THEY USED THE HIND LEG OF A DOG His Limb Has Knitted Perfectl and His Ankle Works Freely. KEPT SEVENTEEN WEEKS IN PLASTEE The authorities of Mercy Hospital are happy over a successful bone grafting ex periment. The happiest one, though, ia Samuel Itedin, the 9-year-old boy on whom the operation was made over four months ago. The bay's leg was crafted with the bone from the hind lee of a dog. His lee is now declared perfect, bat be still wears a leather brace to keep the limb straight. In a week be will be as strong as erer. The accident which caused the operation occurred jnst as the Red In family wan leaving Europe. I he limb was dressed there but in tlia ocean vojage it was neglected. Dr. Buchanan was called in six wrcLs after the arrival here and di-covcrod the bone was dead. Bo wanted to amputate the member. The father objected and hence the experiment was made. The operation was performed bv 1'rs. Buchanan. Hardtmeyer. Hobiion. McMancs. Merer and Leslie. The bo's lee has been kept In plaster pans for 17 week. Lat Friday morning Dr. Buchanan ordered the cast re moved. TUe boy was then told to stand on the lcc. He at onco walked several steps. Ue conld also work his ankle joint fairly. He was tent back to bed. but bis nurse bad only left the room when he crossed the floor and en gaged in a quarrel Mith another lad. a patient in the same ward, about a lead pencil. The leg nas almost entirely healed with the exception of a email portion, which will be all right in the conrse of a week.
