AX OLD CASE OPENED.
Thomas O'nrien Claims Ho TTas Arrested
Through Splto "Work Charges Made
Against Clerk Leon Eong The Latter
Denies the Entire Story.
Thomas O'Brien is in jail for a crime of
which he was convicted four years ago. He
has remained in the city nearly all that
time unmolested. O'Brien was convicted of
running a disorderly house and was out on
5500 bail. He jumped his bond and was out
of the city for five months. He then re
turned and nothing was done until Wednes
day. O'Brien was seen in his cell yesterday
and had the following to say in regard to
his arrest:
"I have been told and am satisfied that
Lenny Long, of the Clerk of Court's office,
and Charley Stevens, the saloonkeeper, are
back of this. I have been back in Pitts
burg four years and have not been in the
linuor business since that time, and have
tried to live correctly. A few weeks agd
Charley Stevens, the Market street Jsaloon
keeper, made a brutal attack on my father,
who is 60 years old. He hit him on the
head with a revolver, and otherwise abused
him in such a manner that he is not over it
vet. My father made an information against
him, charging him with assault and battery.
He was importuned to withdraw the suit,
but refused. Xow Lonny Long and Stevens
are great friends, and I have it straight that
Long said he would fix me if the case was
not settled. He was in the Clerk of Courts'
office at the time, and had the record. I
think he has gone to Judge Ewing and told
him about me, and that caused my arrest.
I will say right here that I will rot in jail
before I w ill permit my father to withdraw
that suit."
Clerk Long declares that O'Brien's story
is false. "I .was out of town for two weeks
up to last Saturday," he said, "and since
my return have been playing at the Bijou
every night and'spend very little time at
the Court House. I don't een know
O'Brien. I am a friend of Stevens just as I
am of a hundred other people. I don't see
why my name should be connected with the
thing at all, as I was not in a position to do
it The matter came from the other court."
Charles Stevens was also asked whathe
had to say regarding the matter and he
promptly denied it. "It is true I had
trouble with O'Brien's father. He attacked
me on the street with a handy-billy and
knocked me down. He then entered an in
formation against me, charging assault and
battery. I have appealed the case to court."
CAKPENTEK will describe an old Mexi
can burial ground for THE DISPATCH to

of Aztec mummies and other interesting
features.
