NO ROOM FOR DOUBT.
Effects of the Trip of the Mcntmore
on the Erie Canal Project
WHAT IT MEANS FOR PITTSBURG.
Colonel T. P.-fioberts Gives Some Interest
in? Statistics.
THE-WHAIEBACKS CAN BE BUILT HERE
Each day the prospocts of Pittsburg as a
great commercial center grow more rosy.
The successful trip of the whaleback barge
is but another reason for pushing the Erie
Ship Canal, and there is no place where
those boats can be constructed as cheaply
as in Pittsburg. Regarding the practica
bility of building whaleback barges for lake
and ocean navigation in this city ilr. T. P.
Boberts, of the Lake Erie and Ohio River
Ship Canal Commission, remarked yester
day as follows:
""Without doubt the po-ition The Dis
patch has taken in its advocacy of the
ship canal project and vessel building in
this city is entirely warranted by the facts.
The report of the Canal Commission, which
in some way was pigeon-holed in Harris
burg, after a resolution authorizing the
printing of 3,000 copies had passed both
branches of the Legislature, referred to
the fact that for two miles above Davis
Island dam there was, when that structure
Tvas raised, a depth of 14 or 16 feet or more,
end the locality below JIcKee's Rocks on
the left bank was designated as affording
ample area for great ship yards, etc. The
barge which recently made the financially
successful trip from Dulnth to Liverpool
had to be lightened to six feet, nine inches
draft to pass the locks of the Lachine Canal
and the rapids of the St. Lawrence. ltn
the Lake Erie and the Ohio River Canal
opened, a designed by the commission, a
barge of treble the capacity of the "Ment
more" could leave this city loaded, carry
ing say 3,000 tons, to any port on the lakes.
iAHOEl: ST. LA'TOtENCE CASALS.
It will not be long either until the Cana
dian Government will have the St. Lawrence
canals enlarged to the capacity of the Wel
land. connecting Lake Eric with Lake On
tario. I am surprised that the Wetland
canal, the grandest regular ship canal in
.America, is not more frequently visited by
l'lttstmrgers and yet its course is within
sleht ot the columns of vapor rising from
Xiapara Falls. Visitors will there be able
to t-ce larpe steamers locked down a total
descent of S30feet by a series of 23 locks from
Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. The Pennsyl
vania ship canal would havo precisely
the same number of locks lifting up from
Lake Erie to the smninit of Craw
ford county, and 35 more locks down
to Pittshurg. One day's time is lost In lock
ing through the Welland, and it can easily
be shown that not more than two days' time
will be required on the t-hip canal lor loct
nze and sailing time from Pittsburg to the
lakes. These aie tho facts, and regarding
the practicability of construction nothing
could be more simple. No modern canal
project with which I am acquainted meets
with so few natural difficulties in con
struction as the Lake Erie and Ohio river
would, and yet many of our neoplo seem to
take more interest in the Panama or Isth
mus of Corinth cannls, here the difficulties
teem almost insurmountable, than they do
ci tnis project eo near tneir Domes.
A GREATER XBED AT HOME.
"There is not now a total truffle of 3 000,000
tons per annum, nor Is there more than that
to be expected between the Pacific and At
lantic Oceans, while Pittsburg and the fur
naces along the canal will receive 4,000,000
tons of ore, and ship back as many tons of
coal, making certainly, including building
stone, lumber, cement, bricks, glass and
ironware, etc., a total business of 9,000,000 to
lO.ooo.OtOof tons ready for the canal, -w lth an
illimitable growth In prospect.
Tho report of tho Canal Commission dis-cu-sed
very thoroughly the questions ln
oldin the delay to lake steamers by their
use of the canal in coming to Pittsburg and
it was demonstrated that ore, lumber and
gram steamers would find more profit at the
end of tho year in coming here ttran tany
now do. Those who think differently have
not investigrtcd the matter very tborousrh
ly. The commission was extremely desirous
tit dcclophi!i tho facts regarding the ue of
the canal by large steamers, and reached the
conclusion mentioned above. Regarding
barges on the cunul, no calculations aro re
quired to nrove their entire adaptability in
the Pittsburg trade with the lakes.
A2." EIsTIRE REVOLUTION- PREDICTEB.
"Individually I think the advent of the
-whale-back barge threatens an entire revo
lution in tho carrying trade of tho great
staple products. The verv largest class of
those Large- could bo built in Pittsburg and
tent to New Orleans as often as m e have coal
barge ires, and the-e rises are not so infre
quent as to raslic their construction here a
precarious ciiterprise.
Purine; 1S0 there were 195 days of sevon
feet, or greater, depth on the Ohio from
1'lttsburg in la'91 12h da s, though the aver
age is inewhat less than even the last
named year. Probably 100 days per year
cmld be relied on, and only in exceptional
V Jrs two months uiaj elapse vithout a
barge rise. Any one rise Mould, of course,
iiermit entire Ilcet of them to bo taken out.
'ntsburg ought to be able tosupiily the At
lantic ocean with such barges. 1 think that
oven barges designed to be towed, either on
the lakes or the ocean, should be provided
with uuxiliarj engines of power sufficient to
carry them into port in case of necessitv,
and lor moving themselves through canals
or about harbors, wharves, etc. A style of
engine easily managed and of small coal con
sumption, capable of moving the barges four
to sii. miles an hour, would deduct but little
lrom their carrying capacity and add but
little to their cost.
