SHAKY HOUSES SACKED
During the Absence of Their Owners
From Tarentnm Campground.
SOME UNPLEASANT DISCOVERIES.
The Fair Grounds Also Rolled of Furniture
and Other Movables.
BTEPS TO DISCOVER THE GUILTT (LVES
Pittsburg and Allegheny people who ore
Just now moving up to the Tarentum Camp
meeting Grounds for their usual sojourn
there are every day making fresh disco eries
of depradations made by burglars during the
past winter. The city people who reside
there during the heated term usually lea e
their cottages furnished throughout sons
to avoid transporting their goods 23 miles
to the city and back each 3 ear. During the
winter the JO or 40 cottages in the woods
were broken into and more or les taken
from each one of them. In the aggregate
two or three wagon loads of goods have been
hauled out of the grove. The robbers hardly
dired opera tein daytime lct they should bo
6een by the Janitor, and bits of candles lying
about or lamps indicate they mado their
visits far into tho night. The grounds are
two and a half miles away from the to wn of
Tarentum, and on account of this isolation
are peculiarly expoed. One man who
lived in the neighborhood reports that on
one occasion ho saw a two-horso w agon full
of household goods driven out of tho camp
ground lane, and that when he hailed the
driver from adistanco the fellow whipped
up his horses and disappeared down a ravine.
Funny Features of the Disco cries.
Many ludicrous features occur in the dis
co cry of the robberies. One family from
Allegheny w cnt out three weeks ago to stay
only for a week to clean up their cottage for
rental. The women had left their working
dresses In tho cottage, so they only brought
street costumes with them. They had left
four beds, last fall, well supplied with com
forts, and blanket, and of course bothered
about none of those things. But when they
cot out in tho woods, late in the evening,
thev found all their dresses gone, every
stitch of bed clothing missing, bed-ticks
ripped open and not a dish left. They had
nothing to wear, nothing to cook or eat with
or nothing to sleep on. Their predicament
was most unpleasant. To make matters
worse, that verj night the Pittsburg Storage
Company's warehouse on Seventh street
burned, and all their household goods of the
lacated citv home were completely de
stroyed. They received the news in the
w oods next morning".
In several other cottages whole barrels of
dishes, glassware, etc., were taken. In one
cottage last week the owner found some of
his own china replaced with a stray dish or
two left there by mistake by the robbers
h ho liad carried it about from anothor cot
tage. It is evident that women also had
.something to do with the thieving, for a par
ticular liking was displayed for women's
dresses. In one cottage occupied by a Mt.
Washington family the walls of an up-stairs
apartment had been left lined with dresses.
Not a garment remains.
Bow the Robberies 'Were Committed.
The method of tho robbers was to cut
open the bed ticks in the cottages, empty
the straw on the floor, and tht nusethe ticks
as bags in which to carry out the plunder.
Cottagers are naturally very much cha
grined over the losses. The money loss is
not much, but the inconvenience is great.
Some wnll have to practically refurnish their
summer homes throughout, conveying the
goods up irom tne city, one gentleman wno
had been robbed twice before spent several
daj s last fall nailing up his cottage, and
when he crawled out of a hole in the roof,
he rejoiced in the belief that he had at last
got ahead of tho winter thieves, but this
spring he found his cottage one of the worst
ol the victimized. He declares he will do it
up next fall in a style that will defy even
crowbars to open. On the whole, there
were goods enough taken off Tarentum
Campground last winter to furnish quite a
little community of dwelling houses some
where In Western Pennsylvania.
The fair giounds of the Tarentum Agri
cultural Society, which were so successfully
opened onlv last summer, have also suffered
unmercifully at the hands of tho thieves.
Chairs, and all sorts of stuff havo been
carted off from these grounds. The fair
ground is only half a mile from the camp
zneeting grounds. The matter was brought
up at the annual meeting of the trustees
of the Tarentum Campmeetlng Ground on
Tuesday. E ery 'step will be taken to bring
the guilty parties to Justice and1 prevent a
recurrence of the degradations next winter.
Notwithstanding the robberies, the indica
tions are that a ery successful campmeet
lng will be held on the campground this
summer. The lot-holders, at their last meet
ing, fixed August IS as the date for the com
mencement of the religious services.
The Grounds to Be Open Sundays.
The encampment will last over two Sab
baths. A prolonged discussion occurred
over a proposition to repeat tho experiment
of last year and close the gates on Sabbath.
It was finally decided to throw open tho
gates on Sunday, making the services as
public as on any other day. However, tho
trustees, who met subsequently, passed a
resolution requesting the railroads not to
run excursion trains to the grounds on Sab
bith, and to charge a hitching fee for all
vehicles, except lot-holders, entering the
grounds on that day. On t-abbath and all
other days admittance w ill be free to per
sons entering on foot
This is the fortieth year of the camp
ground's age. A celebration of the anniver
sary will be held, nnd the trustees delegated
to a committee all the arrangements. Tho
old stage coach and the canal boat used to
bring Pittsburgere to this campmeetlng be
fore the railroad was built, and there are
quite a number living yet w ho attended the
first campmeetlng. It is hoped to have
theso per-ons present. Tarentum was the
original campmeetlng in the neighborhood
of Pittsburg
R S P JlcCall, of Tarentum, received a
vote of thanks from the trustees upon retir
ing from the Presidency. He desired to rest
from any official capacity with the grounds,
so tho following officers were elected for tho
ensuing venr L. E. Stoflel, of Pittsburg,
President; E. C. Gongh, of Pittsburg, Vice
President; Henry Eurich, of Kites station,
Secretarj and Treasurer: the Committee on
Grounds and the Indies' Association were
consolidated, and the beautiful grove will be
grcatlj improcd at their hands. Smoke is
alread ausing Irom the chimneys of many
of the cottages in the w oods.
AprETiTE is generally restored to deli
cate children by the use of Dr. D. Jayne's

rromlnent People Everywhere Asking
About Robert D. Smith.
The'oxcluslve publication in The Dispatch
of the story that Robert D Smith, a member
of the patrician order of the Society of tho
Cincinnati, w as nt the Poor Farm has caused
a flood of letter to pour Into the Depart
ment of Charities from memborsof the so
ciety all over the country. Ono is from
William X. Smith, a nephew of Robert D.
Smith. He was a member of the firm of
Hood, Bonbright & Co., and said Robert D.
Smith was tho grandson of Captain Samuel
Smith, of Revolutionary fame. He has been
missing for a number of years, and the
nephew wants him taken back to Philadel
phia. Mayor William Wayne, of Paolo, Pa., who
is a grandson of Mad Anthony Wayne and
also President of the 8ociety of tho Cin
cinnati of Pennsylvania, also wrote inquir
ing about Mr. Smith. Another letter was
recoived FroniTrancis M. Caldwell, of Phila
delphia, who is secretary of the society. He
says the organization will take caro of Rob
ert Smith for the res,t of his life. Yesterday
Isaac Craig, of Allegheny, also wrote and
while Mr. Eaton wa? reading that letter W.
H. Irwin, of Pittsburg, who also belongs to
this famous order called nnd secured a per
mit to visit the man. The only trouble now
feared is that there may be a fight between
the society and Mr. Smith's relatives for the
privilege of taking caro of him.
