    FROM POISON
formed by Decomposing Sturgeon in
the Victims' Stomachs.
PACTS BROUGHT OUT BY CHEMISTS
First Double Inquest Ever Held in Alle-"
ghenj- County.
G.-H. GLEDmLL PEESEXTS HIS CASE
The first double Inquest ever hold In Alle
gheny county -was conducted by Coroner
McDowell yesterday In the sturgeon
cases. Juries had been previously Im
paneled in the cases of Thomas Rourke, of
Center county, and Henry Broge, of Etna.
As both inquests rero dependent upon
the same testimony they were heard
together and 12 men Instead of occupied
the Jury box. No verdict has been reached
and the inquests were adjourned until Mon
day. So far the evidence goes to show that
death resulted rrom eating decomposing
eturgeon, w hich created an irritant poison,
but whether the responsibility can be flxed
Is as yet undecided.
James T. Eourke, son of the late Thomas
Itourke, testified that he and his father had
eaten smoked sturgeon bought from Mr.
GledhUl on May 18, and that night both had
been very sick. He recovered, but his father
died. Dr. Tracy, the family physician, de
clared it -was poisoning and that the patients
liad vomited and purged all night.
The Result of the Autopsy.
Dr. J. Guy McCandless said ho and Dr.
Tracy had held an autopsy. The stomach
&nd kidneys were found inflamed. The
Juan's death was due to exhaustion caused
by some sort of poisoning. The witness
knew Thomas Eourke to be a healthv man.
H, T. Knox, a reporter, testified to taking
three samples of sturgeon to Hunt & Clapp
for analysis and Captain A. E. Hunt testified
to having received them and turned them
over to James O. Handy, their head chemist,
for analysis.
James O. nandy testified that he made, an
nnah sis of the stomachs of Thomas Itourke
and Henrj Broyc. Tart or the stomach of
Mr. Rourke was much inflamed but there
was no e idence of arsenic or other metallic
Siisons The inner membrane was
flamed and the stomachs therefore
not in a healthy condition. The ex
terior and interior of the stomach of
Ilenrv Broge, were very much inflamed. The
stomach contained a dark greenish mass;
also a large quantity of bismuth. The wit
ness made an analysis of the same fish, and
in two of the pieces found a great deal of de
composition. The witness thought that if
the lisi- had been properly cured it w ould
not have docompoeu.
Coroner McDowell then produced some of
the smoked sturgeon, but when the package
was open it was found, alive with mag
gots. Dr. McCandless was recalled and testified
that after vomitingand purging there would
be no poisons remaining in the stomach, so
that the report of the chemist was what ho
thought it would be.
What an Analysis Has Prtned.
Dr. Johnson testified to having held tho
nutopsj on Henry Broge, and the chemical
analysis was as he etpected. He had given
the deceased bismuth to allay omitlng and
purging
Henry Bled, of Etna, testified that Mrs.
Broge was at his store on May 16. He had
eturgeon for sale, and purchased it from Mr.
Gledlnll's wagon on the 15th. He purchased
10 pounds of it at 10 cents per pound. The
w ltncss a few da s previons had purchased
live pounds from J. L. Wyland, paying 15
cents pel pound, bat this was used in his
own family. Some 13 or U people, to whom
he sold tho sturgeon bought from Mr. Gled
hill, became sick; among them was his own
eon.
George Farmerie, clerk for Mr. Bliel, testi
fied to selling Mrs. Broge half a pound of
sturgeon which was bought from GledhUTs
wagon.
Homer Terk, a driver for Mr. GlcdhiU, tes
to selling Mr. Bleil 20 pounds of sturgeon on
Frida, the 15th
John Snyder was employed by Mr. GledhUl
in smoking fish. Two weeks ago he smoked
four barrels of sturgeon. The fish were in
good condition when they were cured
and smoked. No chemicals were
used in the smoking. The witness
could not tell how long sturgeon would keep
if it was properly smoked.
James Lavned is Mr. Snyder's assistant.
Tho four barrels of fish smoked two weeks
ago were in first-class condition and had no
signs of decay.
John L. Gnbbin testified to furnishing
Prof. George Hay with three samples of
Btnrgcon for anals sis. These samples were
purchased in Sharpshurg anl Etna stores.
Prof. George Hay was called and testified
that the fish were in a state of decomposi
tion. now Iong Sturgeon Can Be Kept.
Frederick Smith, of ew York, is in the
fish business and handles sturgeon, both
fresh and salt water. The length of keep
ing of smoked sturgeon depends entirely on
the weather and will average from 4 to 12
days, sturgeon is often frozen, and in this
way will keep for two vears. Tho witness
has been in tho fish business nearly
nil his life and neor knew of any
disease among sturgeon andncr knew cr
heard of anv sturgeon poisoning before.
Meat and Milk Inspector McCuteheon said
he visited Mr. Gledhlll's smokehouse and all
the sturgeon there were in good condition.
G. H. Gledhill was next examined, tie
testified that on Slay 12 he had received four
barrels oi 6turgeon from Bayslde, N. J.
These foui barrels w cro sent direct to the
smokehouse. The witness did not examine
them and could not saj what condition they
r ere in. He had, how e er, rtcei ed a tele
gram from the shippeis stating that they
were in good condition This sturgeon cost
him 3 cents per pound and when express
ago was paid ana tho labor of smoking it
w ould cost about 8 cents per pound and ho
could readily afford to sell it at 10 cents. The
witness understood that some ten years ago
Just such trouble had occurred in this city
o er sturgeon poisoning.
Jlr. Gledlull added that the sturgeon
might havebeen diseased when caught Mr.
Smith was recalled, and stated that-thc fish
which caused the trouble may have been a
drowned sturgeon

Mayor Gourley Asks All Patriotic Citizens

The Fourth of July fund was only increased
by $180 yesterday. Mayor Gourley had ex

time. In speaking of it yesterday he said:
"I hope all patriotic citizens who favor an
-old time celebration and the education of
the rising generation in the patriotic
principles of which tho Fourth oi July is
commemorative will send in contributions
at once. If they cannot afford to contribute
liberally let them do as well as they can. A

SUBPBISED MAY0E G0TJBLEY.
Failure of the Charter Amendment Bather
Astonishing to Bis Honor.
When the news came to City Hall yester
day afternoon that the Legislature had ad
journed, the first question asked was
whether or not the charter bill had passed.
When it was learned that the bill had failed
the general opinion seemed to be that the
Mayor had gained a victory. His Honor,
however, was not particularly elated over
the matter. Ho had previously Expressed
himself as being satisfied with the act after
Senator Flinn amended It so as to take away
none of the powers of the Mayor.
"I was rather surprised," said the Mayor,
"as I expected the men who were pushing
the act 'would get it through. I cannot say
yet what I will do."
Mayor Gourley thinks Councils, in accord
ance with section 21 Of the city charter,
should designate just what power the Mayor
has over heads of departments. Whetherhe
will make an effort to seoure this action or
not is a question.
