The Sales of Pair Iron for September Break Previous Records. HOW THE MAEKETS CLOSED ELSETCIIEEE Office of riTTsnuuo D watch, J FlilUAV. Oct. 9. Haw Ir.ON and Steel Business during the week has not been very 3tisfactorr, at leat to the seller. To effect sales the Blinding of prices was again resorted to, not withstanding the "fact that pig iron here is celling lower than in any other market. This is not generally the situation. There is a good deal of business doing of Tarious kinds, but prices are irregular, feverish and very uncertain. Confidence is far from being restored. In regard to improved prices no person is willing to venture an opinion. One thing i certain: Trade can not continue in the present condition much longer. Jlost of the city furnaces are well fold up, and are not anxious to make fur ther contracts at prevailing figures. Tlio Situation in the East is thus described by a leading iron man. "A large business has been done during the past t o weeks, and trade is still abundant at prices recently ruling. Sellers are try ing to secuie better prices, and in some in stances have succeeded in doing so for de liveries during the first quarter of the com ing year: but for ISiU ir is hard to secure anv" clearly defined advance. Practically sellers are getting more money, as conces sions that were almos. unavoidable a little while back are now completely done away with. The supplv of iron iR very large, and while the demand is equally so, if gen eral appearances are any criterion, better prices are not verv far distant Several brands, both local "and Southern, are held for an advance on previous prices, which shows that order books are pretty well filled up. It is seldom that sellers begin to talk higher prices until they have about all the business they can handle." A Difference of Opinion. Ileports from the Shenango and Mahon ing valleys are rather conflicting, as fur nace men don't hold tha same opinion in regard to values. At the same time sales of pig in the valleys are fully abreast with thoe tbi. govern the Pittsburg market. Freight- to Pittsburg arc 70 cents per ton; at the same time there is a good deal of iron from those districts that find. a market here. .Sew steel rails are steady at enrrent rates; a. rumor was abroad that a sale of 50,000 tons had been made to a foreign country, but th; figures could not be learned. Scrap mate rial continues Ann and inquired for, es pecially Xo. 1 It. It. Other descriptions com mand lair prices. Old iron and steel rails held llrinlv at current rates; tlie rornier is very scarce and will soon be numbered with things of the past as steel has taken the place of iron in the manufacture of rails, bteel billets Sales for some time past have been unusuallv large: prices weaker, but chow no quotable change. Mnckbar Sales, earl delivery, at previous rnces. The Latest The roartet is weaker for certain descriptions. Bessemer sold at very low flgqres. Gray fonre shows no declino compared with last week. Steel slabs and billets less active and prices maintained. Muck bar shows no change in alues. Old milt lion and steel scarce and held firmly at quotations. Scrap material There was a pood demand for certain descriptions. Skelp iron A steady demand continues nt lull prices. Ferro'manjrance Domestic is held at an advance. Ciuci-s-nati, Oct. 9. Special. Kogers, Krown & Co. say: No important change., have occurred in the market during the past week. Demand has been normal, and Jt has been met without any change in figures. Certain Southern furnaces are re ported to have booked very large contracts for next year's deliveries at a slight ad vance on current figures. Generally the trade has been willing to make such sales. Tho conservative viow is that prices can un der no circumstances go lower than they, now are, while all general indications point to an improved demand next year, which must lne5-itably mean Improved prices. Productive capacity Is now fully employed both North and South, and anv considerable increase In consumption would quickly Stake a scarcity of iron. At the closa of tho cek a number of quite large consumers are endeavoring to cover for next vear's requirements on current basis of price. Sellers who were making such contracts two weeks ago are under stood to have filled their furnaces pretty full and there is a disposition on the part of others to keep out of such engagements unless at figures that would show a lair profit to the furnaces. Carwheel irons nre still lather s4ow sale, although some size able transactions are reported. The rail roads are not entering tho market for cars as fast as it was expected they would when the new crop besan to move. There is an improvement in the carload trade as tho fall! bnsinessiTip.ri"i.sesnmomr the smaller foun dries. ACTIVITY AT CHICAGO, A Number of Good Deals Closed There Dnrlng the Tast 'Week, Cnic.vGO, Oct. 9. Special. Rogers, Brown & Mcrwin say: Activity in the Chicago pis metal market still continues. During the past week a number of additional round deals have been closed, these being divided mainly between Northern and Southern coke irons. On the latter, deliveries in a number of cases have been well scattered and close figures made. While there has boon no change in tho outlook, or the gen eral range of prices asked, many of the larger Southern companies concede thnt the market is likely to remain on about the present basis during the rest of the year. Sonic companies still look for un advance of .50 to $1 per ton this year, with further stiffening after January, but the num ber of these is small. On tho other hand prices which have been in force for the past 30 days are well maintained. Some additional transactions have occurred in Lake Superior and South ern charcoals. Tho former $17 60 cash, Chi cago, has bcon shaded. It is claimed, how ever, by furnaces which have sold below this, that they are now holding firmly at the price named. Othor brands which enjoy a more extended reputation arc well sold ahead andare holding at $13 SO, Chicago, as a minimum. An encouraging feature is the fact that several round orders for cars have been placed by leading railway lines, and other denls are now pending. It is conceded on all hands that the railroad companies must be heavy buyers of rolling stock. Such lines as piaco contracts during the present autn-rn will unquestionably save money over prices which will prevail during the first half of the next year. A LULL IN BUSINESS. The Briskness In tho Birmingham Market Falls to Keep Vp. Birmikobam, Ala Oct. 9. SpeciaL. The briskness in the iron market last week, which sent nominal quotations up, has not continued to increase, though the points gained are maintained Tho market has been quiet for the week and inquiries arc onlv fairly steady. The hopeful feeling con tinues, and the confidence of producers in a steady advance by gradual approaches is unabated. The quotations f. o. b. at the fur nace remain nt: No. 1 foundry, $12 50; No. 2 foundry. $H CO.- No. 3 foundry, $10 75; gray forge, $10. Concessions below these figures are determined by the size of the order, and are made whenever necessary to effect sales. A BLIGHT FALLING OFF. Business Not Up to the Average of the Fast Tew Weeks at Philadelphia. Philadelphia, Oct. 9 Special. Kogers, Browu & Co. say: There ha9 been a fair amount cf business done in iron this week, but the average has not been quiti up to the two or three preceding weeks. Largo lots of steel slabs and billets have been sold at concessions of 25 to 50 cents per ton. There is still some complaint among con sumers of iron in regard to slowness of col lections., and failures here and there throughout tho State seem to cause a tem porary feeliug of uneasiness. SOUND CONDITIONS HELP TEADE Prospect of a Presbyterian Home for Old Ladies at Wilkinslrarf . OFFICE AND STREET NEWS AND GOSSIP Highland Park comes to the front again 'with an important transaction in real estate. Prof. "W. C. Lync yesterday afternoon pur chased from P. H. Iiaufman five acres and a fraction adjoining the park, and lying be tween Heberton avenue and Farragnt street, for ?22,000. This deal is one of a series in the same locality, and involves some extensive im- provements which cannot be mentioned in -detail until all the preliminaries are settled. Presbyterians Make an Offer. It was mentioned a few days ago that Mr. Peter Dick had made an offer for the Hub ley property in "Wilkinsburg. His figure was considered too small, and was rejected. It was learned yesterday on good authority that an association connected with the Pres byterian Church has made a bid which will likely be accepted. Should this deal materialize the building will be converted into a Presbyterian Homo for Old Ladies, for which purpose it is ad imirably adapted. Investors More Confident. A tour of the real estate offices of the city or almost any of them, will convince the most skeptical that the market is more active than at any previous time this year. There is still some difficulty in getting sel lers and buyers to agree upon values, but that they are beginning to look through the same glasses is shown by the amount of business done week after week and day after day. The inquiry is not confined to any particular class of property or district, but embraces all. . Investors are no longer apprehensive oi a stringent money market, but feel confi dent ot a period of great local and general prosperity. This is turning their thoughts to real estate, and giving it a bulge which is seen, heard and felt in all directions. On a Sound Basis. The tide has turned. A few months ago there were apprehensions that the gold that was being sent to Europe from this country would cause a financial panic and tie up enterprise of all kinds. These fears have proved groundless. The yellow metal is coming back by every steamer. It is shipped almost every day from London, Paris and Berlin. The receipts of gold during this month promise to be the largest ever known. That this will be a powerful factor in stimu lating business in all lines cannot be doubted. The only dangers to guard against are over speculation and the artificial manipu lation of the money market by speculators, and those evils will very likelv cure them selves by distrust and discredit of their arthors. The B. & O. Dividend. According to the financial ChronSdt the Baltimore and Oh stock dividend, which is promised the shareholders at the next annual meeting, will, it is said, take the form of a distribution of accumulated pro fits, rather than a dividend out of the year's surplus. Since the payment of dividends was suspended a very large amount of money that realbr belonged to the stock holders has been invested in the property, and the dividend will distribute alarge part, if not all of this sum. It is intimated the dividend will be not less than 20 per cent, and it mav reach 30 per cent. This means the addition of 3,000,000 and $4,000,000 to the share cap ital. Business News and Gossip. The Smithfield street puzzle has been solved, but the Cherry alley mystery re mains. The latest reported sale on Boquet street was at the rat:: of $65 a front foot. Agents say there is very little Smith field street property on the market A good-sized deal is pending on Third avenue. It involves the erection of a six story business house. Exchange memberships come higher. Ten were wanted yesterday at 5400 each, but could not be had!. For Citizens' Traction 5s yesterday 105 was bid, offered at 107. Birmingham Trac tion was offered at 17. For Duquesne 11 was bid. Total gold known to be on the wav to New York from Europe is 5,127,000. Over 512, 000,000 have been received. H. T. The stock market yesterday was dull and grnenlly uninteresting. The report of fresh trouble in the Iron trade bad no effect upon values. It was thought it would soon bo bridged over. There were some, orders for Philadelphia Gas, and it advanced a fraction. Luster also improved a trifle. Switch and Signal con tinued its upward career. Electric was quiet and rather weak, notwithstanding the state ment that the company is doing a paylug business. Central Traction made a slight concession, but the rest of the street rail ways held their ground. Tho rest of the list was tame. Tho only sale at the first call was that of a small batch of Electric Scrip, at 63. Sales at tho second call were 05 shares of Switch and Signal at 10 and 30 Luster at 11. New York, dot. 9. The stock market to day was practically a repetition of the last two days, and in the main a steady contest between the bear and bull factions among tho local and professional trading element, and after mild fluctuations in both direc tions the advantage rests with the latter party. The operations of the last few days have undoubtedly added largely to the out standing short interest in tne market. The opening was heavy nnd lower. Atchi son bore the brunt of the early pressure, hut the entire list moved ud slow! v. with here and there more mnrked advances. Toward 2 p. 3f. the highest figures or the day were at tained, when a rumor of a new issue of stock on tho Hocking Valley caused a drop of nearly ift per cent in tnat stocK, to wmen the rest of the list responded and fractional concessions followed all along the line. Hocking Valley, however, recovered all of the loss and the general list steadied, then closed dull but steady. The dealincs in railroad bonds were bar ren of special features, but the tone re mained firm without change of note among the leading active shares. The total sales wore only $894,000. It Holds Firmly an Advance to Over SI.OO Corn Strong and Higher, but Hoi Froducts Weak and Lower Oats Neg lected and Steady. CHICAGO Wheat started out a littlo "wobbly" this morning, selling on both sides of last night's closins figures round the openinp, then becamo strong, advancing about ljic, and holding nearly all of it t;o tho close. December opened at 98J.c, sold to92Jc, broke to 99Kc, then advanced witn imma terial reactions to $I.O0Jf. In the afternoon It eased off some on realizing sales, eolng to $L00; tut on stronirer English cables the prico reacted to ?LO0X and closed steady at iJI.OOi. Corn was stronger and higher largely in sympathy with wheat, but partly on ac count of the small receipts. Trade wns slow, however. October opened at 5JJc, touched 52, sold to 52c without material recession, but weakened near the end of tho session nnd closed at 53c, against 52c at tho close yesterday. Oats neglected and steady. Hog products were weak and lower on freo selling by packers and liquidation by De cember longs. The close shows a los of 5 15c in the nrice of pork, 2jc in lard, and 2c in ribs, except October, which is un changed. The leading fntnres ranged as follows, as cor rected by John M.
