The condition or Elmer Collins, the young man, who has contracted to fast for SO days, has become a very serious matter, and it is not im probable that legal steps will be taken to-day to put an end to the exhibition. The doctors who have been watching every change in the condi tion of Collins, seem to be absorbed in the sci entific phase or the affair, and are calmly indif ferent to the suffering and danger to the faster. Yesterday afternoon a consultation between leading people engaged in humane work and a prominent law firm was held, with a view to putting a stop to the fast. The attention of Agent Dean, ot the Anti-Cruelly bociety. was called to the matter, and lie says that he will put a stop to the fast if it can legallv be accom plished. Mr. Dean says that Manager Davis shifts the responsibility on the ground that the rast is entirely voluntary on the part of Collins, and that be has no power tn compel the faster to give up his foolhardy undertaking. Mr. Davis tells Ageut Dean and the Humane Society people that he made the offer in good faith, and that to end the fast now would have a tendency to ceate a suspicion that he had not acted in good faith with tin- faster. 1 he museum manager further savs. however, that no consideration would weigh a straw with him, if It can bo absolutely demonstrated that the life of the faster Is in danger, and that if such proves to be true he will pay Collins the $1,000 and do what he can to persuade him to end the fast.
