other 80 loads M ere in the main
lrora Ohio and Indiani with a few irom
Pennsylvania and "West Virginia. Uuycrs
were present in the usual number, and,
not'ttith'-tandin!: the increased run, markets
varied little from last Monday. While there
were no cattle last week above 53 O0 per c t.
on car load lots, this price, wns refused
for four loads of Indiana beeves which were
held at S3 23. Good stockers Jnd feeders
were bteady at last week's piices as were
light, smooth butcher beeves. Fresh, cows
"were in moderate supply, and those of pood
jirade were in demand at last week's prices,
the rauce being 530 io S45 per head. There
wcie 150 head of cah e on sale and the top
price was iC!4c per pound, only a few
eMra tine reaching these licures.
Sheep In Light suptilj.
There were all told hut 13 double deck
loads of sheep and lambs on f.ale at the
opening of markets against 15 loads last
Monday.
Tor all good stock, markets were
active and strong at better prices thaa
ruled a week ago. Top price of sheep was
S'i'c and lambs 6c per lb, being a Jc ad
vance oer lust Monday for sheep and Wc
for laml s. The facts are that choice grades
have not been in sufficient supply to meet
demand for some weeks past, while common
:ind low grade stock has been overabundant.
Hogs lieceipts were the largest of the
season, the total being 53 carloads
against 30 cars lust Monday. The pro
portion of good corn-fed stock shows
asteidy gain week by week, and with the
improvement in quality comes a steady de
cline in prices. The top of the market for
hogs to-day was 55 15 to S3 25, which was a
23c per cwt. below last Monday's prices. At
the decline markets did not snow any great
activity. The time is here w hen receipts of
hoss will be oil the increased At Chicago
to-day receipts were 28,000 head, and top
price there w as 54 SK). The great corn crop
begins to show its influence in the declining
prices of hogs and hog products.
Vllegheny Yards.
At the Herr's Island yards the run of
cattle was below late average in number,
but w ere sufficient for all demands. Heavy
beei es w ere no more than steady at last
w eck's prices, and light weights were 23c
per c t below last Monday's range. The
range of prices was SG 256 40 tor best

BEARISH CROP REPORTS.
Bulletins Issued by the Government Send
"Wheat and Corn Down at the Opening,
but Both Corrals Recover Oats Quiet
and Steady Provisions Depressed.
CHICAGO "Wheat opened weak and lower
to-day. The prime cause was the Govern
ment crop report of Saturday, which was
promulgated after the closo of the Board.
It indicated the very large total of about
t00,000,003 bushels as the season's yield, w hich
would glvea surplus of about230.000,009bush
els for export, according to local experts,
and a heavy decline was looked for.
Liverpool reported a decline of Jd in spot
and Id in futures, but London was 9d Higher
on California wheat to arrive and A'cw York
started lower. The first sales heie showed a
decline of lc Irom Saturday's cloc, bnt
almo-t immediately began to develop
strength and eventually advanced lc, Dnt
lost pnrt of the improvement. Tho early
advance was the result of goodhujing ord
ers from New York and some bullish re
ports. On" of these was the published statement
that Germany and tlio United States had
signed a convention, by the teims of which
all American cereale would be admitted into
Oennany, duty freo. lu return for the freo
admission into tho United States of German
beet sugar, free of duty, aftet January 1
next In spito of dispatches somewhat con
firmatory of this report, it was not generally
bcliev ed here; but it nevertheless caused
some cov ermg by timid shorts and helped
the advaneo. The news which had a more
decidedly bullish effect on tho market in
the early trading was the "Weather Bureau
report indicating mln with piobable snow
on the uiithrcslied wheat shocks in the
.Northwest, with continued clear, dry
weather in the Southwest, which, it was ar
gued, would further delay winter wheat
seeding.
December opened at OSgOSJc, against
99K on Saturday at tho close; sold up to
l)$;!.,c, off to 9sVc, up to 90e, receded to 98,c,
rallied near the close to tbjgc, and closed
steady at fSc.
Corn was nervously strong. The market
opened KKC lower on the Government
rcpo.t placing the conditional 92 5against
0L1 last month, and indicating a crnnof
2 000,003,030 bushels, but soon sold tip l2c
on liberal put chases by the local shipping
oontigentand shorts who came in on the ad
vance Realizing carried the market back
Jlo after which it ruled firm. October
opened nt 52c against 53c at the close on
Saturdnvr sold" uv irreirularly to 53c: re
acted to 54c; aionnd w liich figure it held for
a long time; then near tho closo advanced
to 5454c nnd clo-ed at 5IJ4C
Oats were quiet and sceady, closing K
higher.
I'ork was active but lower eaily, though
recovering mo-tofthe decline later in the
day. The liquidation wai again vorj gen
eral and the demand was slaik and bids
much reduced. The big stock of pork here
was the deptes-ing factor, and the weakness
in this dragged down tho long futures.
The close shows a loss of7U15c. Lard is
7J212Jic lower and ribs 7Ijj.
The leading futures ranged as follows, as cor
rected bi John 31. Oakle & Co., Sixth street,
member of the Chicago Board of Trade:

A BIG EAST END DEAL.
The Wilkin s Property, on Penn Ave

A YERY FINE MANSION TO FOLLOW.
Ensincss Conditions Present a Healthy and

FEATURES OF 310.XEY AND SFECDLATIOX
The final step in an important transac
tion in East End residence property was
taken vesterday. Sir. Edward "Wilkins
sold to John B. Jackson, President of the
Fidelity Title and Trust Company, about
four acres with an old-fashicned mansion on
Penn avenue, between Dallas and Linden
avenues, for 40,000.
This is not the original Wilkins home
stead, but it has been owned and occupied
by different membera of the family for
many years, and is a landmark in that quar
ter of the city. It fronts 1G0 feet on Penn
avenue and extends back about 050 feet to
Juniatta street. The price, when estimated
on the Penn avenue frontage, 230 a foot,

quite resonable.
It is 3Ir. Jackson's intention to demolish
the existing building either this fall or
early next spring, and begin the erection of
an elegant stone mansion, to b finished and
ready for occupancy by April 1, 1893.
Before entering upon this deal Mr. Jack
son had the adjoining property on the east
under consideration at 125,000, but a hitch
occurred. He then opened negotiations
with Jlr. Wilkins with the result stated.
The Business Situation.
The week's business opened under auspi
cious circumstances. "Weather was perfect,
making everybody feel like being up and
doing. There was no news to depress, but
much to confirm and strengthen confidence
in the soundness of the conditions and ele
vate faith in the outlook. It should be
borne in mind that none of the difficulties
which have occurred in Pittsburg during
the past five months are traceable to exist
ing conditions. All of them, without excep
tion, are legacies from previous years.
Perhaps the most important feature of the
monetaiy situation is the continuance of
gold imports. From September 12, when
the movement began, up to date receipts of
specie from Eunpc have amounted to about
?13,000,000, while a large amount is in
transit, and will arrive this week. The cur
rent estimates that within a short time ship
ments of at least 10,000,000, or 550,000,000,
irom London and the continent will be made
are nui ueguuveu uy uuymii,g euuer lit me
current export movement or the condition
of the foreign money markets. In fact, it is
to such expectations that is due the remark
able confidence which is the distinguishing
feature ot the money market.
General trade remains quiet, but ex
hibited a decidedly broadening tendency.
It cannot be expected, remarks the Finan
cial Chronicle, that after the many adverse
influences and events which marked the
course of affairs between the summer of
lb90 and the summer of 1891 a sudden and
radical recovery should ensue, even though
the outlook for the future appears very
promising. Yet there are distinct signs of
improvement, and so far as can be judged
from the leading conditions which must
control the course of business during the
next 12 months, such as crops, exports,
railroad earnings, etc, the indications
point as strongly td a revival of activity as
they did 3 year ago in the opposite direc
tion. Kailroad earnings continue to show large
gains. Important features in these
reports are the small number and extent of
the decreases shown as compared with Sep
tember a year ago, aud the large number
and heavy volume of increases reported
over the corresponding month a j ear ago.
In all only 30 roads ot those reported show
decreaseaof any kind, and, with four ex
ceptions, these decreases are slight. Kail
road equipment manufacturers and car
w orks are taking an extremely complacent
view of the situation.

A SUCCESSFUL BEAR RAID.
CHICAGO GAS THE ONXY STOCK
ESCAPE THE PKESSUKE.
TO
Atchison and St. Paul the Only Active
Share's A Steady Decline In Prices
From the Opening to the Close Kail
road Bonds Dull.
New Yoke, Oct. 12. Tho stock market to
day was again only moderately active, while
weak in tone, and w hile no sudden down
ward movement took place during the day
the steady pressure to sell caused material
losses befoie the close of business. The
piessure brought to bear was caused by an
other bear raid under the leadership of Mr.
Cammack, whose brokers attacked the en
tire list, making a general and unilorm
movement over the whole market. No sup
port was accorded prices anywhere, and
only the natural sticngth of the market pre
vented a sudden break in some part of tho
list.
Theie were only two really active stocks
today Atchison and St. Paul bnt tho
former luinishec! about one-foiutu of the
entire business done.
The opening of the market wns in sympa
thy witn a lower London market, and sell
ing by tho foieignersas well as the beats
had tho effect of opening the maiket at de
clines from Saturday's figures of from to
1 per cent, Sugar, New England and Hock
ing Valley showing the laigest losses. There
w as ne lelief from the steady pressure, how
ever, at any time during the daj , and the
opening figmes in most cases weie the best
01 the day. Chicago Gas was tho only ex
ception to the rule, and it was very strong
in the early dealings, in the face of tho
weakness in tho lestof the list, lislngi;
per cent and holding the advance to the
close, though it was only fractionally
higher owing to the decline at the opening.
When well into tue afternoon the leading
shaies, mcludinsr Atchison, Missouri Pacific,
Rock Island, C, C, C. & St. L., Wheeling and
Lake Erie, Cordage, Sugar and some special
ties, weio all dow n over 1 per cent from the
opening figmes, and tho downward move
ment made little or no further progress for
the rest ot the day, covering keeping prices
within narrow limits, wlulo making no le
covery. The maiket finally closed dull and
steady at Or near the lowest pi ices reached.
The list to-night is all lowerand the material
losses include Sugar, 1; Buffalo, Rochester
and Pittsburg, Lake failure, 1 Atchi
son, C., C, C.J& St. L. aud Northwestern,
each IK; Rock Island, St. Paul, Missouri
Pacific and Wheeling and Lake Eiie, each
VA, and Wabash preferred, 1 per cent.
Rallioad bonds ero quiet to dull and the
dealings extended to an unusually small
number of issues. Atchison incomes were
the only one show ing any animation. Total
sales, ?800,500. Tho market lemained in close
sympathy with stocks, but failed to make
the marked movement that shaicsdid, and
whilo prices this evening aie generally
low er the final changes are in but low cases
of Impoitauee.

MOXDAY. Oct. 12. J
Country Produce Jobbing Prices:
The great scarcity of choice creamery but
ter noted for a number of days pat still
continues, and an advance of Elgin is sure
to come before the week is gone. Leading
jobbers report that it is impossible to meet
demand for good creamery butter. Strictly
fresh eggs are in short supply and readily
bring outside quotations. The week opens
with heavy receipts of grapes, the total be
ing about ten carloads. Markets are quiet,
with prices a shade lower. Peaches still
linger, but demand is slow. In vegetable
lines we note an improving market, a con
dition explained by the advent of frosty
weather. Potatoes are no longer in short
supply, as they have been for a week or two
past. Sweet potatoes aro quiet.
Tiopical fruits are on the gain, with
lemons the exception to tho rule.
