Iron Stocks Are Low. While

the
STATE OF THE FOKEIGX METAL MARKET
"SPECIAL TSLEGKAM TO ini DISFATCK.1
- nw York, April 23. The condition ot
the iron and steel markets is reported as
follows by the Iron Age:
American pic Too market has been dull
during tho week under review. We print elso
where an fntero-lii.g report from a gentleman
high in authority in the iron trade ot this cit,
on the position of the Southern furnaces. This
report shows that the stocks aro Ion. As re
flecting the position of the most Important
producers in this section, we may state that the
Mock of the Thomas Iron Company, which was
ICVOlons on January 24, is now about 4.7(0
tons. Since the company mako about S.300
tons weekly, their present stock is equal to
less than ten days' product. Northern brands
are quoted at S171S for No. 1. $1616 00 for
No. J.-uidSl'il'H oOfor gray force. Son-hern
iron ells"at Jib 50gl7 25 for No. 1. J13 75(210 15
for No. 2 aud S14f14 oO for gra forge.
-jnege'cisen and Ferro Manganese The mar
ket continues lifeless on spiegcleisen and very
quiet on fcrro manganese, which is --elliiig in
Jobbing lo:i at $6lGl 50. The majority of
Dujersof ferro Dave not jot reconciled them
selves to the rie, and aro holdi--g oil for
everything Pevond immediate requiiements.
unlets ana Kods ery little nas oeen aone
In the East, large buyers being well rovred in
billets, wnich are quoted at 27 S0CJ27 73 at
Eastern makers' mills. Kods are dull at SJ9 at
tidewater. There is nothlne doing in foreign
material.
Steel rails During the past week the market
has been very quiet, no transactions of any
size bavins been closed by the Eastern mills.
The latter, however, are now in excellent
shape, so far as orders for the rear future are
concerned. Up to the first of this month three
mills, in -a nick we include the Cambria, bad
orders on tbeir books for about 250. 000 tons,
out of which they bad delivered np to that
time about &5.000. They have certainly taken
more orders this month" than they will deliver,
so that even if they tret no further -aIe in
April the, will enter May with from 175,000 to
200.000 tons of rails to tie rolled. Since the
greater part is for early delivery, the majority
of this group of mills are in very good shape
for the next tvo months. The two largo
Wetero concerns, Illinois and Carnegie, have
done so little work during the flrt-t quarter
hating delivered only about 00,000 tons up to
April 1 that they have a good deal bctore
them, in spite of their enormous capacity. It
is estimated that tho two entered this month
with about 225.000 tons of rails to roll. Of course,
the pressure lrom the roads of :he Northwest
for i rack material comes a little later. On tho
whole, therefore, the rail mills regard the near
f nture with verv little anxiety. Thev are firmlv
holding at S30 7531 00 at tidewater, and it is
pointed out that all of them hare a strong
interest in maintaining prices, since they havo
during the davs of anxiety and doubting
entered a considerable aggregate of work. aB
jet undelivered, with the understanding that
should a break occur the purchasers aro to get
the benefit of it.
Manufactured Iron and Steel During the
past two weeks contracts for a number of
buildings have been placed, which have been on
the tapis for a considerable period. These
orders are all secured for the leading Pittsburf
mill, the aggregate being about 4.000 tons ot
etiuctuml raatcn.lL Jt is estimated by good
authority that the tonnage of the work now on
the market, or soon to make its appearance,
aggregates about 12,000 tons. Some of the West
ern bar makers are declining orders for Slav,
delivered, on the ground that the strike of the
miners may stop their mills. We quote angle.

An Advance In Scotch and Cleveland War
lants Noted In London.
IKFECIAL TELEOHAK TO TTf niSPATCII.l
NFW TnK, April 23. The Iron Age thus re
ports the foreign metal markets: In London
there has been about 1-6 advance in prices of
(scotch warrants and 1-3 in Cleveland warrants
during the week, and the market shows better
form. Operations have not yet increased to
any remarkable extent, however, the advance
being due chiefly to the over-Bold state of the
market, and the difficulty experienced by oper
ators on the bear side in securing warrants to
coyer their short accounts. The bulk of
supply is well helu. A quantity of warrants
changed bands privately at prices much above,
present open quotations. Stocks in warrant
stores have undergone a further large increase.
Tuere are now 52 furnaces blowing in Scotland.
Cleveland advices note a better demand in that
section. Latest sales of warrants were at 41s
for Scotch. C9?39 Jd for Cleveland, and 4Ss 71
for hematite. Pig tin prices declined to fc87s
Cd for prompts, under the influence of reports
of a back down in tho bull speculation in Amer
ica. Both have since recovered a portion of the
loss, although trading lias been moderate.
Eastern smpments prove to be about the aver
age, and not as heavy as expected in tome
quarters.
Copper has averaged somewhat lower, nnder
the influence of a plentiful supply of warrants
and cheap sales of American matte. Recent
sales of furnace material include film tore Ann.

Wheat Gives Way at the Opening, But
Braces Up and Finishes With a Gain
Corn, Oats and Hog Products
Score material Advances.
CHICAGO When trading began on 'Change
this morning it looked as if the bears were
booked for another victorious campaign.
Cable advices were decidedly in their favor,
receipts were heavy and the weather was flae
for the growing crop. Accordingly tho bears
began selling wheat right and left at the open
ing, starting tho market JiffiKc lower than it
was at the close yesterday. Their determined
selling sent It off to a point &e below yes
terday's last figures within a few minutes.
Then they discovered that they had underesti
mated the strength of tho bulls, who snapped
up all of their offerings and called for more.
Price changes from that time on tended up
ward, with one or two important breaks. The
result was a net advance, of IJn. overyester
daj's last figures. The other cereals and hog
products were also strong and scored material
advances, in sympathy with wheat.
July wheat started at $1OS01O8X arid
broke to SI OS and then lifted to SI 09. Later
cables noting a further decline in Paris and
Liverpool brought July back to ?l 03 but buy
ing lifted it to $1 10. When it was announced
that the corner in April flour at Paris had col
lipped and that prices had declined, equal to
$1 $3 bill. July sold fT to 51 09. From this
price it rallied to 1 10 because of purchases
of 250,000 bushels by Day x Co., who have here
tofore acted for the bull crowd. The bears
bad the advantage in the way of news; but the
sentiment in favor ot an uDturn was decidedly
against them and prevailed, the closing prices
being practically at the top.
Corn opened very wyak and at a decline of
to tc The low est prices of the day were made
in the first two minutes of the session. The
advance from the opening was steady, the re
actions slight. July started at GOc, and sales at
66 quickly followed. It advanced to 67c,
the closing figure..
There was a rush to sell oats at the opening
on account of the heavy receipts and promises
of more to follow. The opening was at 57X0
57c and the price quickly dropped to 51c. Toe
maiket finally recovered through sympathy
with the other cereals, closiug KGJaC higher
than yesterday.
There was a surprise in store for the dealers
in hog products, which opened weak and dull.
On the call poik was hoisted 60c per barrel
from the low point of tho day and lard
and ribs in about the same proportion. In
the end pork made a gain over yesterday's
price of 50c, lard ot 12c. and ribs of 17Kc

AN IMPORTANT DEAL.
Sale of a Manufacturing Site to the
Malleable Iron Company.
NEW BUILDINGS WILL FOLLOW.
Opening Dp a Fine 'Residence Localltj in
the East End District.
THE PEATDEES OP LOCAL SPECULATION
Manufacturing sitesjespecially those of
moderate size, are in good request. Slack
& Baird iouml a customer for one yesterday.
They sold for the People's Sayings Bank to
the Pittsburg Malleable Iron Company, a
lot fronting 281 feet on , Forty -third street,
and extending hack 130 feet to Forty-second
street, for $30,000. The purchasers will at
once begin the erection of buildings suitable
to the manufacture of their special product.
Loveling the Soil.
The Baums are grading a large portion 10 or
15 acres of their property between Fairmount
avenue 'and Villa street on the east and west
sides, and between Friendship and Center
avenues on the north and south. The supposi
tion is that this property will be plotted and
put on the market in a short time. It Is stated
that the Messrs. Banm will put up 20 or 25
houses on their own account, and also that two
well-known capitalists will erect abont as many
more between them. Owing to its proximity to
the business center and its attractive location
and surroundings, there is no doubt the entire
tract will soon be covered with handsome
homes.
A Church "With a History.
The Church ot God, on Townsend street,
near Clark, just sold by Mr. S. Arnold to the
Hebrew congregation Sbaare Torah Gates of
Wisdom has quite a history. The building
was erected about 50 years ago by the Baptists.
It was afterward sold to the Methodists. About
25 years ago the denomination known as the
Church of God acquired possession and held
it until a few days ago, when they sold out to
the Shaare Torah. Thus within its walls the
gospel has been proclaimed by three denom
inations, and the law of Moses and the
prophets will soon be exnonnded by Hebrew
teachers and listened to by a Hebrew congre
gation. The new owners will make some
temporary changes in the building ana will
enlarge it as soon as their circumstances will
permit.
Ontlook for Building Lots.
Several real estate agents were yesterday
asked for opinions in regard to the probable
output ot building lots this summer. They all
said the in qniry was good, and that as soon as a
settlement of the labor trouble could be
effected sales would be brisk. Mr. C. T. Beeck
man. Sccrotary and agent for the Laramie
Land and Improvement Company, was quite
hopeful. He believed there would bo as many
buyers for cheap lots this summer as usual.
People do not want to buy until they know
they can build. They are wailing for the labor
cloud to roll by. This acennts for the present
lull. Lower Allegheny, Perrysvllle avenue and
the Southslde are the centers of activity at
present.
Gobbling TlmDer Lands.
A syndicate of Pennsylvania capitalists,

Enough Business and Interest to Close the
Market at the Top In Most Cases
TJps and Downs on Call Spe
cial Features.
Considerable interest was displayed at the
local stock calls yesterday, but business was
light, sales amounting to only 4C0 shares, fur
nished by Electric Philadclphia,Gas, Citizens'
Traction, Manchester Traction, Airbrake, Lus
ter and La Noria. News from tho East was
bullish. In New York Panhandle preferred
advanced $1 a share.
There was a disposition early in the day to
make concessions, hut this gradually wore off
and a hardening tendency was developed which
affected most of the active list, and final prices
wero in most cases the best made. Philadel
phia Gas and Pleasant Valley were about tho
only things that closed at a loss. Advances
were scored hv Citizens' Traction on talk of in
creasing the dividend. Luster, Electric. Switch
and islgnal and Airbrake.
Electric, as usual, closed at the top, 13, of
fered at 14, about the same as Boston, but buy
ers outnumbered sellers here, showing a good
feeling in its favor. Tho familiar stoiy of suc
cessful negotiations was repeated. The only
thing going to confirm this is the qnietude of
creditors. The animal meeting of tne company
will be held at 10 A. M. on Monday, May 4. The
transfer books will be cl'ocd from noxt Mon
day to that date. Sales were :

Shares Buoyantand Active in the Forenoon,
hut Quieter In the Afternoon Old
Stocks and Industrials Dull
Railroad Bonds Active.
New Yor.K. April 2a The stock market to
day, especially in the forenoon, was an ex
tremely active and buoyant; one, with a quieter
state of affairs in the afternoon and some con
cessions from tho high prices of the early
trading. The movement yesterday was at
tributed to the Gould party, and that of to-day.
although Mr. Gould is not yet here, and the
Gould stocks were relegated to a secondary posi
tion in the market, and tho Grangers again
brought to tho front, was attributed In great
measure to the same source.
The old stocks and Industrials .were not only
sluggish to-day, but inclined to weakness at
times. In the latter Lead Trust was an excep
tion, and displayed great strength throughout
the day, with a comparatively large amo int of
business. Chicago Gas mis left to take the
same conr-e as the other Industrial. Outside
of this there was no marked movement among
active stocks. The marketfinally closed active
and firm at close to tne best prices.
Railroad bonds were more active, the sales
reaching 82,120.000, with a Srm tone through
out, but without material change in quota
tions. The followlnar table shows tne prices ot active
stocks on the .New York Slock Exchange yester
day. Corrected daily for The Dispatch by

Groceries.
The scarcity of sugar noted in this column for
a week or two past bids fair to be corrected
soon. There is now plenty ot granulated in
the hands of jobbers, and while soft whites and
brown sugar have been scarce since the tax
was lifted, if consumers will but possess their
souls in pationce tbey will soon be amply sup
plied. Coffees are still flrm. All wholesale
