GREAT CERXSAXTHEMUJI DISPLAY Details of the 'Wonderful Show to Be Given in Central Rink. HiriUONAIRES OFFER BIG rREMlTUIS Pittsburg is to be treated to tho greatest flower show ever held in the country. It is to bo given In Grand Central Rink, com mencing November 10, and lusting until tho 15th. The richest and rarest plants known to tho florist's art will bo on exhibition. Al though the plants and flowers will all bo contributed, tho affair is to bo conducted on a seal) so magnificent that at least $25,000 will bo expended in decorations and in ar- J ranging lliu VAUIUil, m line muusuuua vi uw- lars will be offered in premiums For tins wondrons display of beauty West ern Pennsylvania will be indebted to tho Pittsburg and Allegheny Florists and Gnr denors' Club. At it regular meeting yester day it was Anally decided to give the exhi bition. Another meeting will be held next Tuesday, when all tho arrangements will bo completed. As tho club includes in Its membership 150 or tho leading florists and gardeners of Allegheny county and is backed by tho mo-t wealthy citizen there can be no doubt of its success. Although there will be premiums ranging from $10 up to the hundreds for line exhibits, still larger ones will be offered by Pittsburgcrs on spe cial plants. Henry Phipps wll offer a big reward for the flnen collection of cliry-anthcmums. Charles. I. Clark, whoso admiration for orchids is nearly as great as his love for haseball and fast horses, will give a big premium for the lucky florist who can bring out tho greatest combinations of form and color in these strange plants. OT1IKKBIG PEI-JIICMS OFrnitCD. It is alo understood that Paul Hacke will Tint up n sum of money for which florists can compete The same thing v ill be done by IL C Frick, Mr. Armstrong, the coke manu fHCturer, and otners who are enthusiastic Jlouer fanner-. Tho leading clothiers will also offer a pure. Ai the club believes chrysanthemums to be the Bios' fashionable flower at present, a grcnt deal of space will be given up to them. The; flowers lmo certainly reached a pre.ttei perfection than ever did any other plan! in o Mion a nine, jit some ox mo recent flower shows chrysanthemums 11 lncho in diameter w ero displayed, and it is l-lievod that even this record will be sur-pas-ed. Not all ol tho great show, however, will bo taken up by the crjsanthemums. Tho w hole ot Central Kink will be laid off in t o spacious gardeners, with fountains playing on all sides. They will be under the super vision of two of the most famous la ndscapa guldens in the world, who vie with each other in the beauty of their various arrange ments. There will bo forests of waving uilms and immense banana trees. Every window and the stage will be banked with flow ers, ferns and palms. UXDER A GREAT CAXOPV OF KOSES. The greatest feature will bo the ceiling Cecoration which will be made up entirely of roses with tho various shades blended in the most beautiful combination of color. It w ill bo literally a sky of roses. Tho florists say they can keep the flowers fresh for ten days and all their perfect beauty can easily be retained during the fourdavsof the ex hibit. An idea of the grandeur of the show can be understood when we realize that the richest and rarest plants from all the hot houses of the florists and gardeners in the two cities besides the best and pret tiest from the conservatories of Pittsburg millionaires, will be placed on exhibition. Then, to complete it all, every flowor and plant of any importance in the Phipps con servatories in Allegheny Parks will be trans planted in Central Kink. Yet even all that imposing display w ill not form a tenth part oi tne great nowersnow Theonlv trouble that the projectors of this display are enconntcrinir is from the Exposition Society. The officials of that or-, ganlration want the flower exhibit to form n part of that enormous combination this fall. The florists, however, want more space than the Exposition Society will give, and thej also claim it would not give them suf ficient time to eet their plants in shape. Tho expense incumbent uion the production is intended to be made up by charging an ad mission fee. work ox Tnn exhibition. Not much real work will be done on the exhibition until the end of the month, as the international meeting of the Society of American Florists takes p'aee in Toronto, Canada, August IS, 19, 20 and 2L The headquarters of the society will be at the Queen's Hotel. About 100 mem bers of the club will go iroin Pittsburg, but by the time the exhibition comes off. In November, it is expected that there will be 200 members in the club. The programme of the exercises is gotten tip in a neat pamphlet, with a clover com bination of the coat of nruis of United States and Canada on the first page. Tho time will be taken np in discussions of trade subjects nnd in investigating horticultural matters. One of the speakers will boH. B. Beatty, ol Oil City. J. W. Lndwig, of Alle gheny, is onooi the vice presidents of the society, and is tho founder of the local club. A PALACE CAB FOB DOGS. A Tennsjlvanla Itallruad Official Will Bag Oce.ms of "Western Game. A car that attracted unusual attention ptished the Union station last evening. It i us what appeared to be an ordinary bag gage car, ith the exception that it had a barn door on the side, and was fancifully painted. Attractive gold letters streaming across its side, announced that it was a "horse and buggy car,"' though it was filled with doss. The canines are the property of Frank 1 hotnpsou.l- lrst Vice-President of the Pennsylvania Ilailioad, and he is sending tlii'iu wcht lor the purpose of searching for quuil and other game w hen the fall season opens. Beneath the car. betw een the trucks, was swung an Iron girder bridge used in load ing horses in tho car, and the arrangement was so ingenious that tnanv railroaders ex amined it with interest. Pho trustlc-liko frame was built so lightly that it was nota difficult matter to make it'lasf to the bottom or the car, though it was odd enough to at tract a crow d. STICKING BT ITS 0FFICEB. A Coraopolis Church Completely Torn Up Over a Sermon. Heel and toe religion got a terrible shak ing np in the Presbyterian Church in Cora opolis last Sunday. The event has been the sensation of the town since. In the absence of Ilev. fe. r. W. Cochran, the regu lar pastor, Itev. J. A. Donthett, pas tor of tho United Presbyterian Church wns asked to preach, and rollinir up his sleeves and spitting on his hands He began by attacking dancing in a way that made a number of the congregation squirm, as thoy are notoriously addicted to the nleosure. and evidently some of them think thevdo no more harm by it than did David when he danced a jig beloro the ark. Not only did the minister denounce dancing, but gibbeted the owner of the hall in which this diver sion is practiced. It is hardly worth while to say that the congregation are divided in opinion, but they aro not arguing the caso on its merits as yet, as the onslaught was so nnexpeoted that they have not yet recovered from tho shock, home whoaro otherwise rated ANo. 1 in matters of Christian walk and conversa tion, but are nevertheless very fond not only of the stately square dance, but of the schot tish, polka and even the dreamy waltz, have tremors traverse their spinal columns when tLey think of tho preacher's excoriation. CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE P00B. Good Showing In the Worthy Iteport of tho Poor Association. Atthc regular monthly meeting of the As sociation for the Improvement of tho Poor a vote of thanks was tendered to Captain Harry Gould and his two associates for the very successful excursion to the poor chil dren and women on July 23. Three children were placed in Sabbath schools, and two persons were placed in hospitals. HEARING KESTOBED. 3IR. GEORGE HELMAN, WDO WAS REN DERED TOTALLY DEAF FROJt LA GRIPPE. nighly Elated Over Ms Recovery, Which, He Says, Is Partially Dne to the Good Judgment Exercised by Ills Tamlly Physician. 3Ir. George H el man, a school teacher liv ing at Manor station, Westmoreland coun ty, has been one of Pittsburg's daily visi tor the past three weeks. On approaching him at the depot he said : "I have reasons to be a very happy man, which you will un derstand more liilly with a little explana tion. The 27th day of last March I was taken with la grippe, which left me totally deaf and unfitting me for any kind of busi ness. After giving my family physician a fair trial he suggested tliat" 1 had bet ter come to Pittsburg and try electricity in some good, reputable institu tion w-hcre I would have it administered in a scientific manner. Acting on his advice and noticing that the Pittsburg papers spoke very highly of the Electrical and Medical Institute at 442 Penn avenue, I placed my self tinder their treatment. You can see the results. I can hear ordinary conversa tion now very distinctly, and wilftake charge of a school again the 1st of September. The. I Medical Director diagnosed my case as con gestion and thickening ot the mucmis mem brane of the middle ear with closure of the eustachiantubes, due to catarrh and a para lyzed condition of the auditory nerve irom subacute meningitis, due to la grippe. "It is simply astonishing the number of patients they have treating who are afflicted with the various chronic ailments nh -.. rheumatism, neuralgia, paralysis, spinal and bin diseases, nervous prostration, etc., and I tell you they are all highly delighted with the results. I understand'thcy do not treat consumption, claiming they cannot obtain results to warrant it, which I think is very honorable in them." Slmen's Bargains! FARMERS GET A SHOW. Unusnally Brilliant Prospects for HeaTy Crops This Fall. INSECT PESTS ABE VERT SCARCE. A Startling Decrease in the Ranks of the Colorado Beetle. HISTORY OF ITS RAVAGES IX AMERICA Notwithstanding tho fact that wet weather is gi eatly impeding tho operations of tho farmers, and -some of them aro only getting two cents a quart clear of freight for their milk about what it is worth to extract it from the cow shipped to theclty, they havo very great reason to bo thankful on one score, and especially thankful that it is something for which politicians cannot claim credit. Not since lf60 has there been n season In this locality when Insect ravages were so slight as this year. Cucnmber bugs, potato bugs, nnd, so fnr, cabbage bugs ana worms havo made scarcely nny impress of devastation, and the salo of bug powder and spraying liquids has greatly fallen off. It is true that everything , is late this year except what was raised under glass, and the lato frosts were discouraging, but if they effected tho destruction of the insect horde they were worth all they cost. The curcullo alouo seems to have survived to kill tho plums, as the ground under many trees in some sections is covered with immature plums, all branded with the crescent which in sotno localities gives the beetle the name of "tho littlo Turk." TOMATOES IS" GOOD SHAPE. Tomato plants look healthy, and their ene mies probably shared in the common insect ruin. J.D.Hamilton says that there is a plant locally known as wild vermifuge, which grows abundantly in the streets of Sbousetown, and that the cabbage worm has so strong an antipathy for it that a sprig of it placed within tho leaves of each grow ing cabbage is a sure guard for that head. It is also made into tea and the fluid sprinkled on cabbage, but it seems that plant wijl not be much needed this year. It is true it is not too late yet for tho worm to do its work, but as tho vegetable has es caped other pests this one alone will not bo hard to fight. The ladybug has cortalnly saved tho po tato crop and where it is poor it is the fault of tho cultivator. Already, home-grown potatoes aro so plentv that they aro scarce worth sendiug to market. A description of the potato beetle and its destroyer the lady bug is of interest: The lady bug is a beetle of tho family coo cinellida;, ordor coleoptcra, so called from its graceful lorm and delicate coloring. Its eggs are laid in clusters and the larvaj are lor the most partcarniverous, feeding on plant lice and bark lice and small insects of all sorts. One, however eats the leaves of plants. The adult beetles aro in tho main Budacious, but sometimes feed on pollen, ne kind, known as the rosebug, is not a favorito with women. Tho soecies are very numerous and are variously called ladvbng, lady-clock, lady-cow, lady-fly, etc It seems that insects, like dogs, generally have their day, though a few, like the locusts on which John the Baptist fed, endure Irom age to age. THE POTATO BUG'S EVOLUTION. Fifteen or 20 years ago tho potato bug was an insect very different in appearance from the Colorado beetle. It had a long body and was active, nnd could even fly a short dis tance. Its ravages were frequently stayed by driving it out of a patch into dried grass and then setting tho latter on Are. It had the same properties as tho canthnrldze and people were sometimes badly blistered by incautiously crushing them in their hands. Some people think tho day of tho Colorado beetle is over, while othersaro apprehensive that their fewness thi9 year will make peo ple careless, so that they will generally al low the beetle to go to seed and make the condition "worse. These do not stop to con sider that if nature has decided to abate the scourge she can do it moro effectually through even an insignificant little bug than man can with his paris green and lon don purple. . The Colorado beetle hasn't any wings vorth speaking of, but he gets there all tho Bamojnst as eflectivoly as did his predeces sor. While on the subject, the learned name of tho Colorado pest and Its history may us well be given. Naturalists say it u a chrys omclld beetle, tho notorious uoryphora. do cemllncnta, which up to 1885 or lfcSG lived in the Kocky Mountain region, foeding on tho wild solanum rostratuin, but which as the cultivated potato reached its habitat, in creased enormously and began to spread to the 1 jist, reaching the Atlantic coast at sev eral points in 1874, and since then has had things pretty much its own way. It hasgot ton to Europo several times, but has always been promptly stamped out. Both larva) and beetle teed on tho leaves of tho potato, and the pupa is formed in the earth at tho foot of the plant. There are three genera tions annually, and tho perfect beetles hibernate. A PISETTT SLOW TRAVELER. Ilad the nntion known it, it would havo paid well to prevent the cultivation of tho potato say on n strip 300 miles wldo east of the Kocky Mountains, as it isn't likely it could have made its way in great numbers without its favorite lood to subsist upon. As Europe has been ablo to stamp it out it is evident that it might have been prevented Irom reaching the Mississippi, as it required, tinder favorable conditions, 20 vears to travel from Denver to Boston. Farmers should encourage the increase of bugologists nnd insectivorous birds. The former must have inducements holdout to them.butthe birds would increase of them selves if tho roblu and flecker shooters were suppressea. Two-Thirds of the- Arrests Were Made in tho First District. Mayor's Clerk Ostermaler yesterday com pleted the report of work done by the police magistrates of the city for the month of July. This is called the Mayor's report. It shows n big falling off from tho report of July, 1S90, and the report for tho six months ending July 31, this year, also shows a big financial decreaso from that of tno corre sponding period of last year. In July, 1890, the receipts of the office wore $0,444 62; in July 1891, they were $4,957 83. The receipts for tho first six months of tho flseal year or 1S90 were $37,933 03; for tho corresponding six months of this year, $34,134 33. Tho estimated receipts from this office for this year are $77,OCO, according to the appro priation ordinance, but as will be seen, unless there is a big increase in the coming six months, the receipts will fall fnr below what the Finance Commltteo expected. The only magistrate whoso return shows an increase for last mouth was Magistrate Gripp, his receipts being $174 larger than for Julv, 18". Tho magistrates of the Second and Third districts ran away below their last year's reports. The July report shows that 1,502 persons weroarrest'od by the police during the month, or whom 981 were gathered in in Inspector McAleese's district, the balance being nbout equally divided be tween tho Second and Third districts. Magistrato Gripp tried 524 cases and turned in $1,839 13 In fines, forfeits and fees; Magis trate McKenna tried 457 cases and turned in $1,238 SO; Magistrate Losllo turned in $232 30 from t9 cases; Magistrate Hyndman, 202 cases and$S32 60; Magistrate Succop, 230 cases and $715. Drunkenness was tho canso of 449 arrests, disorderly conduct, 692; suspicious persons, 106; vagrancy, 99: keeping speak-easies, 41; visiting speak-casies, 97; violating "city or dinances, 62.
