of a lot of oil -well supplies stolen from
Sucss & Harden, of Boss township, last
February Tho evidence in tho case was
not stiflieient to -how the defendant had
been guilty of recciv ing stolen goods, but it
did show that he was gnilty of the larceny
of the goods. According to instructions
from .Tudije Stowe, the Jurj returned a ver
dict of not guiltv, and the defendant, in
steid of being discharged, was ordered
placed under $500 bail to answer at the nest
term for larceny. Tho order was made by
Judge Stowe.
Charle- AVeisbcrg was tried and found
guilty on a charge of selling liquor without

was Mr Eliza Slattcrj. Tho result of this

CANNOT BE HURRIED.
The Appointment of a ChicfEngineer Will
Not Come for Some Days Yet Under
writers Pleased With the Provisions or
the Xcw Ordinance.
Chief Brown does not propose to bo hur
ried m the least in tho appointment of a
Chief Engineei of the Fire Bureau. Scores
of speculations on the possiblo choice have
not advanced the appointment n day. The
latest name produced bv tho gossips was
Miles Humphreys. Chief Brown when asked
about it vesterday replied.
"I will mako .no appointment until the
Mayor signs the ordinance, and ho may not
sign it. However, if he does, I will submit
the names of five or six persons who pos
sess more or less of the requisite abilities
for the placo to the Board ot Underwriters,
und ask them to select the best man in their
judgment for the work. I will be go erned
largelj by their decision. But if the Mnj or
does sign the ordinance, it may not be for
sei eral days, and it will be a week after
ward before the appointment is made. As
to Mi. Humphreys, I have not talked to him
about the matter nor has he spoken to mo
about it. The same thing can be said of half
a dozen other men who have been named
for the place."
The Board of Firo Underwriters is satis
fied with the proposed improvements to tho
Bureau of Fire. Major McCandless, Charles
W. Gerwig, W. .1. Patterson and Fire
Marshal McFadden, representing the under
writers, met w ith May or Gourley, Controller
Morrow, Chief Brown and Select Council
man Lnmbie in the Mayor's ofllce yesterday
morning The new ordinance w as road and
thoiouglily discussed. The underwriters
oxnressed" themselves as favoring a flro-
boat, water tower, and other features
nrovided for in the ordinance. Thev also
argued in favor of an increased number of
fireplugs They produced figures to show
that Allegheny, in proportion to her popu
lation, has a great many more fire plugs
than Pittsburg, and that Cleveland, with
about the s .me number of people as Pitts
burg, has twice as many fire plugs.
In speaking of the adantages of a fire
boat the underwriters stated that it would
be especially serviceable along the South
side, where at present the greater number
of fires result in total loss. All buildings m
the citj within l.tOO feef of tho rivers can be
protected by it. Controller Morrow ob
jected to the"provieion for more firemen, on
account of the expense of hiring them. But
the underw riters insisted on the necessity
of more men. Chief Brown explained the
workings of a water tower.
After the meeting Mayor Gourley said he
had not jet signed the ordinance. Ho wdl
take no action until after another confer
ence between himself and Chief Brown,
hich is fixed for this morning.
WIKES OK A DEAD LEVEL.
A Suggestion on the Subject of a Pending
City Ordinance.
A great many people, while anxious to see
the unsightly and dangerous telegraph, tele
phone, street car and electric light wires
come dow n, are not satisfied to have them
buried, as at present is the plan. They .say
telephones would be practically useless ad
at an moment thej might be forced by the
burning out of a w ire to borrow their neigh
bor sinstiuinent for peihnps an hour or 36
hours before the injury be repaired. Busi
ness aud professional men who have dis
carded old-time methods of doing business
could scarce get along without the telephone
now, and they protest against the annoy
ance and uncertaintj" possibly attending
the burying of the w ires.
C. Ivimberland says there is no necessity
of burj mg the wires according to the pres
ent method. He saj a, if needed, iron bevmg
of such strength as to stand an j concussion
coming from a ten ton wagonload can bo
laid in the streets nt the level of tho
pavement, and the wires put into them.
Then when a w ire goes w rong tho repair cam,
be made in a few minutes alter the damaged
place is located; the iion box can be opened
teniporarilj- and closed In an hour or per
haps in ne minutes and travel not delated
or the streets spoiled bj lcingdug up almost
daily, as he claims they wonld be if tho
w ires w ere all buriod bj- the method now In
use.
