TESTEEDAI IN THE C0DK1T CODCTS Yesterday was the limit of time set a week- apo by the court in the case of the Commonwealth versus C. M. Bitrelow, Chief of tbe Department of Public Works, in which the latter was to show cause why he had disobeyed the court in the wharf natter. J. Scott Fercuson, one of the prose cntir attorneys, was not j.rcsent, but Mr. B'gelow was, and his attorney filed an answer, and the case will be continued until next baturday. Bipelow. one of the defendants In tbe above entitled caso, in answer to tbe rule to show cane why Le hould not be punished for contempt of court in not mmplyin!; with its li-nt-'Lce of September 30, IWU. and why he should tint coi. be compelled to comply with raid sentence without delay, respectfully says, that thenmsance of nhicli he uas convicted a the nilicc iu of dirt on . the wharf of the Fittsburc Mae of the Allesbeny river, between Third and Fourth stieets, and that the -work was done bv his direction as Chief of the De partnent of Public Works for the benefit of tbe public and as an improvement. 'i he court adjuJced him euilty of bavins committed a nuisance: not that tbe work was not an !ir.proement. but that the law did not authorize it. On January 7 lat, a bill authoi Jziuc such improvement was introduced in tbe Lczi-latuic, parsed the Senate, and is now in the House ot Representatives, and the defend ant believes it will pa that body in two weeks which, if done, the defendant believes, would lecalize the saiti work done by him on tbe said public wharf, and the detenuant believes that the said bill would have been passed before the expiration of the six month's limit, otherwise be iou.d have abated the said nuisance." TLe answer in conclusion sets forth that Air. Rj'ecIow is readv and willing, if the court de sire, to have abated the nuisince to follow their wish, but pravs that three month's time yet be Kiven to await tbe action of tbe Legisla ture and Governor on tbe bill. A careful observer would have noted that with the advent of pleasant weather a great number of new hats have made their appear ance on the streets. The hat question is 'one ot vast interest to gentlemen, and in order that they may be thoroughly posted as to "the correot thine." Mr. Kuben, the well- known Smithtield street hatter, has been asked to give his views: Tbe round crown hat, says Mr. Kuben, has received a. temporary backset. The flat top uiS hat, known in this city as "The Union Squaie," has the call, and'not unde servedly so, for it is a decidedly stylish and becoming head covering. Tlieir sale has already been enormous, thoatrh the season has but began. The round-crown derby is not relegated by any means. "The Schen ley," which is the latest of that kind, al though not strikingly new, is withal a model ot neatness, combined with elegance and style. In colors there is a marvelous variety, with such odd names as Cuba, Cedar, Ha vana, Tan, Kussett, Melton, Granite, Brighton, Combine, Electric, Java and about a dozen more. Crush hats still hold their own. An entirely new thine in that line has made its appearance, and bids fair to become a great rage. Its weight is but one ounce, the lightest ever made, and owing to its extreme feather weight Mr. Kuben has named it after a bird, "The Cockoo," and feels confident that it will prove a flyer. Silk hats enjoy a steady demand, the style this sprinir being very conservative. The straw hat season is vet six weeks off WELL WORTH CONSIDERING Are the Bargains at Thompson's New York Grocery. 21 lbs granulated sugar 12 lbs extra iarge prunes 8 fbs choice California peaches .5 1 00 . 1 00 1 00 8 lbs choice apricots 1 CO Extra sugar-cared shoulders, per rb. 6 16 lbs raisins 1 00 Pure ground pepper, per lb Choice Orleans molasses, per gallon Choice Honey Drip srrups. per caL 33 35 23 00 00 15 H3 granulated sal soda CO bars good serubbi ug soap 30 bars white floatinc soap. 30 bars 5-ceut wax soap 28 lb bars German mottled soap.... 10 tt3 dried lima beans 12 lbs cream cheese 14 lbs sun dried peaches 1 lb best smoking tobacco 1 R good chewing tobacco 12 quarts navy beans. o' rbs large lump starch - 30-lb pails jelly 30-lb pails preserves 5 bottles English pickles 8 lbs prepared cocoanut. 9 cans fine French peas 1 dozen parlo' matches, 200s 12 cans good sugar corn 1 1 1 00 1 00 1 00 1 00 1 00 20 25' 1 00' 25 1 50 3 00 00 00 00 10 75 90 12 cans good tomatoes. urbs20-cent tea 100 61bs35-cent tea 100 4&s30-cent tea 100 3rbs40-cent tea 100 2 rbs.
