A "Woman's Deep Grief for the Doath
of Her Favorite Daughter

Pottstiixe, Juno 16. Particulars of a
strange, desperate and successful suicide l)y
btarvatiou come from Weisliample, tuft,
county, the suicide being Mrs. Harriet
bmith, Mlio s-tarved herself to death on
account of tlto decease of her daughter,
ilrs. Daniel Mosor, ol Tower City. Many
miles away from the telegraph wires, and
Iwj-ond the reach of railroads, a remarkable
j-eene was enacted, the neighbors witnessing
u woman slowly taking her life. Week after
week they visited her chamber, only to find
that each day brought her nearer death's
door.
Mrs. Smith wa the wife of John Smith, a
man w ho for ur ard of 15 years had the
reputation of bcin. the wealthiest and mot
prominent farmer In the valley. Fifty-eight
days ago Sirs. Jloi-or, the eldest daughter of
the Smiths, took sick. She was her mother's
favorite, and, her illness gave tho family
much alarm. After four days of suffering
she died, and since then not a crumb has
passed Mrs. Smith's lips.
Slie Announces Her Determination.
At first the latter' grief did not assume a
violent form. She seemed to be very calm,
and with the rest of the relations she at
tended the funeral. As the coffin was being
low ered into the grave. Mr. Smith startled
the people around her by stating that she
-would, never eat another mouthful of food
on this earth. It was supposed that the
n oman had uttered the w ords under the im
mediate stres of grief, and no one believed
that she w ould keep her word.
After returning home Mrs, Smith assisted
the domestics in preparing dinner.and a hen
all the dishes had been placed on the table
she walked into the sitting room. The re
mainder of the family partook of the meal,
while 3Irs. Smith sat near tho window sob
bing. Every possible effort was made to in
duce hei to cat, but to no avail. She w as de
termined, and it was decided to leave her
alone w ith the hope that she would soon see
her loll. Supper came with the woman's
mind unchanged.
From that tune to the 50th day she went
to her room w henever the meals i ere pre
pared. Gradually her strength failed her
and she became a mere shadow of her former
self. Food was carried to her bed, but she
refused to touch it. Different schemes ar
ranged by the family and physicians, who
were called ill attendance, to have her eat
failed, and finally she refused to drink any
wnter. In the morning she would come dow n
stairs and help prepare breakfast, but the
fumes of the steaks and vegetables had no
effect upon her.
Kefuscd rood to the Very End.
On the .-0th day, w hile walking through tho
liall, he fell fainting upon the floor and was
removed to a couch in the front room. She
was entirely exhausted, and while lying on
her back more than 20 physicians from the
surrounding country flocked to the Smith
house, and after learning the truth pro
nounced it a marvelous case. While uncon
scious Jlrs. Smith" mouth was forced open
with the hope of forcing dow n some nourish
ment. As it was trickling along her tongue
she recovered and spat it out. Iler husband,
"who sat by her side waiting with others for
her death, asked hei for his sake to take a
little broth
"It's no ue, John," cried the prostrated
w oman; "I will refresh myself by looking at
my child's face in heaven?'
llurimr her Ions fast many attempts
w ere made to gii e the w oman nourishment,
but in such instances she came out victori
ous, managing in each instance to keep any
thing from reaching hei stomach. Finally
the end came, but not belore the ghastl3--looking
sufferer brushed off several drops of

everything without benefit. Then I said
let us try Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and

No health was ever maintained without
assistance. Health, like the body, must be
supported. Hut do not make a mistake and
do it foolishly.
Tho best wnv to sustain the health Is to as
sist it, to stimulate it. The best way to
healthily stimulate Is by the use of pure, un

hava declared this, scientists have confirmed
it, and both have insisted that Dniry's Pure

one in the markjt. Indeed, it has become,
as it deserves, a household necessity.
