AN EXCESS OF BEEVES.

Orricr or PrrrsiirKG DtsrATcn,
Wednesday. Oct. 7, 1S91.
At the East Liberty yards (here have
been close to 100 carloads of cattle on sale
this week, and markets were very unsatis
factory to shippers and commission men
probably as much so as any time for a year
past. As an evidence of the depressed con
dition of markets not less than '20 carloads
were chipped on to New York in first hands
on Monday. Advices from New York show
that the cattle forwarded fared no better
than they wonld have done had they been
sold at East Liberty.
Heavv, course, half fatted beeves could
only be hold here this week at a sacrifice.
Light smooth butcher beeves weighing 1,100
to 1,300 lbs, were not in supply equal to
demand and were sold a i-hadc better
price than was realized last week. The top
price this week was ?5 00 per cwt, arid
very few of those on sale reached this price.
CJood fresh cons found ready sale with
543 00 per head as top price. "The supply
of hogs lor the week was above late
(average tin both number and
quality. The good corn crop begins to tell
in the larger number of corn fed hocrs com
ing to our markets, Price of best Philadel
phia's range from Jvi 40 to So 50. Sheep
The number on sale for the week was about
SO carloads, acainst 3Z loads last week. Good
sheep were strong and active at last week's
prices, and common crades dull and slow.
Top of market was 5c for sheep and 5c for
lambs.
A Liberty Stock Firm's Bevlew.
Following is a review of week's trade
and prices by Holmes. Rcwen, Briggs & Co.
"We report 05 loads of cattle for sale on
Monday. The attendance of buyers was
more liberal than for two weeks past, yet
the trading was very slow at about lust
week's prices, except on smooth fat butch
ering grades and good class of feeders, which
wen in most demand and fewest in number.
This crade sold 10c to 15-per hundred higher
thnn lor the past two weeks. There was a
liberal supply of medium weights weighing
1,250 to 1,300 lbs., which were not in de
mand from countrv butchers, unless at rates
to compete with Chicago dressed beef. This
decline owners were not prepared to meet,
and about ten loads were lorwarded out to
Xew York. There were no prime heavy
beeves offered, and no particular demand for
such: except tuoorthrccloads ordered bv an
exporter. We quote good, 1,300 to 1,400,
at 4,4.-e; good, 1,100 to 1.200 at 44c;
good, 1,000, at 53 40(5.3 t5; good feede-s,

LUCKY DEALS IN REAL ESTATE.
Some Strong Features in Local Stocks,
"While Petroleum Moves Up a Teg.
OFFICE AND STREET NEWS AND GOSSIP
It was learned yesterday from Mr. "Wal
lace, of McKeesport, one of the principal
men in the enterprise, that the new piano
and organ factory nt Mendelssohn, a short
distance above McKcesport, will begin
operations a week from next Monday. It
is completely equipped for turning out
first-class work, and will afford employment
for about 500 hands. The Heinle hoop
mill, at the same place, will be ready for
business at the same time.
In regard to land values at Mendelssohn
and vicinity, Mr. Wallace said: "Buyers
have poor picking there now. There is
nothing for sale at less than $3,000 to $5,000
an acre. Land that was held at $500 an
acre before the town was laid out is now
scarce at $3,000."
A Short Road to Wealth.
The question is often asked by persons
who have paid little or no attention to the
subject: Is real estate profitable as an in
vestment? Here is an instance proving the
affirmative of the question. Names and
dates can be given if required: A piece of
unimproved property nt Ingram, consisting
of a number of acres, was sold less than a
year ago for $2,500. The purchaser shortly
afterward traded it for improved property
worth $7,300. This owner subsequently
disposed of it for 524,500.
As an explanation of this tremendous
jump in so short a time, which is without a
parallel in this vicinitv, it should be stated
that it was due to the promise and expecta
tion of the speedy introduction of rapid
transit facilities, giving easy access to and
from the city, and rendering the property
valuable for subdivision.
Prosperity of the Railroads.
The bright expectations based on the phe
nomenally large crops are being realized,
and the era of prosperity for the railroads
of the country so confidently predicted has
set in. Great and steadily increasing gains
are noted in the earnings ot the roads, and
the outlook in for a still more gratifying
showing. The mot pleasing aspect of this
phase of the business revival is that the
activity in railroad circles is not confined
to one section of the country. North,
South, East and West all roads are doing
a most lucrative business.
The prosperity of the railroads will soon
react upon other lines of trade. It means
grist for the Pittsburg iron manufacturers.
IVenk Concerns 'Weeded Out.
The increase in the number of failures
this year over 1890, amounting to 17 per
cent, is not due to unfavorable commercial
or industrial conditions. The causes, in
brief, are in part the normal growth of the
commercial death rate due to a larger busi
ness population, but for the greater part to
the prolonged period of restricted trading,
enforced economy and resulting weeding
out, following the congested money market
of November and December, 1890. "
The weeding out process has apparently
culminated, and it is fair to expect that the
lost quarter of the year will show a better
record in this respect than either of the
proceeding three quarters.

Lets Go on Heavy Selling Consolida
tion Talk Braces Up Duqnesno Traction.
Trading on call yesterday was of a whole
sale character, which was a refreshing
change from the small lot business. In
vestors seem to think that the market is in
a position to justifytheinin assuming larger
responsibilities.
The sale of a block of upward of 200
shares of Monongahela Water Company
stock, the first on the open board for a long
time started the Innovation. This was follow
ed by two 100 share lots of Philadelphia Gas,
and afterward by a C00 sharo lot ol tho same
stock. The other active interests were
Birmingham Traction and Electric.
The strongest features were Switch and
Signal, Luster and Pittsburg Traction,
Electric, Philadelphia Gas and Central Trac
tion closed off a fraction each. Duquesno
Traction was bid np to 11 at the early call,
with none offered. A broker said that noth
ing less than 12 would buy it,
It's an ill wind that blows nobody good.
Talk of consolidation, however visionary, is
a good advertising for tho Duquesne, and
traders are working off a good deal or the
stocic on the piomlnence which It has
nehteved by this means.
The weakness of Philadelphia Gas was
natural under the heavy selling pressure.
There was nothing in the affairs of the com
pany to weaken confidence. It Is supposed
the realizing was by a gentleman who
bought 500 or COO shares about a month ago
around 10107.
An insider in Luster said a favorable tip
from tho mine had been received. He would
say nothing more. Earnings or $12,000 will
pay 6 per cent on the capital stock. It looks
like good property. Sales:

Country Produce Jobbing prices
Choice grades of creamery butter are scarce
and firm at the advance. Jobbers report
that it is impossible to secure sufficient sup
plies from Elgin. Shippers there are with
holding stock, as is the style on advancing
markets. A ievr weeks ago shipments were
often beyond amount ordered. Kow the
reverse is true. New York cheese is firm
and active at a shade higher prices. Eggs
that are entirely unsuspicious are very firm
and our quotations are advanced. Tho
steady downpour of to-day had a quieting
effect on produce commission trade. Fruits
and vegetables were dull and 6low all along
the line. Grapes have been arriving this
week at the rato ot about a dozen carloads
dally.
