CRIMINALS IN COUBT.
Ihe Work Performed by District At
torney Johnston in a Year.
CUTTING DOWN THE EXPENSES.
'Judges and Attorneys Pleased With -Innovations
Introduced.
JILL THE KEWS OP THE COUKTI COURTS
The District Attorney's clerks yesterday
completed a report of the work done in the
Criminal Court during the year 1890; also a
.report of the last term which has j ust closed.
'District Attorney Johnston and the judges
trho sat in the Criminal Court during the
year were highly gratified at the results
shown by the report.
A steady increase in the amount oi work
is shown up to the present term. Daring
'the September sessions there were two
. judges on the bench, while the present term
just closed was presided over by Judge
1 Stowe alone, and he came within 28 cases of
disposing of as many as did the two judges
last term.
During the last four terms 32 homicide
cases were tried. Of that number 3 were
.convicted of murder in the first degree, 8 of
murder in the second degree, 9 were convict
ed or pleaded guilty to manslaughter, and in
10 caes not guilty verdicts were rendered.
Of the latter conviction was sought for by
the District Attorney in but two cases.
Nearly Cleaned Up the list.
Only 21 cases jr over from the present
term to then j Steven are on affidavits
filrrl anrl In thn Mher ten the defendants were
not arrested. There were ten weeks at court, j
4iti4.3a average of 50 cases a week were tried.
Tbe cost of running the court for 1SS0 is
-shown to have been $5,309 62 less than the year
preceding, in suite of the large increase in the
volume of business. This saving is the resnlt
of the system adopted by th District Attorney,
-which necessitates the closes: scrutiny into the
costs in every case and the reducing of the
number ut witnesses to those who are material
to the trial of cause. At a consequence, in
smte of the fact that over 200 more cases were
tried in IKK) than In 1SSU. the saving to the
conntv was over Jo. 000.
The innovation uf a weekly list proved a great
aid in assisting the work of the court. At
tornejs were given plenty of time to secure
nostponements which prevented cutting down,
the daily lists and so interrupting the work of
-court. The District Attorney was highly com
Iiliniented In-the Court-and attorneys on tha
fcuccess of his now departure.
The reports were submitted to Judge Stowe
and approved by him. Bo expressed himself
as greatly pleased with the new system.

At the regular meeting of Humane Society
yesterday afternoon T. M. Kenney. of Mead
ville.Pa.;T.J. Wickam. of Mrrcer. Pa.; J. C.
Hobangh, of Greenville, Pa., and J. M. Cargo,
of Rochester, Pa.,were appointed agents of the
society for their respective vicinities.
President Eaton reported bis trip to the Con
vention of Humane Societies ot 'this State held
in Philadelphia on February 12. The conven
tion was held to prepare a new code of humane
laws, which Is to be presented to the State
-Legislature next week. The code of. laws was
chiefly prepared by the Western Pennsylvania
Humane Society. The Philadelphia societies
were a little careful about the action they took
in the matter. A repeal of all the humane
laws was asked for. On this account the so
cieties in the East took especial care lest the
laws should be passed and their power be les
sened. Steps were taken to present a petition
asking the Legislature to oppose the passage of
two bills now before that body. One oi the
bills has been presented by an. Kit county Rep
resentative. which, if -passed, will legalize trap
shooting in this State. The other bill is one re
pealing a law which authorizes Hnmane agents
to remove crippled horses from street cars.
The committee which presents the new bill to
the Legislature will also ask for the noo-pass-ago
of the last two bills. In all probability this
committee will hold a public meeting at Harris
burg during their visit there.

Charles M. Gearing, of the Southside, who
dropped out of this city one day last winter so
quietly that for a time none but bis intimate
lriends knew what had become of him, appears
to have strnck deep root In Brownwood. Brown
county. Tex., and evidently intends to grow up
with the country. Harry W. Sellers and Will
iam Ross have received information that Mr.
Gearing is boring for oil, and the Sunset Oil
Company is one of the institutions ot Brown
county, according to the Brownwood Jiullelin.
He is a member of the Brownwood Board of
Trade.
The people of Brownwood evidently appre
ciate petroleum more than do those of Se wick
ley, as, when thn whistle of the engine an
nounced that drilling was to commence, the
people of the town turned out, and, with music,
toasting and feasting, celebrated the event ana
presented 'the Sunset Oil Company wilh the

feet in length, of the finest silk, red. white and

Is Disease a Punishment for Sin?
Tbe following advertisement, published
by a prominent western patent medicine
bouse, would indicate that they regard
disease as a punishment for sin:
"Do you wish to know the quickest way
to cure a severe cold? We will tell you.
To cure a cold quickly, it must be treated
before tbe cold has become settled in the
system. This can always be done if you
choose to, as nature in her kindness to man
gives timely warning and plainly tells you
in nature's way, that as a punishment lor
some indiscretion, you are to be afflicted
with a cold unless you cboose to ward.it off
by prompt action. The first symptoms of a
cold, in most cares, are a dry, loud cough and
sneezing. Tbe cough is soon followed by a
profuse watery expectoration and the sneez
ing by a profuse watery discharge from tbe
cose. In severe cases there is a thin white
coating on the tongne. What to do? It is
only necessary to take Chamberlain's Cough
Remedy in double doses every boar. That
will greatly lessen the severity of the cold
and in most cases will effectually counteract
it, and cure what would have been a severe
cold within one or two days' time. Try it
and be convinced." CO cent bottles for sale

STREET AND LOBBY.
A Picture of Panic Stricken Human
ity iu a Railroad Accident.
JOHNSTOWK'S FATE INEVITABLE.
The Song- Birds Are Here Shakespeare
Finds Ker Worshipers in Plenty.
ABOTJTTOWN WITH THETOPICALTALKEE
"Humanity does not show up well in a rail
road accident," said United States Immigration
Commlsslo ner Layton. "I was in tbe front car
of the Fort Wayne train which ran into a land
slide last Saturday tight at Kmswortb, and the
scene was not calculated to Increase one's re
spect for the male biped called man. Such yell
ing and rushing hither and thither was there,
and some of the men made a good deal more
noise and hurried to secure their own safety
more precipitately than tbe women. In fact
the calmest person I saw was a little woman
with a pale, sickly face across the aisle from
me. She didn't scream or jump, and when I
told her she was safest keeping still she ac
cepted the assurance without a murmur and
sat there till it was found that for fear of
further landslides it would be wise to abandon
the first car. I've noticed in railroad accidents
as a railroad man I have been in a dozen or
two and once was thrown from a treigbt car on
the Packsaddlo and landed in a tree
unharmed that two kinds of men
give trouble. There are the poorly
nourished, lean highly-sensitive men, whose
nerves get the best of them in time of danger,
and the big, lumpy, stunld galoots who get ex
cited under similar circumstances and precipi
tate a stampede by mere weicht of physical
force. The latter class is the more dangerous,
of course, and 1 don't remember a case of
panic of any kind where theleaders in tho rush,
often fatal in its results, have not been mostly
men of large physical proportions but small
grit."
Johnstown's "Watery Fate.
"Tbe high water at Johnstown is very re
grettable, but I don't see how such events are
to be avoided," said J. B. Scott, to whom the
title ot Dictator well won at Johnstown year be
fore last still clings. "The position of Johns
town between tbe Conemaugh and Stony Creek
1 snpli That Gnnrm ,m nnnirnlHahlA rThn f?nn.
emaugh comes down from Cresson and the j
mountains beyond and joins Htony ureeK,
which drains an extensive watershed as
far as Somerset, forming the Conemaugh
proper. The amount of water which these two
streams bring down in a rainy season is far be
yond tbe capacity of tbe Concmangh below tho'
junction. To remedy this two' expedients are
suggested. One is to dredge out tbe Cone
maugh. If the depth of the Conemaugh bo
doubled how can it carry off an increase of say
20 times tho camcitv of tbe channel, as
may be expected in flood timoT Tbe other is to i
raise Johnstown six or eight feet. Baislng a '
city six teet is no picayune job, ana it is certain
ly beyond tbe means of the inhabitants of
Johnstown. But, said someone to me recently
Chicago has been raised six, eight or ten feet
successfully. That is true, but what may bo
accomplished profitably with a commercial
center like Chicago is not necessarily within
the reach of Johnstown. The only resource of
tbe Johnstown people is to keep a close watch
upon the barometer and get out of the valley
when floods are due,"
At Shakespeare's Shrine.
"The love for Shakespeare is growing among
young people in PittsDurg," said Byron W.
King, the elocutionist. "I remember the time
when it was hard to interest the rising genera
tion in tbe works of tbe great bard. Now my
Shakespeare class nnmbers over 90. Some peo
ple are surprised that when my pupils under
take a play tbey choose Shakespeare, but tbe
reason is that they are interested in literature
and Shakespeare especially, aud their audience
is likely to contain those who have the samo
desires. The easier plays which might be chosen
pleaso neither the pupils nor their parents aud
preceptors. Hence the recurrence to Shakes--peare.
The dignity of many of tbe amateu.'.
actors would hardly allow them to undertake
less legitimate drama. For Instance, in a re
jected performance of "The Merchant of Ven
ice," at Canonsburg. no less than three Doctors
of Divinity, a trio ot D. D.'s, were cist Cor
prominent parts. The play was not given, bjut
tbe high character of the cast is an instance of
the general rule."
Song Birds Here Already.
The mildness of February and March, which
last year came on the top of a gentle December
and January and coaxed japonicas ana other i
trees and plants of like sangulneness into blos
soming long before their season, seems likely 1 1
be repeated this year. It may Interest city peo
ple to know that since' Friday last the
signs of spring in tbe country have
been multiplying. On Saturday I saw
tbe first robin of tbe season on my own
lawn. On Sunday in tho course of a round
about stroll through Sewickley I saw three If
more robins and beard a blue bird's cheery I
song Yesterday the whistle of robins was no j.
longer a strange souna, ana j. saw a pairoi mue
birds flying from branch to branch in a natch of
trees beside tho swollen Ohio. Of course tho
red birds are on hand. also, for many of them
spend their winters north also. Tbe sweet, short
song of tbe oriole was another of tbe spring
anthems that I heard while tho warm raln'waji
falling yesterday.
The Ohio's Jamboree.
Since the Johnstown flood the Ohio has'Jnot
presented an angrier appearance than it did
yesterday. The wreckage was plentiful, in
cluding shanties, fences and all sorts of barrels
and household debris. It was to be noted, also
during the afternoon that tho tide's freight
kept to the middle of the stream, a sure Elgn
that the river was risintr. At Bellevue tbe
piers and quavs and everything connected with
tbe dam but the bouse ot tbe lockkeeper were
completely hidden under the brown flood. Logs
had jammed with other floating material
across tbe lock's stnngpiece. and the current
dashed so violently acainst this obstruction that
the spray rose above it a dozen leet. At Glen- 9
field tbe island which usually stands high and I
dry between the railroad and the river, bounded B
on one siae Dy ine a.iuouck creex, was aiso
clean out of sight. A singular sight was the
derrick below Seven-Mile Island, erected a,
year ago by some venturesome oil producer,,
who thought to strike a connecting link be
tween the Coraopolls and Haysville oil
pools by sinking the drill through a
sandbank almost in mid river. The wafer
bad engulfed the boiler bonse and walking
beam, and tbe derrick looked marvelorisly
frail, a solitary tower besieged by violent foes.
The scene at this point was Sven stranger -when
night fell and tbe orange flames marking the
wells above Coraopolis broadened oat anil shed
a glare of light upon the broad wreck-srirewn
river rushing noisily among the trees uron its
submerged banks. 11. J.
