MAYOR GOUELEY'S FIBST TRIAL. lie Presides Over the Suit of the TVharf mater Against the Mayflower. Mayor Gourley presided over his first case yesterday morning at Magistrate McKenna's office. The suit was brought by AVharf master Toole acainst the owners of tho steamer Mayflower. Under an ordinance the Wliarlmaster claims the right to designate the landings of various boats. The Mayflower was given si place above Reno's wharf boat, but so interfered with the latter that it was ordered to a new landing below tho wharf boat. The plaintiff claimed this order had not been complied with. Tho ordinance provides that the Mayor shall hear all cases arising from its violation. City Attorney Moreland appeared for the plaintiff and Edwnrd Ferguson, Esq., for the dctendants. After hearing some testimony the Mayor decided to reserve his decision until noon to-day In tho meantime the parties concerned are endeavoring to settle the difficulty amicably, in event of which His Honor will dismiss the case. Rode Over tho City Authorities. One of the unaccounted for actions of cor porations in Allegheny is the fact that the Pleasant Valley load has laid tracks on streets over which thev havo no franchise President Kenny will, "however, ask for the right to have them remain. Discussion About the Best Kind of Lamps The Davy Considered Past Its Prime "Where Operators Are Afraid of Labor Saving aiachlnery. The "Western Pennsylvania Central Mining Institute met in the Court House yesterday' morning, John McMurray in the chair, "Will iam Bidden, secretary. The morning session was spent discussing a constitution. One was adopted for the government of the body as also bylaws. At the afternoon session Mr. Adams ex plained the operation of his improved bee hive coke oven, which lie claims reduces the cost of burning coke almost 73 per cent, the cost at present being 23 cents, and by his oven but C cents. The contrivance is a movable bottom of wrought iron, with one thickness of fire brick in it, and this, when the coal is roasted, is dropped upon a truck running on rails and run out cooled off, when the charge is easily removed. Mr. Adams explained that the coal on the bottom of the oven being the last to burn, the bottom did not get verv hot during the charge; in fact, he said he could almost bear to put his hand for a moment in It. Inspector Duncan thonght it strange, if all the inventor claimed was correct, that oper ators were not clamoring to get a chance to introduce his method. jlr. Duncan seemed to think that the chief endandalmof a coke operator's existence was to make money, and they ought, in the nature of things, to be crying for the new ovens. Mr. Adams said he had been unable to get operators to test his apparatus, notwith standing it had been five to seven months in operation at North Mansfield and Dunbar respectively. One came and looked atltand went away and a few others happened to come when the oven was not in operation Hls remarks might have been taken to lndl cate an opinion that coke operators already had so good a thing that they did not care to trouble themselves with any improvement. Mr. Stein let all concerned into the perlect light, or at least his explanation was re tarded as plausible by some people. He said that operators in Europo were atraid of labor-saving machinery lest it produce trouble among the laboring classes, but he suggested a somowhat dissimilar reason for the action of "Western Pennsylvania opera tors in the statement that If hy the use of this oven four men would do the work of 25, there would bo a great falling off in the sale of goods by the company stores. No one could at once get over the force of this argu. ment, "Mining as It "Was. Is and Ought to Be." was the subject of a paper read by "William Gillie, of Courtney, Pa. The cardinal feature of the paper was an exhortation to have mining districts separated into smaller ones than at present, without connection by leav ing strong ribs of coal between them. This would obviate the necessity of having aper tures that may carelessly be left open. Then, too, in case of explosion the loss of life and destruction of property would not be so great as at present. "What Modern Safety Lamp "Would Bo Best to Adopt for Use in Mines?" was the subject for general debate. It appeared to be a pretty general opinion that the Davy lamp, though a good thing as a pioneer, and in its day, and reflecting great credit on its inventor, is now a back number, Mr. Duncan saying that by means of the Shaw test of gas in mines, he, Duncan, had found a lamp that was sensi tive to per cent of gas, while it took some thing like 3 per cent to show on the Davy. He said the best and safest lamp be knew was difficult to operate, as it went out when held at an angle. Tho discussion of this subject occupied tho rest of the day, and at Mr. Adams' sug gestion a committee was appointed to ex periment with different lamps. It was ordered that the constitution and by-laws be printed, and some applicants for membership wore taken into the fold. AVill Commence Running To-Momrw. The now electrio cars on the Birmingham Traction line will go into operation at 12 o'clock to-morrow. There are 31 cars now available, but of these nine will be held In reserve. A few of tho cars have been run ning at night to give the motormen experi ence before the opening day. EOR- NERVOUS EXHAUSTION Use Borsford's Acid Phosphate. Dr. H. C. McCoy, Algona, la., says: "I have used it in cases of dyspepsia, nervous exhaustion and wakefulness, with pleasant results. Also think it of great service in de pressed condition of the system resulting from biliary derangement." At a special meeting of the Allegheny County Brewers Association on Thursday, June 18, the following resolutions were adopted: Whereas, Divine Providence has seen fit to remove from our midst our friend and member, Mr. Edward Frauenheim; and, "Whereas, "We keenly feel the absence of one of our oldest associates from our meet ings, therefore be it Resolved, That Ave sincerely condole with the family of the deceased, and by this act express the deep sorrow which each and all of his fellow members feel at his departure. Resolved, furthermore, that this be spread in full upon the minutes, and a copy thereof sent to the bereaved family. Be it also resolved that we attend the interment of our deceased fellow member. T. DOES $40,000 Worth of actual bona fide sales since Hay 1 indicate anything as to the value and per manency of the investments daily being made at ELLWOOD ON THE C0NN0QUENESSING. People of sagacity have already realized from 25 to 50 per cent on their purchases. A well-known Pittsburg attorney, purchased four lots on May 4 at $500 each, paying $25 cash on each lot, balance on monthly payments. Three weeks later two of these lots were resold to Jlr. John Goepinger, of Youngstown, O., for $1,400, the profit being paid in cash. One week later Mr. Goepinger was offered $300 for his bargain, or 70 PER CENT More than the Lots Cost on May 17. The offer was refused and a handsome three-story brick store building will be erected at once. This is not an isolated case, but simply one of many. There are a con siderable number of unsold lots at Original Prices, But they are going fast, as special sales oc cur every "Wednesday and Saturday. The movement of residence lots keeps pace with bnsiness property 2 residence lots netted their owner $500 last week, sell ing at that advance over the cost 10 days before. Over 1,000 Men "Will be given employment by manufactur ing enterprises actually under way; build ings lor which nave either been started or will be this summer. This alone means a permanent population of 4.000 SOULS, On the basis of the usual directory computa tion four persons to one name. Act Promptly and Intelligently. The class of investors in Ellwood realty is unusually high. There are no auction sales, free lunches, brass bands or other "clap trap." "When people go to Ellwood it means business. The price of property is low so low, in fact, that a handsome profit is sure to those who invest now. Prices are much lower, comparatively, than any where else in the real estate market, and terms of sale are easy, $25 DOWN, Balance on monthly payments. Ellwood is unquestionably the coming summer resort of "Western Pennsylvania, and, with the picturesque loveliness of the scenery along the Connoquenessing, and the many charms of the surrounding country, it will possess attractions for thousands who will find rest and recreation and a summer home of unequaled comfort and convenience in the new HOTEL OLIVER ! The hotel is located on a commanding eminence and is surrounded by the stately forest trees of Oliver Park. It has all moderns improvements. Accommodations for July and August should be secured at once, as many have already bespoken rooms for those months. SUBSTANTIAL BUILDINGS Are being erected on all sides, fully 100 are already completed and nearly as many more are contracted for.
