THE MECHANICS' GIFT Equestrian Statue of Washington. Is Jteady to Be Unveiled. EESULT OF TlYE TEAKS' WORK, Fifteen Thousand Men lipected to Tartici pate Jn the raratlc THE SCHOOL HOUSE WILL TLAI A TART The "Washington Monument, which has been erected in the Allegheny Parks by the -American Mechanics will be unveiled Mon day morning. It has been completed ready for the ceremonies. It has been five years since the idea of erecting the monument was conceived by H. R Staving, of Allegheny Council, then' a member of Common Council. Committees were created, and the work of raising funds "was commenced. In the early days the com mittee found this task to be a gigantic one, and the original plan of having the statue rectcd exclusively bv tlie councils in Alle gheny was amended, and it was made to in clude all tlioc in Western Pennsylvania. TJj) to 1SSD when the lair was held in the Coliseum building, the committee had little hope of obtaining the money, but at the fair ?6,000 i.-asclcaicd.ond siuce that time the council and members hae reduced the de ficiency to about SSOa. Through the efforts of the members who are still contributing, the fair at the Central Kink, which is now in progress and the sale of photographs of the monument which have just been taken by Ilaushold, the Federal street photo grapher, it is expected this deficit will be wiped out shortly. Programme or Ceremonies Completed. Tlie programme for the unveiling cere monies was completed yesterday. A plat form has been erected west of the monument for speakers and invited guests. The ora tion will be delivered by Hon. John P. Cox, after which several hundred school children will sing national airs. S. TJ. Trent will formally present the monument to the city and Mayor Wyman and Arthur Kennedy, Chairman of the Park Committee will de liver addresses of neceptince. The committee has received letters of re cret iroin Governor Patuson, Hon. John Dalzell, Edward S. Deemer and J. P. Wmower Other State and national officers of the organization, together with many prominent citizens, will witness the unveil ing of the monument as guests of the gen eral committee. A description of the statue fs unnecessary at this time, as it has appeared in The Dis patch before. The Mechanics' parade, which also takes place on Monday, will be the largest dem onstration of the kind ever witnessed in the city. All the arrangements are complete, at-d the Mechanics only hope for good weather. It is expected that there will be fully 6.000 isiting members, added to the local councils, wiU swell the ranks to over 15.000 men. There will be manv special features. The Braddock councils will carry red, white and blue umbrellas. Lescallette Council will have a float in line representing a school house. The Resolute Guards, a military organization composed of Heading members, will be in line with their own music. Coun cils ana delegations will be present from points between Philadelphia aud Chicago. A Hotel Dinner After tho Parade. After the parade the Chief Marshal and Lis stafi will dine at the Hotel Hamilton, as guests of the proprietors, who are members of the order. The management of the fair at the Central Sink has arranged for a matinee Monday afternoon, from 2 to 6 o'clock. The members of the order are making cx iensite arrangements to have all their nouses and places of business decorated. Some of this work will be done to-day. ll is proposed that every Mechanic and patri otic citizen decorate his home once in the year in honor of the great patriot saint. Monday will be observed js "Washing ton's Birthday" by the Pittsburg potofiice as follows, by order of Postmaster McKeau: Mam office and stations will close at 12 31.; one stamp window will be kept open until 6 T. M , after that hour stamps will be sold at general delivery window, open day and night Money order and registry offices will be closed all da ; carriers' window open all day. Mails will be dispatched as usual. Six-trip letter carriers will make three de liveries, at T. 9 ana 10.30 A. 51. Three-trip curriers will make two deliveries, at V and 10:30 A. 21. Foot ana mounted collectors will make regular collections. KCDYAKD KIPLING in his letter for THE DISPATCH Jo-morrow tells how a lew Chinese Ironclads could destroj all of Uncle fain1, coast cities. He also demotes some attention to Buffalo and a few American social customs. Little. You will agree with me in the fact that the necessity of perfect sight, and the correct ap preciation ot all the objects surrounding us are not only absolutely assential to our hap piness, but also necessary for our success in life. Under these circumstance, it is very important that you hae jour eyes thor oughly examined belore adopting the use of glasses. Consult Prof. Little; if glasses arc what you require, lie will ecientifically ad just the necessary lenses to correct their visual defects at moderate cost.
