CHICAGO The hlstpry of the wheM market to-day Is written in three movements, an ad vance at tho opening, a subsequent decline, and then a reaction which left the market firm at highest prices otthe day, and Ha higher for July than the clcfslng figures on Saturday. May closed K higher. The early cables, except from Paris, were weaker, but the trado here seemed satisfied with the break In prieei ex perienced last week, and Inclined toward an ad vance. July opened at $106X0106, andun drr ood buying by the bears quickly advanced to a 07. 3 he boldirgs of the country longs were forced on tho marcet and values broke sharply and July dropped to SI 05Jf. This break was ftistr.ri hr th, liber&l receipts in the North west, tho fine weather and the Increase in the visible supply. Then a rally began, which car ried prices to the highest point of the day, and held tii-m there till the close, with July quoted at SI 07J This rally was due to purchases to cover snorts by the bear syndicate and pur chases evidently for investment by the old-time bull leaders. Cornwasdull during the most of the session. Hfavy advance and the fine weather convinced holders that prices were too high, and, as the shorts were pretty well out of the deal, the market founl no support. From 63f S61cfor July at the opening the price slid oft to 61. Then when wheat took a sharp up turn there was a reaction, which lifted the price te 633-6 at the close. Oaf were the w eakest of the grams. Starting at 47).fi47c for July, stop loss orders were en countered all the way down to 44Jc from which point, in sympathy with wheat and corn, there was a rally to 4bc, Tho provision mar ket opened heavv and weak under receipts of 27,000 hogs. The weaknoss in cereals also tended to weaken holders. There was fair buy ing bv local shorts when the moderate break led to a recovery, which left prices somewhat bicber than they left off on Saturday. Manchester Traction was wanted at 32, an advance. Its friends claim that it will be the next of the street railway group to surprise the natives. Pittsburg Traction closed apoiutabeveand Pleasant Valley a fraction below the opening. Central wasa trifle strong er. Second Avenue finished half a point off. New Yokk, April 27. The stock market to day felt the influence of realizing sales even more than the last few days of last week, hut the demand which has sprung up from outside sources was a great sustaining element In the speculation and enabled the list to successfully resist not only the realizations but also the ef forts of the reactionists to bring about a mate rially lower range of values and the Influence of the further engagements of gold for export. The bank statement of Saturday clearlysbowed that currency is again flowing rapidly to this point from all directions and enabled the banks to increase their reserve, notwithstanding the drain from the shipments of specie abroad. The smaller class of operators are the dis turbing element at present, being prono to ac cept profits whenever they see them. Th8 strong points in the market to-day were first, the Villard, the Wheeling and Lake Erles, New England and, some ot the specialties, but the resistance to the pressure was so stubborn in the general light that only small fractions were lost in the active shares, aud considerable irrecularity was shown in the final change. The result of the pressure was, however, to re strict business after tho first decline on real izing sales by the bulls. Outside of the manip ulations of the balls and bears, the confidence! of investors is based upon the condition of rail, road earnings, the absence of any serions ele ment in the way of harmony among the roads and the favorable crop outlook. There was during the day active buying of Missouri Pacific Louisville, New Albany and Cbfcago, the Wheeling and Lake Eries, Wa bash, Union Pacific and St Paul. The pressure to sell was again felt in Ho dnal dealings, and .the grangers were weaker as haviug had the greatest rise, and in some cases prices reached as high as 1 per cent losses. The VUlards were the strongest points, but the reaction flnallv reached everything on the list. The market closed active and weak at the lowest prioes, but with hopefulness for the immediate future. The final losses of note Include Sugar, 2; North western, l Chicago (Jas, 1; Burlington, li Wabash preferred. 1, and Atchison, St, Paul, Louisville and Union Pacific each 1 per cent. Railroad bonds were moderately active, the trading reacuing $1,041,000. but- there was no sympathy with the movements in shares, and a flrm tone marked the trading in general. The fiqal changes, however, are Insignificant, and the business done was widely distributed with out developing any marked feature of interest. Cleveland and Canton first were very strong, rising 4 per cent to 92. Government bonds have beon dull and-easier. State bonds havo been dull and steady.
