At 12 minutes after noon to-day tbe big bell in the City Hall tower will boom out l-S-4-5 just 46 years to tbe minute front tbe time the historic fire of 1S45 started at the southeast corner of Second and Ferry streets. Morris Mead, Superintendent of the Bu reau of Electricity, will set the heaTy ham mer ot the big bell in motion by means of his new fire alarm apparatus, which has just been finished. Superintendent Mead will sit in his eyrie, with his fingers on tbe key, counting tbe seconds and looking down upon a scene of wealth and industry that the I'lttsburger of '45 would hare never dreamed of, even under tin. inspiring influence of hasheesh or mellow Monongahela rye whisky. Forty-six years ago a procession of coal carts' coming from and returning to the mines at Mir.crsyille gave a gloomy anima tion to tbe scene, which was framed with low frame builaintrs ana lumber yards. To-day the carts are replaced by cable cars, electric cars, and other modern means of locomotion, while mammoth business blocks hare risen on the sites of tne old shanties. Came to Town to fcee the Fire. .Ex-Sheriff Fife, then in the heyday of youth, has a vivid remembrance of the great fire. Mr. Fife was living in the coun try, several mile- irom the city, and was The District Deslioyrd bv Fi'e. Indicated b the dark portion ot map!. apprised of the magnitude of tbe conflagration by the heavy volumes of smoke which clouded the s.un and set the birds guessing as to whether night had reallv come or whether tl e mainspringof the planets Sad broken, allowing the celestial apparatus to runs down. Mr. Fife, with man of his neighbors came to the citj, and were joined on the roads by lundred The country people poured into town from cier direction, and many of them lent much-needed assistance in rescuing prop erty and fishtirg the names. Thf origin of the lire was due primarily to lie 8troug instinct for cleanliness which in flames the Pittsburg housekeeper and renders her name a synonwn throughout the world for all the housewifeli virtues. Colonel William Diehl owned a row of frame b&ildiugs on the snuthest corner of Second and Ferry streets. Mrs. r-canlon, one of Ms tenants, haubeen un able to perform her weekly wash on Monday owing to the inclement weather, and had put it off from day to day until lhurday, April 10. 1643. She could stand the strain no longer, and as the weather was clear and the wind, while strong, was of a good drj ing quality, the house wife determined to wash right then and there. The Besnlt ot a Late Wakli. Mrs. Scaulon tuilt a nice little bonfire in tbe bicljard and put her wash kettle onto boil wnile she went into the house to eat dinner and ncrre herself for the conflict with her arch enemy Dirt. The wind was in sportive mood that day, and thinking to have a little fun with its brother element, fire, carelessly tossed the flaming embers hither and thither. One of these firebrands was carried onto the roof of an icehouse on Ferry street. The flames en veloped this bulluing and Colonel Diehl's tenement, then crossed SSecocd street and swallowed up Colonel James Vooas cotton factory. The Third Presbyterian Church, at the corner of Ferry and Third streets, was toon in flimes, and here the firemen made a stubborn fight, hoping to stem the sea of fire on the east. In this therwere successful, nut m tbe meantime the flames had spread in the other directions. 1 he flames spread, overleaping all obstacles, until they embraced a district bounded by .Mar ket street. Grant street. Diamond street and the Monougahela rlrer, and had extended clear out Plpetown, then outside the city and known as Kensington. It extended one mile from its starting point, destroying more than 20 squares containing 1.100 dwell ings. At 7 o'clock in the evening the fire was ever, it had burned itself out. An Old Acquaintance Renewed In San Fran cisco Reginald Talbot Still Alive and Not Kicking He Looks Well and No Donht Rett Well Evidently a Resident of .Easy Street. Reginald Talbot, who figured as a real, live English "Lord" in Pittsburg within the recollection of tne younger portion of the population, is still in the land of the living. "Me Lud" is now or was ten days ago in the gay city at the Golden Gate. While a party of Pittsburgers were taking a con stitutional in San Francisco recently one of them suddenly exclaimed: "There's Talbotl" His companions turned as he broke away to renew acquaintance with Regy, only to seo tho fascinating young Englishman disappear up an alley, through a door or down a coal hole with Hermann-Mke agility. Reginald was accompanied by a dapper-looking chap, evidently on the same lay as himself. He undoubtedly realized be had been sighted, as tbe sndden disappearance convinced the Pittsburgers that tho recognition had been mutual. A day or two after this episode Regluald ap peared in tbe lobby of the Palace Hotel. The Pittsburgers were there. He who was first to recognize Lord Talbot on the street broke away and neon had a firm grip on My Lord's right arm. To tbe ejaculation of "Don't you know me. Talbot, old boyf" Reginald re sponded: "Of course I do But I'm not Talbot now. Call me Lonsberry." Then confidences were exchanged while bottles were tilted in the seclusion of the Palace bar. To cut tho story short. Mr. Pittsburg, seeing that Reginald was well fed and well groomed, asked him if he was prepared to satisfy a long standing account. Regy plead poverty, but said bis companion was well fixed. As Pitts burg didn't know his chum, and hadneverdone business with him on the Lord-like plan, this confession conld not be utilized, and it was de cided to let bygones be bjgones. My Lord, under the influence of the musical glasses, grew confidential, and told his Pittsbnrg victim that when he quitted New York be went to En gland, thence to Australia and finally drifted to San Francisco. He calmly acknowledged that he was doing business in the same old way, and that things were coming easy. The gentleman who imparted this informa tion j estcrday saj s Talbet looks like a four-time winner, aud evidentlr has an easy conscience, a gourmet's palate and a millionaire's wajs.
