THE PITTSBURG- DISPATCH IFRIDAY. APRIL 24, 189L
LIKEA.N EARTHQUAKE
Borne Shaken to Its Foundations by a
Gunpowder Explosion.
THE FAHOUS VATICAN DAMAGED.
Many Euildlncs Completely- Demolished
With Loss of Life.
FEiXTIC PEOPLE PEAI IN THE STREET
Boue, April 23. This city was shaken to
Iti foundations about 7 o'clock (Mi raorn
Ids by & terrific explosion.
The people rnsaed from their hornet into
the streets, houses rocked, pictures fell from
the trails, thousands of panes of glass were
broken, crockery was shattered, furmtnre
overturned, chimneys crashed down on the
:foofs, and in some instances toppled over
into the streets. The cupola of tbe House
Af Parliament, immediately after the explo
sion, shook violently and then
collapsed with a crash, which added still
-further to the feeling of horror.
All the thoroughfares were strewn with
bricks, stones, timbers and other debris
hurled there by the force of the powerful
concussion. In tbe houses doors, windows
and cupboards were burst open. Bents and
cracks appeared in the walls, plaster tell
from the ceilings and general desolation
prevailed.
JIUtaken for an Earthquake.
The ceneral opinion that prevailed was
that Borne had been visited by an earth
quake shock, and that a second shock might
reduce the city to ruins. Many fell upon
their knees and prayed aloud. Finally it
was discovered that the immense powder
magazine at PozzePantaleo, lour kilometers
from here, had exploded, and that it had
caused enormous damage to the neighboring
fort, which was filled with soldiers. The
reports of the affair which have reached here
add that, happily, the officer in command of
the fort heard a rumbling sonnd previous to
the final explosion, and, hastily ordering the
soldiers to leave tbe fort, he succeeded in
averting a terrible disaster. As it was, five
peasants, who were in the vicinity of tbescene
of the explosion, were killed outright, and a
cumber of others were more or less injured.
King Humbert and his military staff, accom
panied by the .Marquis i)i Rudlni and all the
members of the Italian Cabinet, have left the
city for the scene of tho disaster.
Many Buildings Damaged and Demolished.
All the houses uithin a radins of a kilometer
of the scene of the explosion are seriously
damaged. Two officers nere dangerously in
jured, and fully 120 civilians have been taken
to the different hospitals, suffering from in
juries caused by the explosion. King Hum
bert, who was heartily cheered whenever his
presence became known to the popnlaceand
soldiery, cave his own carriage to convey
wounded people to the hospital.
Tbe thock did not spare the Vatican. That
venerated pile shook Kith the rest of the build
ings when the force of the explosion was felt,
and sevral of the faraon historical stained
glass windows of the old buildings were shat
tered. The windows of the ancient Raphael
chambers, and the stained glass in the royal
Maircase, presented to Pope Pius IX. by the
K.n; of Havana, were also seriously injured.
1 he full amount of damage is not known.
Porty small houses have been reduced to heaps
if ruins by the shock. Tbe magazine con
tained ISO tons of powder. The cause of the ex
plosion is unknown.

The Standard's Powerful Rival In Ohio
SIcCnrdy's Xew Gusher Decreasing The
Old I'.utler Field Sow in the Shade.
The field situation is marked to-day by a
Etate of lethargy. The festive operator is
beginning to hunt for available territory to
drill, and it now looks as if they will be a
good while finding it Beports from
"Wildwood to-night are not very encour
aging tor an extension on the southwest
line, while the same may be said of almost
every section. There is. however, a ripple of
excitement and some interest manifested in a
ultlcat venture three-quarters of a mile west
or NoblestOKn. Allegheny countv, and two
miles northeast from McDonald station, and
also five or six miles southwest of the JlcCurdy
Held. The well belongs to Galley Guffy, and
is on the Joseph JIathew farm. Wednesday
they tapped the Gordon sand and tbe bole
filled up 1.7(10 feet with oil. The well is still
drilling, and the result is awaited with no little
Interest.
Tno miles north of this well McFarland &
Co. are drilling between the Gordon and fifth
sands on tbe Gormley farm; this venture is also
a wildcat.
Wildwood Disappointed.
tSrZCIAL TrtEGBAM TO THE DISPATCH. 1
Vildwood, April 2& The Heidleberge
well, on tbe southwest line, so far is a sad dis
appointment, and tbe Indications to-night are
by no means encouraging. The well is 13 feet
in tho sand, with no improvement, and unless
its owners soon find better digging it wonld
seem that an extension of the great southwest
pool is at an end.
Evans, llandevllle fc Cc's No. 3 Marks is
through the fourth sand, but found nothing of
a very encouraemg nature. However.they will
shoot the well to-morrow in the third sand,
where they have some hopes of making a small
producer out of tbe venture. The tools have
been taken out of tbe Kohlbar well. The Peep.
bles well bs declined to three inches, which is
only onc-ha!f what the well did when first
struck.
The Standard's Biggest Rival.
FIXDI.AY An interesting contest is being
waged between the Standard and Manhattan
Oil Companies tor tho control of the Ohio oil
field. The Manhattan is the most powerful in
dependent company operating in the field, and
what makes tbe fight more bitter Is the fact that
the Manhattan is composed of the same men
who a year ago sold to tho Standard tbe Lima
Oil Company for 51,000.000, and then at once re
invested tbe money in new oil territory. The
Standard ha commenced celling Ohio oil tor
use as fuel at IS cents a barrel delivered.
In Tltusville. Pittsburg and other Pennsyl
vania cities, and in New York and New Eng
land, 20 cents is the rate made, although It had
heretofore been selling at CO to 75. The price
at tbe tanks here is 30 cents. Tbe Manhattan
and the other independent companies in tbe
field bere are beginning to feel the effects of
tbe cut seriously.
Old Butler to the Bear.
Buti.ee In no section of the old banner

Unless Butler should soon risf up in her old

she will be relegated to the rear. The 100-foot
Is fast declininc. and a month hence will show
a most wonderful decline in the production.
Tbe county is dotted over with small pools with
limited producers, which In tbe aggregate cose
more to produce tbe oil than is ever realized
out of tbe stuff.
Figures of Bakerstown's Production.
Bakeestowx The well on the W. J. Can
ninsr farm, owned by the Natural Gas Com
pany, and finished and reported dry some time
last January, has recently been shot and
cleaned out, and is now making 12 barrels a
day. In this pool there have been completed
six wells and one dry hole the present month,
witb a daily production of ISU barrels. At
present there are lour wells being drilled and
but two rigs up.
The Work at Little Creek.

belongs to the Forest Oil Company, and tbe
other is owned by Schlerel. No. 8 Cable, Pat

McCUEDT Patterson c Jones' No. 0, Mc

and In tbe next 24 hours It will unquestionably
show a still further decline. Tbe Fisher Oil
