of She death of Comrado Hugh Mcllwaine at
Chicago, no served in the One Hundred
and Second llegimeut, as Lieutenant of Com
pany P. Ho was a brother of Colonel Will
iam Mcllwaine. of the Oncllundredand Sec
ond, i ho was killed at Cold Harbor. Com
rade Mcllwaino bad many friends in this
vicinitv. He was a member of the Thir
teentlTltegimental Association.
OrE evening last week somo of the promi
nent members of Knapp's Battery met at tho
residence of Joscpli Klinefelter, and with
their families proceeded to organize a sur
prise party to visit Lieutenant Adam Shaw
and familv. of Squirrel Hill. The wholo
compnuy was captured on the route by Com
rade Shaw's wife and children, who "laid in
ambush" and took the party of skirmishers
bj surprise. They were led off to a royal
good supper and delightful entertainment.
Comrade Lklakd M. Armor, a prominent
member of Post 162, aid-de-camp to Comman
der in Chief Veazcy, and for many years
traveling salesman for Anshutz, Bradborry
& Co., met with a very painful and singular
accident while coming to tho city on the
Pittsburg and Westorn liailioad on last
Monday evening, by receiving a gunshot
woundln the lelt e c. The shot is supposed
to have been from a Plobert riflo. The
wound is very painful and the sight of the
eve is destroyed. Comrade Armor has the
e5"nipathy ol'his old comrades, as well as his
manj friends in tho stovo trade, with which
he lias been so long identified.

At the last meeting of Xo. 6 a very compli
mentary resolution was adopted favoring
Comrade John W. Morrison, of this county,
for State Treasurer.
The members of Xo. 6 have respectfully
called the attention of Mayor Wyinan to the
fact that Comrade J. L. Evans is being
boosted for Police Judge.
Adjctast H. L Fuxmee, of Xo. 6, thinks
West Virginia soldiers were the best, and he
is preparing an elaborate aijgument to prove
this on the evening of July 9.
Comrade F. L. Bbacit visited Xo. 6 at the
last meeting, and, as usual, made it lively
Tor the boys. One of tho oldest comrades re
marked: "That b03's got lots of life left in
him." Dr. Braun belongs to Xo. L
Comrade Johj Hurrel, an old veteran of
the Xiuth Pennsylvania Reserves, attended
the last meeting of Xo. 6. As ho lives in Mo
Keesport his presence should shame the ab
sence of some comrades who live only a few
squares from the hall.
Comrade Charles IT. Heaslet, of Xo. 6, the
blind soldier of Willis street, has been quite
sick of late. Ho is a $72 per month pensioner.
.Besides being totally blind he is helpless
from paralysis. He enjoys a talk with an
old soldier, especially one of the Pennsyl
vania Beserve boj s.

cational Kens Small Talk for Teachers
and Pupils.
Superintendent Luckoy was one of theState
Board of Normal School Examiners, who
held examinations at the Slippery Bock Nor
mal School last -week. Of the class of 1SJ
graduates all passed; tho entire Junior class
of 40 did the same. Mr. Luokey was surprised
at the progress of the school for It is com
paratively new. It is located in the quiet
little town of Centerrille, Butler county, and
belongs to the Pittsburg district Its
management is excellent. Dr. Maltby is
principal. Mr. Luckoy states that ho never
paw such good discipline, and yet so uncon
scious. Mrs. Maltby, tho principal's wife, is
a great favorite and has much influence
over the students.
The New Braddock Teachers.
Tho Board of Education of Braddock bor
ough, at its regular meeting Monday even-

A new department was created, that of
supervising teacher, on Who is to teach

son was elected to that position. The board
tnen accepted the speculations for the
new Second ward school building, whrch
is to be of brick, to cost about $25,000.
Thursday evening the School Board elected
tho following new teachers: Prof. M. J.
Aiken, principal of the First irard school;
Miss Ida Clark, of Pittsburg, room No. i,
and Miss Ada'Liken, of Coraopolis, primary
'teacher, all ror the First ward, which is now
filled. It is thought Miss Fredericks will be
transferred to the High School. The salary
of the High School principal was raised from
$70 to85 per month, and that of the princi
pals of the wurd schools from $70 to $S5 per
month. A number of other teachers were
raised to $60, while each was given a goodby
proportionate Increase. Tho board decided
to fix the tax levy at G mills, which is i mill
higher than last year.
The Oakland School Board.
The organization of the Oakland fiehnn
Board resulted in the re-election of the old
'officers: President, J. Hulderheide; Secre
tary, vt Uliam J. Smith; Treasurer, William
Holmes. Mr. J. Dougherty is the new mem
ber of the board. "A Koyal Time" is the pro
gramme for the children of the Oakland dis
trict next Friday, for the Board of Directors
has completed arrangements to treat the
three schools of the district to ice cream
cake, fruit, etc. Tho Bellefield and Sylvan
avenue schools will partake of these relishes
in the morning, the boho School in the after
noon. Tho picnic, which was contemplated at
the latter school, will be dispensed with in

Nearly every school building in thecity
"will close school next Friday with either a
picnic or s.ome other celebration. It will be
reception day at the St. Clair Schools, and
the Board of Directors will also give a treat
to tho pupils in lieu of the customary picnic.
The Washington Schools will have a fete on
tho Arsenal Grounds noxt Friday. The
Great Western Band will be in attendance
until evening. Tho Mt. Washington School
will have a splendid exhibit or school work
Wednesday and Thursday, with jubilee day
Friday. Tho Humboldt School children will
be found at Kinney's Grove June 26. June
29. at Aliquippa, is tho date the Duquesne
(First ward) School has for its outing.
A Large Supply of Teachers.
Prof. Samuel Hamilton, Superintendent of
Schools of Alleshesj- County, conducted an
examination of aolass of aspirants lor teach,
era' yearly county certificates at Chartiers
borough Wednesday. There -were 93 mem
bers in the class, which -was one of the larg
est examined this year so far, yet out of that
number but eight were male applicants.
The examination at Chartiers was
the sixth of a series of nine
regular ones held each summer
leason at various points throughout
the county. Up to the present time the
number of persons who have taken the work
that entitles them to certificates ir they can
mastor it has been unprecedented. The class
at Turtle Creek had 72 members; the next,
at Coraopolis, had 27; Elizabeth, ; Sewick
lcy. 4."; Etna, 72; Chartiers, 93, making a total
ot 324. applicants. The next examination
will be held at McKeesport next Tuesday.
Then will follow ono at Tarentum. and tho
last at Oakland. But this will finish
tlio regular series of classes only.
A special examination will be
heldatBraddockaboutthe end of August,
for tho convenience of the Braddock teach
ers especially, and those also in other dis
tricts of the county who could not, or would
not, attend any ot the regular classes. It is
expected that this special class will have 100
more members than any class of the regular
scries in tho county. Prof. Hamilton be
lieves thoro will bo more aspirants this year

The average number for a season is about
650. This year there promises to be more
than 800.
