VERT LIBERAL OFFERS FR03I THE "WEST The National Butchers' Association, now to session at Carnegie Hall, was very hand somely entertained yesterday afternoon at Herr's Island abattoir. Delegates to the number of 200 or more, with numerous friends, responded to the inritationofEir.il Winters, ancLfrom 2 to 5 o'clock Inspected the abattoir. Ample provision In shape of lunch and beer was spread for the visitors, end a season of good cheer was enjoyed. Delegates from the far 'West expressed great delight with their reception at Pittsburg. There are not less than IS delegates in at tendance at the convention from Texas. Austin, Ft.x"Worth and Dallas are repre sented, and all are cnthusinstio over what they have seen and heard in this city. After partaking of the generous lunch provided by Emil Winters, Mr. James, of St. Louis, ex Tresldent of the National Association, enter tained the large company with an address whioh was in evident accord with all pres ent, as it was ofton interrupted with signs of approval. Mr. James earnestly advocated the patronage of homo industries, and bore heavily on dressed beef men in the far "West, who. while furnishing large amounts of meat to this and other citleo, contributed little or nothing tor tho support of schools, churches, streets and the various institu tions of Pittsburg. He said: Dressed Beef Declared Unhealthy. "The purpose of the National Butchers' Association is to secure healthy meat to the consumer, which is an impossibility where dresed beef has to travel from Kansas City or Chicago to Eastern cities before it is put on tho stalls. The meat consumed shonld bo killed at home to insure a healthyarticle. And as to lard, why, there is any amount on the market hich never came from the hog, not even a bristle. I have been a member of the National Butchers' Association from its inauguration, six years ago, and Intend to stav with it as long as I live." Mr. James was at one time a drovea. He is a -first-class talker and has the courage of his convictions. Only one business session was held yester day by the association and that was taken tip in the discussion of a plan to work Bgainst the Big Four and other monopolies that affect the meat business. A. Gardner, of Dallas Tex., talkod on the subject of es tablishlrg abattoirs in Texas and supplying the butchers all over the country from them. He made a proposition that if the associa tion would appoint a committee to visit Texas ho would see that there was no ex pense. Mr. James offered a resolution in dorsing the idea. A Liberal Offer From Ft. 'Worth. General B. A. Campbell, a member of the Ft. Worth, Tex Chamber of Commerce, on behalf of that city, offered the associa tion the Ft. Worth stock yards covering 50 acres, having a capacity of 21,000 cattle per day and valued at $300,000. He offered the whole to the association, or offered to furnish land and give money to build a Slant. He said the city was ready to assist i establishing a market where they can se cure cattle at rates so much lower than now paid as to astonish the members of the asso ciation. After some discussion the resolution to appoint a committee to Tisit Texas and in vestigate the matter was adopted. The President decided not to make his appoint ments until to-day, so as to give him plenty of time to select good men. There will bo five members of the committee. The report .of tho Auditmg Committee showed a de ficiency in the treasury of $236 30, nnd the shortage will be made up by each local asso ciation being assessed $12 50. The insurance idea m as also under discus sion, and it w as finally decided to assess each member $1 in case of tho death of a member.
