AVkhxesiiay, Sept. S3, i
The immense run of common and low
prndc rattle anJt)ie scarcity of prime stock
mere the most ranrked features of the list
Liberty live stock market this week. There
have been on sale all the week over 170 car
loads of cattle, against 115 loads last week.
Prom all live stock centers comes the same
report, namely, that common cattle arc
abundant and good grades scarce. In three
days of last week 00,000 head were re
ceived at Chicago and a large number of
the e were of necessity dumped onto
tills and other markets. The scarcity an J
nigh pitce of srrain last season Is nmvsliow
Injr the cllect in the scarcity of prime
beeves. Though buyers were present In
force at East Liberty this week, there was
nothing on hand that Mild above n nickel a
pound In the cattle line When it in i mucin
bored that prime beeves sell in Chicntroat
?(i 2S to JS .7) per cwt., it is evident tluit there
n 'i-e no primes ollered at East Liberty. The
supply oi pood feeders was short ot demand.
l!uefsof this quality are forced of late to
E to Clnrago for their supplies.
Si'pply of good, fresh cows is scarcely up
to demand and last week's range was main
tained. Sheep and lambs There were on
sale all the week so far close to 10 carloads
iijainst 33 loads last week. Those of good
quality, Inch were few In proportion to the
total, louncl ready sale at about Inst week's
prices, while common and inferior grades
acre dull and bard to sell at a reduction.
The top price of sheep i as 5 00 and lambs
$3 50. Hoss Tho warm weather has ap
parently been adverse to this line of live
stock, Receipts -nere not heavy, but there
appeared to be enough for all demands. The
top of the market to-day i $3 CO.

The following is a report of the situation:
Holmes, Jlowlen, Briggs A Co. We report
1G5 loads of cattle offered for sale on Monday
which erc made up generally from Chicago
find Indiana, of common low-priced heifers
and Nteers. Xo prime shippers or expoiters
ollered for sale, and very few smooth, tat
butchering cattle. The attendance of buy
ers was fully up to an average, but was verv
low to buy any grades at a quarter to hnff
dollar per bundled decline from opening
prices of Monday week. The better grades
of butchering cattle and stackers and feed
ers suffered the least loss and were easiest
told. It was not a question of price to sell
coarse, rough grades, out simply to And a
buyer ho could use them at an v price the v
would offer. c quote: t!ood. l'.SOO to I.1C0

CHICAGO There wcro no evidences in
nny of the trading pits this morning, or. In
fact, during most of the session, of the crash
of S. V. Whito A Co. yesterday. In.fact, dur
ing a good part of tho session both wheat
and corn were strong. After oponing at or
abovo yesterday's closing prices, there were
advances until tlie prices were about thoso
prevailing before the White failure. Then
came a period of dullness ami weakness.and
Snillly n slump in which marked declines
were recorded, knocking off all of the. pre
vious advances nnd more, and the closoin
all of the articles dealt in on the floor was at
or near tho bottom" nfices of the day. Pro
visions, unlike the cereals, wore weak
throughout the session.
December w heat, which closed at 09e yes
terday, opened at S999JfcC and, with some
minor reactions, sold up to $1 0O& sagged
off to Ofljic; Armed up some, but In the last
hour broko baal- to SSJc, a tall of 2 cents
from the top figures of tho day and closed at
the bottom. The slump was due to late
lower cables, the weakness in corn and to
the lact that the available supply on both
coasts had increased over 3,000,000 bushels
during the past week.
The trading in corn was somewhat spas
modic. It opened active, strong and higher.
The demand was largely for October and
soemed to conio principally from Ji'ew York,
opening at 49Jc against 49c the closing price
yesterday. Tneiewasan irregular advance
to. 50Vc " September was quiet but strong
and sold for the same as October to 'c
preinimn against Vic discount yesterday. In
the afternoon an attempt w as made to close
out some of White's September corn which
was not liquidated yesterday for fear of fur
ther demoralizing tho market. The crowd,
however, was on tho look out for this move,
and some of the early buyers attempting at
the same time to realize their profits, the
result was a decided break, October going
down to 4oc and September receding from
Jc premium to c discount, or 49c, both
closing at tne uoiioui.
Oats advanced some early with wheat and
corn, but weakened later and closed at bot
tom prices.
Provisions were weak throughout the ses
sion, especially during tho last hour, but
firmed np a little at tho close. Compared
with vestcrday's final figure", pork shows a
loss of 32Jc: Inrd, 10Simc, and ribs,
1017c.

Demolition of Federal Street Buildings to
Make Room for Modern Ideas.
SEVERAL KEW DWELLINGS UNDER WAT
Workmen were busy yesterday tearing
down the old building No. 180 Federal
street, Allegheny, which, with many others
on that thoroughfare, has survived its use
fulness. It will be replaced by a large and
handsome business structure. Nos. 188 and
100, adjoining, will also be demolished and
replaced with modern business houses.
These signs of progression on Federal street
are refreshing.
IteSectorville, on the Castle Shannon
Kailroad, is a progressive place. Between
12 nd 15 houses have been erected there
this season, and tho Methodists have Just
commenced a handsome church, which they
expect to finish and occupy this year.
It is too mnch to hope that Deacon
White's failure will bo the signal to 5vhistlo
"down btakes" on the speculative craze and
recall tho plungers to their sober senses.
Hut whether tho Deacon's trouble have this
effect or not, it cannot escape"nttention that
tho solid business ot the country is going
forward in utter disregard of Wnll street
flurries nnd Chicago booms. And there is
good reason for this. Business is in bettor
shape than since the early part of 1S9D. On
tho other sideof tho ocean thero are short
crops; on this side they are immense. On
the other side there is a panicky feeling
over money matters; on this side thero are
ease, confidence and quiet, with an abund
.ance of money to m ot all legitimate de
mands. This country is well off. It has
been gathering strength, confidence and
courage for nearly a year, and is now
thoroughly prepared for a forward move
ment. All the big and little industries nre
in good condition. All the railroads
are making money, nnd are buying
new equipments. Gold is coming back from
Europe, the amount In sight to dato being
nenrl v $7,000,000. Between $4'i,u(;u,ui nnu sjoj,
000,000 more will come. Backed by these
powerful influences business 5vill continue
to expand. It may bo embarrassed by spec
ulative exigencies, but being firmly rooted,
it cannot be seriously injnrod. Confidence
in a continuous commercial nnd Industrial
growth is too strong to be shaken by every
wind that blows from the speculative cen
ters. William Freeman, who is prominent in in
surance circles, has purchased a residence
property fronting the new M. E. Church, on
South sttcet, Wilkinshnrg, for $5,300, and
w ill occupy it in a short time. Tho lot is 60x
132. The house is a comparatively new two
story brick.

Deacon White's miscarriage, Instead of
boing a wet blanket, appears to have stiff
ened up the Ipcal stock market. It was more
bullish yesterday than for some time.
There was n liberal number of buying
orders, but scarcely anything that was
wanted, and the rango of inquiry was pretty
wide, was on tap. There were no sales at
cither of the threo calls. Stocks are evi
dently in strong hands.
Predictions made some tlmo ago that tho
Tractions would soon assume the leadership
of tho market aro in a good way to bo veri
fied. Pleasant Valley and Plttsbnrg each
scored a handsome gain, the latter advanc
ing to 40 bid.
There was considerable talk about Man
chester and Pleasant Valley consolidation,
and the belief was quiet prevalent that the
deal is near accomplishment. Tho combined
capital will be about $4,500,000, the Man
chester retaining the controlling Intero-t.
Stock and cash dividends, it was stated, will
be on this basis. Manchester stockholders
will get tho cash.

WALL STREET'S REVIEW;
ErrOBT TO MANIPULATE STOCKS A
COMPLETE FAILURE.
Two Seasons of Declines, but tho Net Re
sults or the Day's Transactions Are Frac
tional Gains Chicago Operators Are
Prominent in tho Market.
Nkw York, Sept. 23. The determined at-
tempt to manipulate tho money mnrket yes
terday and again this morning proved a
completo failure. The market this morning
was still weak under tho pressure to sell
from both bulls and bears at the opening,
and the first sales were mado at declines
from last evening's figures of from 14 to J
Jier cent. The market gathered strength
mmodiatelv under the early demand, but
later the efforts at depression became felt.
Prices slowly deolined in most shares, while
many scored material declines.
Thodownwnrdmovcmentlastednntll well
into the forenoon, when money began to be
offered more freely and rates eased up to 2
per cent at the close, while there wns no
lack of fimds to loan at any time of the day.
The Gould stocks were the weakest in the
list, nnd with n few specialties scored losses
extending to 2 per cent, while the rest of
the list generally brought only fractions
below tho levol of the opening figures.
The buying in the afternoon, and es
pecially in tho last hour, was very spirited,
Chicazo operators appearing again in the
market as purchasers of their favori 3s, nnd
Burlington, Wheeling and Lake Erio pre
ferred," Lucka5vanna and Northern Pacific
preferred showed the greatest strength. Tho
market closed active and strong at the high
est prices of the day. The final changes aro
generally small fractional gains, but Atchi
son rose Vi on a 5-ery large business, Bur
lington and Bending 1 per cent. Among
tho low priced shares Lake Erie and West
ern and sontnern i-acmc were special! v
prominent for strength, the latter rising.2
percent.
Railroad bonds showed more animation
than yesterday.but were affected llko stocks
by the manipulation of money rates, and
early trading was marked by heaviness in
the active issues, while no material decline
was seen in any case. Tho Reading thirds
was weakest, while the seconds rose materi
ally in the late dealings. Thero was little
special activity. Total sales, 2,008,000. No
material changes in quotations aro to bo
noted, but the market closed firm and confi
dent. Tho prices given arc the highest nnd
