The attendance at the License Court has
fallen oil noticeably of late. Bat a few days
are Ictt before the first of May arrives, ana
while the judges are working hard, progress
is slow and the hearings arc not remarkable
for interest.
Judge Magee spent some time yesterday
approving the bonds of the applicants in
the townships and boroughs. His Honor
failed 10 approve the lollowiiig bonds:
George livers, It. P.Evans, John Gallagher,
Gottlieb Leisyer, A. Dugan and Michael
Jlaloney, oi Homestead; A. It. Adams and
M. H. Trapnor, of Braddock; Elizabeth
l'allert, Knoxvillc; Kate Sullivan, "Wil
nierding; Michael Uausmer and A. C.
Keppler, Harrison township, and Thomas
Bain, of Mifflin township.
Judces AVhitc and Magee yesterday ap
proved the bill of A. Y. Lee for 5456 for
plans of each ward and specifications of
each applicant's house. In indorsing the
bill the Judges stated that the information
given was of value to the Court.

Anderson to Captain McKinnic on account
of the recent deatb of Mr. Bean.

defective petition. Felix Tschudy, 2201
2203 Liberty street, did S70.0O0 worth of business
lastjear. W. L. Beck, 4J2 Thirty-third street,
is a druggist and would like a wholesale attach
'meiit. Charles LarKin, 3119 Millwood avenue,
told 12.000 worth of goods last year. George
Scott, 315 Thirty-third street, is a new man. E.
A. Becker, 195 Forbes street, had a license and
did a big jug business. John A. Cella, 3787
Fittb avenue, did not sell any single bottles.
11. Diebold, 3SIG Fifth avenue, gave his receipt--
as Slk,VUU Christine Habn. 1326 Second
avenue, was refused last year. Anthony
O'DonnelU 723 Second avenue, was also
refused last jear. Stephen bweeney,
533 Forbes street, reported his sales
asHG.OOQ. GottlebBrose. 31D5 Butler street,
gave his business, as 20.000. Joseph Fuhrer i
lions, Thirtj-seventh aud Butler streets, gave
their sales as 45,000. Owen McCusker. 3223
1'enn avenue, was refused a retail license and
w as jumped on for trying to deceive the Court.
Barset Rosenthal and Morris Ackcrman got
through easy.
Henry Fuchs. 1535 Butler street, admitted to
selling a. few eighths, and denied most vigor
ously that there was any drinking on the
premises, even going so faV as to say that he
wouldn't allow the drinking of water on the
premises. The applicant has about $5,000 worth
of stock on hand. Charles Iiook, 1JU2 Butler
street, reported his sales during the year at
18,090. This applicant did not handle beer, his
mam trade being wine and whisky.
He Asked Xo Questions.
Michael C Kane. Forty-eighth and Hatfield
streets, stated that bis last year's sales were
Mtf,000, of which 25,000 was from beer. The
applicant stated that he never made any in
quiries about bis customers, or where they
lived. The applicant has been in the business
for S9 years. August F. Miller, 4115 and 1117
Penn aAenne. did 14.000 worth ol business last
3 ear. 6.000 of which was from beer.
Peter Miller, corner of Gallatin and Bntler
streets, was the first Eighteenth ward appli
cant. He has been refused a license for three
"cars in succession. James Newell, Jr., 5302
Bntler street, did 15.000 worth of business last
e.ir, GO per cent, ot which was from beer. Leo
pold Kies, 5159 Butler street, is a new applicant.
The house was also applied for by a man named
Ingram for a retail license. The double appli
cation was an agreement between the two men.
Daniel Sweeney, 5410 Butler street, reported his
sales as 13.000. of which 10.000 was for beer.
Lewis Crist, 67 Frankstown avenue, was re
fused las: year. The applicant? stated that he
worked for a man named Lobeyde who had a
w bolesalc license. To Mr. Christy the appli
cant stated rhat he paid lor LoheydVs license
and the arrangements were that he would get
one-half the profits.
Joseph W. Einstein, 103 Frankstown avenue,
did business to the amout of 21000 last year.
The applicant aid not do a jug business, and he
supplies about 120 East End families with beer.
Mr. Christy Do you know John Mosser, Eli
Nnrmecut and Alex. McCall?
Mr. Einstein Yes, sir; I know them.
Mr. Christ Well, they drink some on your
premises?
Mr. Einstein Yes, I give them a drink, but
they never paid for any.
A Painter Wants a. License.
Lewis A. Kelly, 4928 Penn avenue, is a painter
and never had a license. Adolpb Lobeyde. 73
FrankstonnaTenoe, guessed that his business
last year amounted to from 14,000 to 16,000.
Lewis Christ attended to the business for him
and lie quit and took the bos with him. The
applicant prosecuted Christ for taking whisky
from the store. The Court grew very angry at
the applicant for the alleged evasions of ques
tions and Judge White remarked that Mr.
Lohesde'sconddctwas enough to defeat his
license. .Marten Bros., tula penn avenue, aro
druggists and tbev sold about 3,000 worth of
liquor last year. James Morcland, C205Pcnn
avenue, died in March last and his widow was
heard. Their business last year amounted to
25. Of, of which 5,000 was for beer. Mr.
Chris.y called attention to the fact that by Mr.
Mori-land's will his wile simply bad a doner in
tercst in the property and the other heirs ob
jected to the granllug of a license.
Laurence Barckhoff. 235 Frankstown avenue,
was the only Twentj-first ward applicant and
has hr.tl a wholesale and bottling license. His
sales last year were $10,000.
Judge White I have always been hostile to
granting any man two licenses for the reason
that it'.- monopolizing and confusing.
Attorney McCocik The fault h.is not been
ours. We bae taken out botb in order to try
and comply with the law and we have given
the Commonwealth the benefit of the doubt by
pacing for both.
Judge White I can't tell on which one to
examine him on
Altornej McCook We are satisfied to, allow
the Court to decide which one to grant him,
that is if a bottler can bottle whisky.
Judge Whits Well. I am not satisfied on
that point; I will not lay down the definition of
what a bottler can bottle.
Defining a ItotMer's Privilege.
Mr. McCook If Your Honor gives him a
bottlei's license, then my instruction to him
w ill be to bottle everything. My interpretation
of the law is that a bottler can bottle every,
thing.
Judge White Wc will let this case go over
until to-morrow morning and decide then.

Judge Ewing yesterday granted the pre
liminary injunction asked for by Fred Gwinncr
and others against the Federal Street and
rieasant Valley Passenger Railway Company
and the Allegheny Street Hallway Company,
restraining the defendants from constructing,
on California avennc, between Superior and
Island avennes. astreetrailwaynslngTrails, or
constructed in such manner that the rails shall
bo above the actual grade of the remainder of
the street, or using any rail hut thatanthorized
bv the ordinance granting the Observatory
Hill Hail way a rightof wayover California ave
nue. This order permits the company to lay T rails
on Calilorrla avenue, from Superior avenue to
the city line, whero the road is 10 cros Jack's
Hun on a bridge to go to Bellevuc. Tbe com.
pany agreed in court to lay oak planks on each
side of the rails that would enable vehicles to
be used on tbe tracks.
Ashing Mr. rflanm Into Conrt.
A petition was filed yesterday by the Mc
Kcesuort Light Company asking for a man
damus to compel Magnus 1'flaum. formerly a
director and solicitor of the company, to turn
over to the company some deeds to property
belonging lo the company, alleged to have
been given to Pfianm, when acting as solicitor,
and which he has since refused to return to
the company or give to the Recorder tp be re
corded. A rule was issued on Pflaum to com
pel him to show cause why ihe mandamus
should not be Issued. May 9 was fixed for a
hearing.
Suit Over Silver Lako Grove.
Tbe suit of J. M. Echoonmaker against George
Toerge, Fred Toerge and William Guenther Is
on trial before Judge Collier. It is an action to
recover a btlancc claimed to be due for money
advanced to the defendants. Colonel Sehoon
maker, it is stated, advanced tbe defendants
money to build the pavilon at Silver Lake
grove. It was afterward sold, and the snit was
brought to recover the difference between the
price it sold for and the amonnt advanced to
the defendants.

against H. Kleberdc Bros, an action on a sale.
Cixabi.es J. Gibson yesterday sned for a
divorce from Allie li. Gibson, alleging deser
tion. A XON-SUIT was taken by the plaintiffs yes
terday in the ejectment suit ot William McCoy
and wife against W. Fmton and others.
The petition of Michael Day, charged with
violating revenue laws, to have witnesses for
the defense summoned at the expenses ot the
uovernmcut, was grauted.
In the United States Court yesterday an or
der was made to bring M. Katellus, a prisoner
in tbe Northumberland County Jail, to Pitts
burg, to testify in a case at the next term of
court.
Tbe will of the late A. J. Rankin was filed
yesterday for probate. He bequeathes his en
tire estate to bis wife during life. At her
death it goes to his mother, and, if she Is dead,
to his brothers and sisters.
The case of J. M. Stodart & Co. against
Frank AVoog is on trial before J udge Stowe.
Tbe suit is to compel Woog to pay for a set of
books he was alleged to have ordered and re
fused to take when delivered.
In the suits of William H. Thompson and
Alex Carson against R. M. Gnlick & Co. for
damages for having Deen ejected from the
Bijou Theater, a verdict was given yesterday
for 6 cents damages for each of the plaintiffs.

suit against T. M. Latimer to recover 3,000
rent claimed to be due for tbe stores at 133 aud
140 Federal street and 45 and 40 South Dia
mond street, Allegheny.
Ik the suit of McWhinneyAt Co. against Mil
ler & McConnell, an action on notes, a verdict
was given yesterday for $555 S3 for the plain
tiffs. In a similar suit of the Hildreth Varnish
Company against the same defendants, a ver
dict was given for $353 78 f of the plaintiffs.
Judge Stowe yesterday tooK the papers in
the matter of tbe application for a receiver for
the firm of Cavitt, Jones it Co., and reserved
bis decision. The application was made by
Mr. Cavitt, who claimed that he was refused
admittance to the books, and that the concern
was insolvent.
Fhaxk Hexxikgs. yesterday, entered suit
against the Borongh of Bellevue for damages
for injuries to bis daughter Eleanor Hennings,
who was severely hurt, it was stated, by falling
through an unprotected opening in a board
walk: 10,000 damages are asked for the
daughter aud 2,500 for the father.
The suit of Mrs. Caroline Davis against
Felix McKnight, the Second avenue saloon
keeper, bis wife and James and Peter Quinn,
is on trial before Judge Ewing. Mrs. Davis
asserts that the defendants aro responsible fur
her husband's death for selling bini liquor, un
der the influence of which he fell into a run
and was drowned.

President Hall, of the Missouri Farmers'
Alliance, is opposed to the holding of tbe pro
posed third party convention in Cincinnati.
The .New York State Board of Arbitration,
in a report to tho Legislature, recommends the
enactment of a law to break up the "sweating"
system.
Binding wire and a butcher knife were used
by Mrs. Amelia Barnes at Fort Smith. Ark., to
commit suicide. Her husband had robbed and
deserted her.

resigned, wbich badly cripples the postal serv
ice on that road. .
It is rumored, but not credited, that a man
who committed suicide in Wimbledon, England,
some tbrcn weeks ago has beeu identified as
