This Ib Only One of Many Such Cases Which Have Occurred There. THE JIAX "WELL SKILLED AT THE WORK If Joseph "Wlttman had not been alone in his store on Monday afternoon some distinct clew to a series of robberies which havo been perpetrated in Sharpsburg recently would ha e been secured; also one of the thieve. "tVittman has a grocery store on a corner oppoalto St. Mary's Church. , About 2.30 o'clock on Monday he saw a man leaving the church in so suspicious a man ner as to convince him he must bo connected with the robberies which have occurred in the church from time to time during several years. His impulse was to follow and havo the man arrested, and he is now regretting" he did not. "I could not leave the store," ho said yes terday, "because somebody might have walked off with the goods." But his suspicions aroused ho ventured, nnjhow.-acroes to the church not 20 yards from his door and there ho found the con tribution box burst into and the contents Stolen. The padlock had been broken off and the iron door pried open, presumably with a screw driver which lay near. He Left Another Lock Behind. A Tale lock of a strong pattern -was also lying close by, presenting the appcaranco of having been forcibly removed from some where. This lock did not belong to anything in the church, and must have been left by the thief in his hurried flight when dis turbed. It was John Peitz, a well-known Sharpsburger, who inter fered with the thief's further spoliation of the church. Peitz said .that when he entered the church the stranger was making a pretense of examining the Stations of the Cross, and he left soon after Pcitz entered. He left a copy of a German morning dally of Monday's issue behind him, affording presumptive evidence of his nationality. This is the latest of many attempts made recently upon this -church and St. Joseph's. It was only last week that an Ineffectual at tempt w as made to hi eak open the other two of the three contribution boxes. They were so damaged that Joseph "Wittinan had them taken down. Three weeks ago Father Grace's boxes were tampered with in a simi lar manner, but no money was taken be causo there w asn't any there to steal. They Stole the Sacred Vessels. These robberies are in line with similar earlier occurrences. Two years ago, during Father Meyers time, tho tabernacle con taining the sacred vessels was broken into and several stolen, others of them being mutilated for their Jewels. Sinco then the altar -vessels have been retained in safer quarters. The manner in which tho thief removed the strong fastenings of the box, and the lock he had with him, gives the impression that he was used to the work, and affords grounds for the suspicion that he is indus triously engaged in that particular branch of robbery. How man v other places he may nave successiuuy worceu can oniy ue in ferred. DBAGGED BY THE FEET. Horrible Fosltion In "Which "Willie TVendel "Was Placed Yesterday. The propensity of small boys "to fool" with dangerous objects came near ending the life of Willie "Wendelj esterday morning. He and his playmates have been accustomed to amusing themselves by dropping a rope down on the Citizens" Traction cable on Pcnn avenue. At the upper end was ias teneda piece of wood, oldshoe or tin can. This -w ould skip along tho ground at the rate of, the cars and it afforded the boys great fun trying to stop it. Whileonhisway to school yesterday Willie and his companions were thus pursuing a rope and shoe. "Willie suc ceeded in stopping it, but to the horror of all he got his lect eutaugled and was soon being dragged over the rough pavement at a terrific rate. The lad's cries for help attracted the notice of the b3-standers, but they did not seem .able to help him except by running after' him and crying for assistance. , At Twentv-second street Captain Davis, of En pine Nb. 7, saw the boy andtook in the situa tion. Illuming alongside ho soon severed the rope with his knife, Removing young "Wcndel to the engine house he had his torn clothes removed and wounds washed and dressed. His back and shoulders were severely cut and torn. A Carload or Girls. A party of 35 young ladies going home from the Mt. Vernon Seminary at Washing ton occupied a car on the limited last even ling. They were in charge of E. Q. Cordner, traveling passenger agent for tho Pennsyl vania road. Talk of an Extension. It is now claimed that the Pennsylvania Company intends to extend its Ikiefrom Mansfield, O., to Martin's Ferry and "Wheel ing, and ultimately to the seaboard.
