SQUELCHING THE SMOKE.
Anothcr.Boorn for the ladles' Health Pro
teeth e Association A Significant let
ter Trom Chicago The Smoke Consum
ers Now at IVork in Tills City.
The Ladles' Health Protective Association
lias received another boom for the -work In
abating the snioko nuisance In Pittsburg.
The tollowlng letter of Inquiry sent to Chi
cago by Mrs. John JL Oakley, the Secretary
of the association, has been answered by
Charles 1L George, Chief Inspector of the
Department of Health of the Windy City.
He kits not a single manufacturer has
left Chicago on account of the enforcement
of the smoke consumer ordinance. Tho
ladles hero have left the matter of the pus
eageof an ordinance regulating the nuisance
entirely in the hands of Collector Warm
castle, and will not take any further action
until Councils have acted on the ordinance,
which will be modeled after that now in
force In Chicago.
Further than this tho ladies will make ar
rangements to have all the manufacturers
of smoke consumers give an exhibition of
their appliances at the Exposition this fall.
In addition Mrs. Oakley will write to all the
members of the Smoke Committee of the
Citizens' Committee of Chicago, Kansas City
and other Western cities where smoke con
sumers nro used, in order to furnish data on
the subject to lay before Councils.
The next meeting of the association will
"be held on Tuesday, at the Pittsburg Li
brary, when the following letter from Chi
cago will be read:

Protective Association:

tempUUng the abatement of the smoke nuisance In
vourcltv. Unclose yon a copv of our smoke ordi
nance, "hlch is the best law that we
know of on this subject, having been tustalned
hv the Supreme Court of Illinois, and with a
rffrid enforcement of the same, the smoke nuis
ance can be entlreh abated. Ae are dally bring
ing prosecutions against the Tiolatorssand have the
heartv co-operation of the best citizens of Chi
cago, toircther with the officials of the various
roads that enter this cltv, and we have yet to hear
of any Important manufacturer moving from Chi
cago on account of the enforcement of the smoke
ordinance, as ite have clearly demonstrated that
Jt Is no hardship to stop the smoke; but, on the
other hand, is a stroke or economy.
As to the various deTlces In use, it would bs
tetter to tend an expert here to become thoroughly
posted on the subject. RespeclfuUy yours,
CHaS. II. Geobge. Chler Inspector.
Kcgardmg the statement made by Chief
Brown that the expense of putting in smoke
consumers wouldbo hardto uearbvMnall es
tablishments, Mrs. Imogen B. Oakley, Secre
tary of the association, esterday said: "The
truth of the matter is that smoke consumers,
or automatic feeders, as they should be
called, are the most economical devices ever
"brought before the public, and small
establishments, doing business on a limited
capitnl, should be the very ones to adopt
them with enthusiasm. The Health Asso
ciation lias received reports from firms using
emoke consumers, both In this city and in
Chicago, and in every case it has been shown
that the first cost of the consumer can be
liaid in one ortnoj ears solely by tho saving
in fuel. The following firms have been re
ported to the association as having made
contracts for smoke consumers solely on the
ground of ccomraiy: Hamilton building,
Dewce-s Wood & Co., Franklin school build
ii.g, Oliver Iron and Steel Company, Roberts
Wire Mill. Maishall, Kenncdy&Co., Jackson
"building.
"Wen ill not,"' continued Mr. Oakley, "do
any more regarding the chimneys that send
out Mnokc until Councils have acted on the
new ordinance. Collector Warmcastle will
look after the matter in Pittsburg, and to
night President Parke will introduce a sim
ilar ordinance in Allegheny Councils."
