THE -'mTSBURG DISPATCH, 'TUESDAY, MAT 19, 1891
JfOKE POISON BOuBD.
Scores of Pittsburg People "Who Ate
of the Smoked Sturgeon.
THEnYERE MADE DEATHLY SICK
2u Fatalities Have as Tet Been Reported by
the Fhvsicians.
THE ftSH K STOCK TO BE C0SDE3DJED
The number of cases of poisoning from
Binoked sturgeon greatly increased yester
day, and nearly all the physicians on the
H11 found patients suffering from the effects
of the poison. Dr. J. Guy McCandlcss made
a report to Chief Brown on this subject and
advised that officers bo sent to tho stores
and hare all the smoked sturgeon in stock
condemned. lie says ho finds that the fish
was cured with creosote and it has all the
appearance of an overdose. He reported
qnitca number of persons who were poi
soned and who camo under his direct super
vision. Chief Brown ordered Superintendent
Baker to visit all the places where the fish is
sold and condemn it He warns people to be
very careful for the present and abstain
from using tho meat. Dr. McCandless had 13
cases in three families j esterday and visited
numerous other patients. On Wylie avenue
the grocer from whom the sturgeon was se
cured said lie purchased it from Mr. Gled
hill. It seems that all tho poisoned fish
comes from this place, but that is not pecu
liar, inasmuch as his is the only curing es
tablishment in the city.
Anxious for an Im estimation.
Mr. Gledhill is anxious that the thing be
thoroughly investigated, as it is hurting his
business at present. "This lot of fish," said
lie, "is the finest I ever saw, and I can't un
derstand why it should have a bad effect on
so many people. We received it fresh from
D. r. Leonard, of Bay Side, X. J. It was
smoked Friday. We only use. hard wood,
hickory and sometimes oak. I deny the use
of ci eoote in curing it. I have heard of
that being done. The man who does my
work has had 40 years' experience, and is
certainly competent. These reports are
ruining niy busme-. If smoked sturgeon is
poisonous'l w ill quit the business."
"Dr. C. C Wiley made a statement yester
day w hicli somewhat explains tho creosote
storv wituout reflectinjr on Mr. Gledhill. He
says hickory contains a great deal of creo
sote, and tliat mav have caused the trouble,
a that was the wood used in curing this
meat. Creoote in small quantities, the
doctor rat s, is a sedative, but in large quan
tities it is poisonous. Creosote is a distilla
tion of w oo-l tar, and it is the acid in the
wood that cures the meat. The probabilities
are that the meat absorbed too much of tho
acid from the smoke.
Progress of the Poison Patients.
At Sharpsburgthe majority of the patients
arc getting along first rate, though seme of
them arc reported no better, and one or two
whose names could not be learned may die.
The doctors there report that there are only
a few new cases, and they arc not serious.
There are numerous caesin theLawrencj
ville district. Dr. Henon reports one family
in -which several members were sick, and
had evidently been poisoned by something
taken as food.
There are a large number of cases on lit.
Washington, also. Dr. McCormick is attend
ing a family there, the members of which
were poisoned, and lie is slightly doubtful
as to their ultimate recover-, It is in the
Seventeenth and Eighteenth wards where
the greatest number of case? are reported.
Nearly all tho doctors in that vicinity have
several patients under their care, ana some
of them aro verv sick. The poison trouble
even invaded O'llara township, where the
Boyer family tasted of the spoiled fish and
became sick.
There are a large number of people who ate
of the fish and were not poloued. One grocer
said he sold 50 pounds without having any
complaints. Mr. Gledhill said he ate some
of tlie fish and gave some to his friends,
and none of them were affected badly.
ANOTHEBTyAIT ON WESTINGHOTJSE.
The Meeting Adjourned Yesterday,
and
Will Try It Again June 1.
Tho adjourned meeting of the Westing
house stockholders yesterday was like the
soul of wit, tho opening, speech-making
and adjourning it all occupying but 4
minutes and 45 seconds, though a clerk after
adjournment detained the stockholders to
pet a census of their holdings. There were
out about one-third as many present as at
the meeting on the 4th inst., and they didn't
appear to have any views to offer. Mr.
Westinghouse, on taking the chair, an
nounced that they were not ready to do any
thing and must adjourn until the Reorgani
zation Committee had secured the lequislto
amount of stock upon which the
Mercantile Trust Company of New York
could work. Ho also stated that
the circular issued (which was published in
The Dispatch of Mav 10), gave ail the infor
mation necessary. 'hen a sufficient amount
of stock is surrendered under the plan, a
special meeting will be called to ratify it.
He hoped all w ould be readv by June 1, and
asked an adjournment to that date. Tho
motion was made and passed without de
bate or questions asked.
Jlr. Westinghouse stated that 50,000 shares
had been surrendered, and he hadn't any
doubt about the succes of the arrangement,
and said he felt that stockholders would be
ultimately agreeably surprised bevond their
most sanguine expectations. It was stated
thatiftiMiflicient amount of stock is not
surrendered by the date of next meeting a
further adjournment will be necessary.
June 1 is the date for the election of direct
ors. One reason for delay is that some of
the stockholders are in the far West and a
number of others are in Europe, and cannot
be reached at once.
O'Neill Got Enough.
George O'Neill, who hid in tho hold of tho
Manitoba in coming from Scotland, reached
here yesterday. Ho was discovered when
the ship was lour davs out, and then he was
delirious from hunger and thirst. He is
still very w cak and said he would lather
pay his fare 20 times over than undergo
such an experience again. His brother is a
puddler in a Second avenue mill.
Such Is Fame.
Fanny Davenport registered twice at the
Hotel Duquesne yesterday, ller name ap
pears first as Mrs. McDowell, and then,
learing nobody would know her, she wrote
her stage name on the next line.

,0NE DAY IN THE COURTS.
A Preliminary Injunction Granted Against
the "White Electric Traction Company
Supervisors Object to T Kails Criminal
Court Ends Minor Court Notes.
W. B. Baft and J. R. Wyli yesterday filed
a bill in equity against the White Electric
Traction Company. The bill asked for an
injunction to restrain the Traction Company
from using a T rail in the construction of
their line along tho public highway from the
north end of tho right of -way of the McKces
port and Duquesne Bridge Company to Oliver
station in Mifflin township, or from using
any kind of a rail except that agreed upon
by the supervisors of Mifflin township and
the Traction Company. It was also asked to
restrain them from laying a roadbed be
tween the points named, except such as will
at all seasons of the year permit tho travel
ing public to traverse said highway with
ease and safety.
The claim is made that the company vio
lated its agreement with the road supervis
ors in using T rails, and that the roadbed is
being constructed in such a manner as would
prevent the driving of wagons along it.
Judge Ewing granted a preliminary injunc
tion until further order of court.
Closing Up Criminal Court Work.
Jury trials for tlie present term of court
ended yesterday in the criminal branch.
Andrew Guenther pleaded guilty to illegal

of John Englert, charged with illegal liquor
selling in Baldwin township.

day for the defendants. The suit was brought
by Byers to recover damases for the death
of his son. The bovwas employed by the
defendants, and while he was in an out
house a jot of escaping steam was turned
into tho vault beneath. The boy was fatally
scalded before he could escape.
Three Defaulting Jurors.
Judge Ewing yesterday issued attach
ments to bring into court three defaulting
Jurors. They were John S. Slagle, of Alle
