Thousands of Veterans Attend and Enjoj
the Picnic
AX ABUXDAXCH OF MUSIC AXD DAXCIXG
Kock Point swarmed with blue coats and
brass buttons yesterday. Jlore than 10,000
people were there attending the outing and
reunion of G. A. R. comrades. They came
from all turts of the State. J
Early in the morning the Union depot
was crowded with them, and from that
station alone sis long trains were required
to carry the crowd. It was midday bclore
all were on the grounds. The exercises of
the day were largelv of an informal nature.
Io regular programme had been prepared,
but all understood that there would be no
lack of entertaining features.
Detachments of eteran8 irom the Sixty
first, Sixty-second, One Hundred and Sec
ond, One Hundred aud Fourth, One Hun
dred and Thirty-ninth, One Hundred and
Thirty-fourth and Sixty-third regiment.
The survivors of the Seventj -fifth Xew
York llegimcnt Mere aUo in attendance.
Pittsburg was of course more largely repre
sented than any other place, scores of old
soldiers coming from all part of the city.
a tit day ron Tiir. ncxic.
The day was a. beautiful one for such 3n
afiair, and the soldiers appreciated it.
Music was furnished for the day by tho
Grand Army Baud, Griffin Pent No.207 Ilrum
Corp and the Italian Orchestra. About 4
o'clock In the afternooi the great c ent of
the daj, the elres jiaraeli., took place. Each
potand rccimcntal organization whs tep
jeeentod in line with a larse number of incn
in lull uniform. :eeml thousand men were
in the ranks altogether. The parade was
reviewed hy Denaitmcnt Commander
Boyei and Past Commaudeis Dcnniston and
StewHrt. Six hundred unitormed Sous of
etcran, who w ere present, also gave a
lre-s parade.
Then followed numerous extemporaneous
addiesesbj prominent members of the or
der and tho remainder of the daj was given
up to enjoying the natural comforts of the
place, recounting the oft -told but ever-en-tertaminjr
stories of battle field and camp
lite, the renewing of rusty acquaintance-
ships ana a general good time, each individ
ual in the manner he chose. Hundreds of
women, j oung and old, tho wives and daugh
ters of the veterans, were there. In man v
case the entire families went with the hero
fathers to the gathering of veterans. Danc
ing was one of the principal features of the
da . there being plenty ot good music and
nimble feet to make tho dancing floor de
cidedly attractive. Games and amusements
of all kinds were provided for the younger
ones who attended.
THE OrXlCERS OF THE DAY.
Mnuiander of the Day George G. Boyor
appointed other officers of the day as fol
lows: Lieutenant Commander, W. O. Kussell,
of Post 151: Adjutant, Comrade Samuel P.
Town: Officer of the Day, Hugh Moi rison,
Post 8.V Officer of the Guard, F. C. Calhoun,
Tost 137.
Anioug the prominent men present were
Captain Sa es, Past Commander T. J. Stow
art, of Philadelphia, and Past Commander
Austin Curiam, of Philadelphia; Adjutant
General William McClelland, W. Hays Grier,
of Columbus. O : AW G. WiUiami, of Phila
delphia; A. P Burchflcld. of Altoona, and
Captain Kobert bmalls, a former slave, whose
exploits during the war made him famous.
It wasa late hour last evening when all the
comrades had left the sronnds.
THE RAILROADS KEPT BUSY.
While there w ere many features of the day
that will make it one long to be remembered
by thOM who took part in the exercises, the
principal one was the crowds. Every one
w ho had occasion to travel on a railroad
passing Kock Point yesterday will attest
that. One tram on the Erie ind Pittsburg
11 til road consisted of 15 cars, and everyone
"tta-. crowded like so many sardine boxes.
Trains coming into the city at the Union
depot all day were crowded to suffocation.
All etiquette was abandoned. No one pre
tended to gn o up his seat to a lady, be that
ladj old or oung Tho day was warm
oim'mli to make a man a oid all kinds of ex
ert inn. hut the hardest kind of work had to
be done bj nianj . That work was to get a
tcit and liold to it.
A gentleman who passed the picnic grove
in the afternoon says there was nothing to
be seen but heads scared a tree was in
t-ight. The peopled congregated were to
huddled togethei thatthoy made the grand
est sight of the day.
Finally, I prevailed on mv wife to use
Jlellin' Food, uhich she did"; to-day our
