BOUNCE OF A 3TAME.
How the St. Kicholas Building Be
came Possessed of the Title.
CAPTAIN HOUGH'S SAD LOYfi STORY.
Nicholas Longworih Playedt Dollars Against
Cupid and Won.
BONDS WERE BROKEN BY THE SIIERIFF
Few people who stop to admire the stately
edifice, one of the finest law buildinprs in the
w orld, lately erected on tho corner of Fourth
m enue and Grant street, by Hon. John Pil
rell, the St. Kicholas law building, knon
how it oauie by its name. As tho
incidents that caused tho christening aro
very romantic, they aro worth more than a
parsing notice. The name was taken from
the old hotel that occupied tho site for some
40 years, and around tho original the ro
jnanco clustered.
The name St. Kicholas was not given in
honor of that child of many prayers,
St. Nicholas of Myra. to whom
hitory, or perhaps partlv tradition,
pao great prominenco during tho
reiRiis of Maximilian and Diocletian and
Confctantine, emperors of Rome, this saint
alo being accorded a place in tho delibera
tions of the C'onncil of Nice, but the cele
brated old hostclrj ti as named In honor of

ashes as Captain Hough's bodv has since
done is not known, but one day Nicholas
Ixnigworth sued out a prelim nary injunc

wrath swore to do oung Hough up. The
boat was at the time on her way up
from Louisville, and Hough got wind ot
Ixmgworth's intentions and went ashore in
Kentucky, somo miles below P01 kopclis.
CUPID BLOCKED Br MAMMON.
As the boat was considerable in debt, with
prospects that she would not woik her way
out eoon, Longworth had no trouble in buy
ing a claim agamsi her, and when she
rounded to at the Cincinnati wharf a Sheriff
was on hand and without any unnecessiry
ceremony cnaincu her to the wnarl log.
Other creditors hearing of the state ot affairs
fcwooped down like a nock of buzzards and
Wakefield, seeing that his mission was
ended, quietly stepped down and out and
went into other business, and subsequently
prospered.
John Hough, pursued by the fear of falling
under the paw of tho wealthiest man of the
West, had no reBt for the soles of his feet so
long as he staged in the United States, and
he drifted away toward the Southern cross,
finally coining to a halt somewhere In South
America Being a oung man ot business
ability and, by this time, of considerable ex
perience, he soon amassed a considerable
fortune, for that time, it being estimated
In the neighborhood of a quarter of
a million. With abundant wealth
came a sense of power and NichoKs Long
worth's fierce countenance was no longer
nightly photographed on young nougli's
cerebral ganglia, so he decided to come back
to Pittsburg In due time be arm ed and
bought a lot and on it built the hotel, nam
ing it after tlip Christian end of his adver
sary's name and preliirg"M-," an honorary
title which Longuorth probablj appreciated
us little as lio had at ono timo the

Mr. Hough lived on apparcntlv as happily
