THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH. THURSDAY. SEPTEMBER' 2 189lT OUTWIIMG A SYNOD. An Echo of the Suspension of the Seven Eefonned Ministers. SUIT OF EASTERN SYMPATHIZERS To Save Their Church Property and Declare for Independence. EEF0E3I VIEWS ARE TAKING DEEP ROOT ffPECIAL TrLTGIIAM TO TIIK DISPATCH.! New York, Sept. 23. The congregation of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, or as it is better known, the Church of the Covenanters, in Tompkins avenue, Brook lyn, is interested in a suit just begun to foreclose a mortgage for 8,500 on the prop erty, which is held by the trustees of the estate of the late Hugh Henry Scott. The congregation is. not financially embarrassed, and the trustees have purposely refused to pay the interest on the mortgage, uith the approbation of the Itev. John P. Carson, the pastor. The foreclosure proceedings are the out growth of the rumpus, which occurred at the famous Covenanters' conference in Pitts burg a month or two ago. According to the canons of the church, not only the pastors, but the members of the congrega tions, are prohibited from exercising the right of suftrage, on the ground that there is no recognition of Divine power in the con stitution and laws of the country. At the 1'itt-burg meeting tne" reform ele ment in the church made itself felt: and a fiiciestion. backed by several minister":, was made that the canon law in the matter of prohibiting tlie cxcicise ot the fiiuiciiNc ihoutd bo amended. The trustees of the 5y nod not only expected thc.e suggestions, but suspended "seven young; ministers who bad been very emphatic nrj;inr their reform views. The seven young men m-idc an un successful appeal from the decision. The Jtev. Mr. Carson, of tho Brookljn church, took advanced grouud m favor of tho sus pended ministers and on his return to his pulpit made an address in support of their reform view s, and nearly nine-tenths of the congregation upheld him. It i thought that the governing body in the denomination may make an attempt to depose Mr. Carson Irbm the ministry, and the foreclosure proceedings are brought so that the propel t may be bought in by the congregation itself and held independent of the ynod. When this is done ilr. Carson can declare his liberal views without anv tear of removal by the Synod. -Mr. Carson said: "-I don't think the congre gation has any intention to let the church jias out ofits"hands. The present state of affairs lias grown out of the attitude taken by the Synod in regard to the suggestions of a change in the common law at the East End meeting in Pittsburg. A large propor tion of our congregation has adopted these suggestions, and should the chuich remain in our possession. asie have reason to be lieve it will, there will doubtless be some changes in the reorganization.'" It is thought that the church will either become entirely independent or join the regular Presbyterian body. The Tompkins Avenue Church is the only organized society of Covenanters in Brooklyn. The congrega tion wan formed In 147. 3TD0XALD IS SPOTTED. IT IS CONCLUSIVELY PHOYEN BY A WELL JUST COMPLETED. The Royal Gas Company Gets a Big "Well on the Sauters Property to the East Wells on Top or the Sand Big Wlld wooa 'Well. There is no better proof that the McDon ald field is as spotted as a leopard's skin than is given by the Royal Gas Company's well, on the Sauters property, which was Orillei into the fifth sand yesterday. It is several hundred feet northeast of Shaffer & Co.N well, on the Eanny Johnson lot. Yesterday afternoon it was reported to be making from 0 to 75 bai-j-cls an hour, and as it is located consider ably east of the 45 line through tho John son lot It opens up a pool which has been ontirelv unsuspected heretolore. Besides it makes W. I. Kena's well at the Lnurcl Hill coal mines look a great deal better than it did a couple ot davs ago. It may turn out that the pool under the Miller and the Mcvey farm- diveiges sud denly to the east and "runs just north of the Johnson and the Dcltoy wells.
