SEVERALBIG DEALS
On the Carpet in the Squirrel Hill
District, Near Schenlej Park.
REBUILDING DOWNTOWN STREETS.
Electric Fnrsues an Erratic Course, Dub
to Various Influences.
TEE SEATS AND GOSSIP OP THE CITI
The Twenty-second ward (Squirrel Hill)
seems to have an irresistible charm for capi
talists seeking to place their money where,
in. their opinion, it will do the most good.
The park is, no doubt, a strong element of
popularity, since it insures rapid improve
ment when the ice is once broken 'aud con
sequent enhancement of values. The prob
ability, or rather certainty, of two rapid
transit lines travers.n; this district at no
distant das is also attracting many buyers Mho
set a high pnee on country comforts.
It is u ell known to the public that trans
actions in the Twenty-second ward last year
3 on ted up sonietbiug o er J5U0,00Q. These pur
chase. ere by a syndicate. And tbeoDject, as
;:ivon out. was to secure right of way for the
fehort Cut Hail road to Homestead. In tbij
the were successful, according to reliable in
formation. But this, it seems. Las not stopped
tbebujing. A strong syndicate, whether the
original one or not is immaterial, is negotiating
thi ongh Mr. Ira M. liurcbflcld for several tracts
of land in close proximity to the park and con
venient to the projected railroad. The con
sideration borders closely upon S7o,G0U.
If the deals go through, of kuU.1i there is
good prospect, as there is nothing serious in
the May. the land v.ill lie cut up into large lots
tor fine residences. While the name of the old
synd cate may finally be disclosed iu these
deals and the Short Cut be the ultmate bene
ficiarv, the probability is tha- the negotiations
are being conducted by gentlemen not previ
ously Identified as investors with that locality,
but who see in its fine location and certain
growth a good chance to make a profitable
turn.
A Business Jaunt.
A party of business men left the city yester
day for Alabama to examine and report upon
the condition and prospects of several impor
tant enterprises affiliated v ith the iron trade,
p In which they and other Pittsburg capitalists
are interested. Among those who went were
Colonel fcchoonmaker. Albert Childs and J. "IV
Herron. The) travel in a special car as the
guests of a syndicate of prominent houthern
gentlemen who had been in the city several
tia-.s urging the merits of Alabama as a. safo
and profitable field for the investment of
Korlhern capital.
Unprofitable Property.
Speaking of the necessity of rebuilding on
many of the downtown streets to give business
a chance, and also to give the city a respectable
apiearance, a well-known business man re
marked jesterda: "There are scores of prop
erties In the lower part of Pittsburg, taking it
f 10m Grant street down, that yield less than 3
per cent to their owner, who are unable to im
prove ihem and v ill not sell to those who arc
This prevents improvement where most
needed and where burmess sites are particu-
I rl scarce and in demand. These properties
should be improved by some means. To keep
them in their present condition is detrimental
to the cm. and is not likely to benefit the
owners. Br selling at a fair valuation they
would be able to invest elsewhere and secure a
better return. This would benefit tho entire
citj, and give business a chance in a district
where it is now badly crippled.
Business Xem and Gossip.
Between 20 and 30 bouses are in various stages
of completion in tbeupperpartof Wilkinsburg.
D. C Hamilton, druggist, on Ohio street, Al
legheny. was the purchaser of the property No.
171 North avenue, reported in Sunday's issue.
The deal was made through V. A, Herron &
boos.
Tho largest of 43 mortgages on file for record
yesterday was for 55,500. Each of 11 was for
less than 1,000.
Tho assignee of the defunct Farmers' and
Mechanics' Bank commenced yesterday the
payment of an S 7-12 per cent dividend, at 1707
Careen street.
The material interests of Allegheny City are
suffering lor lark of business houses. Capital
and enterprise on that side of the river seem to
be as badly misdirected as on this.
The first big building permit of the year was
taKen out jesterday. It contemplates a six
norv business bouse on Liberty avenue, to cost
39 000.
Bad as the weather was jesterday. house
hunters were out in full force. This is a case
of the early bird getting the worm.
Street improvemtnt is the absorbing ques
tion in Edgewond. and feeling runs so high that
some of the citizens scarcely speak to each
other as they pass by.

Luster a IVeak Brother.
The week opened at the Stock Exchange with
Electric still tlio center of attraction. It sold
to the extent of L222 shares, but mostly in small
lots, blocks being rare. This seems to indicate
that Eastern buyers have stepped aside and
their places been taken by the local contingent.
The movements of the stock during the dav
were rather erratic The first sale was at 13.
It then advanced to 13, and fell back to tho
opening figure, but was soon bulled uptollVf.
and finally to HJf. The last sale was at 1,
and the final bid 15JJ.
The weakness was due to the paucity of re
ports from Boston and to the non-appearance
of the expected statement from Mr. Wcst
lngbouse. He arrived in the city: yesterday
morning, but relived to talk for publication
further than to deny the report of a consolida
tion with the Thomson-Houston Company,
lhc strength at the close and before was at
tributed to confidence that he will succeed in
placing the entire amount in preferred stock.
Philadelphia Gas improved its standing, clos
ing a large fraction better than toe opening,
but Luster lost nearly four points, with predic
tions that it would oon be down to par. There
was a bid of 95 for Bank of Pittsburg, the best
price ever offered for this stock. Total sales
were 1.277 shares.

The Usual Dullness and Professional Char

Advances Dne to Manipulation Ball
road Bonds Leu Animated.
New i'oiik. Feb. 16. The stock market to
day showed no change in its general dullness
and lack of character, bat the temper of the
speculation was decidedly stronger. The
Grangers, Goulds and Vanderbilts led the up
ward movement in the general list, tho first
named being most prominent and securing th
largest final advances.
The trading is still almost entirely profession
al, and even the upward movement to-day was
owing more to clique support than any in
fluence of a general nature. The foreigners
were, if anything, the most powerful influence,
and London this morning came higher, while all
the arbitrage bouses bought in the early trad
ing, especially of St. Paul and Louisville and
Nashville Union Pacific, Bock Island and
Burlington followed, whilo certain specialties
exhibited marked strength at times. The in
dustrials werovery dull until the afternoon,
when Distiller", which had been drooping, was
suddenly lifted on the declaration of the dlrl
dend of 1 per cent.
There w as considerable covering of shorts in
Louisville, Union Pacific ana Rock Island, but
Pacific Mall was helDed by favnraDle reports
on the shipping bill again, and the inside sup
port was very noticeable In Chicago Gas. Other
movements generally were insignificant, and
the market finally closed dull but strong at the
best prices of the day, leaving most of the list
fractionally higher than Saturday, though
Wheeling and Lake Erie rose 1J, Burlington
and Quincy li, and Cleveland, Cluciunati. Chi
ngo and St. Louis, Chicago Gas. SL Paul.
Rock Island, and Louisville and Nashville each
1 per cent
Railroad bonds were less animated than usual
of late, and the trading was rednced to 1,091,
000. The market, like stocks, displayed a firm
tone here and there. There was much less vim
to the movement, and most of the issues traded
in show no change whatever through the day.

Steady rains and mild weather proved ad

eggs this was emphatically a blue Monday. The
drop in price of eggs the past week has been

jobbers are now unloading at a los. Top price
in Chicago this morning was 16c per dozen.
Potatoes are active and firm at outside quota

It is too early in the week for any new de

wretched country roads and labor troubles all
combine tq make the movement slow. Sugar
is quiet. Jobbers are carrying light stocks for
the obvious reason that a drop of lc to 2c per

NEW EXPECTATIONS.
TWO GOOD NEW WELLS AT WHDW00D
EEVIVE H7TEEEST.
Much Depends on the Next Two Days The
Pittsburg Plate Glass Company Drilling
Gas Wells A McCurdy Hole Turns Ont
Better Than Expected.
ISrXClAT. TILEQKAM TO TUB DISPATCIt.l
Wild-wood, Feb. 16. A little more in
terest is manifested on the southwest line
since Uingbeisen No. 3 and the Marks &
Mandeville No. 1 are showing for wells.
The Harks well tapped the sand Hon day
morning and began flowing. Deeper drill
ing improved the well, and to-night it is
making six inches an hour in a 250 tank.
The well, when The Dispatch scout left,
was two feet in the sand and shut down to
move ont the boiler. It is not likely that
drilling will be resumed until some time this
forenoon. The well is located 180 rods south
west and in advance on a 45 line from Riug
beUen's No. 3. Great interest is attached to
the final results, and when the drill is again set
to work it will only be a short time until more
will be known about the southwest line.
To draw conclusions from the present status
of the well is presumptuous. One fact, how
ever, has been demonstrated on tbo southwest
line, and that Is the sand has been growing
thinner in this direction, which, taken In con
junction with the light caliber of the last wells
comDloted on the Rungaand Ringhelsen farms,
would seem to indicate that gushers hero are a
thing of tho past. The well "may on deeper
drilling be materially Increased in production
and a sand of good thickness fonnd, in which
event a new lease of life will be given this
quarter of Wildwood. The next 48 hours will
determine much.
The Roth Oil Company is hourly expecting
to reach the sand in its well on the Kvlefarm.
and its proximity to tho Marks well invests it
with much interest. Guffy, Queene iCo.'s
Heidelberg farm well, located 111 ad
vance of all other wells, was expected to And
the sand by the middle of the present week,
but unfortunately the rig caught fire from a
strong flow of gas struck in the 30-foot this
morning and was" burned to the ground.
The Bowman gasser. which was shot Friday
and spoken of at the time by The Dispatch,
has not shown so much improvement as was
anticipated by the indications at that time.
The Roth Oil Company gave its crooked hole
on the Kuizer farm a light shot of high ex
plosive Saturday, but was not successful in
getting it straight again. Barnsdale &
Gillespie's No. 9 Kress is having a serious time
fishing for a set of broken jars. Griffith &
Co.'s No. 3 Ringbeisen is reported to-night
as doing 30 barrels an hour.
To-morrow and next day will make an impor
tant period in the history of Wildwood, as tour
or five advance wells will most likely corns in
Griffith & Co.'s No. 5. Ringbeisen; Beers fc Co ,
Henry Kvle farm; Forat & Greenlee, Peebles
farm; Iirland & Hughe-, Bryant farm, and
Dickson &. Co. on tho McCune. The McClay
well was drilled deeper to-day in the fourth
sand, and the pressure increased considerable.
Contractor Butler says that by to-morrow be
will strike a rip-roaring gasser iu this forma
tion. Productive Petersville Leases.
Fetersville Black & Haslet sometimo
since purchased tbo lease of Walker & Abra
hams on the Hiram Graham farm, and alter
giving it a renovation it is producing nicely.
They are now building another rig on the same
property, and will commence drilling as soon as
possible. The same parties are getting ready
to drill a well on their purchase from GutTy &
Queen on the Nicholas heirs' farm. Hartman
A Hnvis, on tho farm joining the Nicholas on
the South, who have been pumping saltwater
out of the wll for the last month, have been
rewarded and the well Is now making 50 barrels
a day. This party is building a No. 2 rig on the
same farm.
Some Life In tho Saxonburg Pool.
Saxonburq Liggett & Haymaker's No. 15
is in the sand on the Crawford farm, with the
hole full of oil. It will make a good Saxonburg
producer. Frazier Co. have started a well on
the Bowman farm, where they are hunting for
an outlet for the old pool. The well is located
2,000 feet east of the Battentield farm develop
ments. Ihinan Co., on the Webber farm,
southwest of the Crawford one mile, will, most
likely, bring their well In the last of next week.
This i a wildcat venture. The production of
the old Saxonbnrg pool is about 600 barrels a
day.
Operations at Watre's Station.
Watre's Station Lupher Bros. & Bark
have a well 75 feet In the 100-foot, on tho
Martin farm, which is filled up 300 feet with oil.
It looks like a fair well. Leidecker .ICo. have
commenced spndding on tbo Kelly farm,
located three-quarters of a mile southeast of
Watre's station, while Russell Co. are build
ing a rig on tbo same farm. If Webber it Hus
selton don't have any tad luck they should
reach tbe third sand on the Granatu by the
middle of tbe week.
Tn o Good Murdocksv Hie Wells.
Murdocksville Forest Company's No. 2,
on tho Coventry farm, is in, and good for 65
barrels. This company has bronght in a well
on tbe Janett Coventry farm which will do 40
barrels a day. There Is a string of tools lost in
tbe Dennis No. 2, which had just reached tbe
sand.
Many New Gas Wells Begun.
Butler The Pittsburg Plate Glass Works
are starting 15 gas wells in W'indficld and Buf
falo township. This they aro compelled to do.
as their leases arc running out. They intend
drilling the wells, and will shut them in uutll
they want tho ga.
A Pleasant Surprise at McCurdy.
McCurdy Contrary to expectations,Palmor
No. 2 got the sand this afternoon, and a special
to The Dispatch to-night says the well Is do
ing 75 barrels au hour. H. McClintoce.
Objections to the Iturdlck Bill.
rSPECIAL TELEGRAM TO IU DISPATCH.
Oil City. Feb. 16. A meeting of tho inde
pendent refiners of this vicinltv was held here
to-day. Representative F. W. Hays being pres
ent, Tbe Burdick bill was discussed and ob
jectionable features considered. It was
shown that, if passed as introduced, it
would give seaboard "fefiners a decided ad
vantage over tbe refiners of the
interior in the matter of rates, the pipeage
cost, as contemplated by tbe bill, being con
siderably theaper than transportation bvrail
for refined. This would be likely to give re
fining an impetus at Philadelphia not pleasant
for interior refiners to contemplate, and credit
was even given tbe suspicion that this was one
of tbe objects of the bill.
A-rcsolntiontwas passed to authorize Repre
sentative Hays to otfer an amendment to the
bill, equalizing rates and removing features
objectionablo and unfair to interior refiners.
This resolution will probably be presented for
concurrence at a meeting of tho P. P. A., to be
held at Warren to-morrow.

At Here's Island.
Catlle-r-The run was somewhat larger
than lal Monday, and prices were about 10
per cent lower, for the reason that demand
was light. The arrival of the Lenten sea
son has, without doubt, lessened demand
from butchers. Kainy, mild weather had
also an adverse influence on markets. There
was an unusually small attendance of buy
ers. Choice to fancy heavy Chicago beeves

Woods' Run yards, 96 being from Chicago and
the balance from Ohio. Chicago cattle sold at
a range of 4c to 5c and Ohio's from $4 40 to
$5 75, the latter price being paid for a few prime
beeves. The cos; of supplies was a snado
higher than tbose offered last week, and while
prices here were also higher the advance was
not sufficient to cover tbe increased cost. There
were 456 bead of sheep and Iambs on sale, the
bulk of offerings being lambs. Abont 50 head
oC choice sheep, weighing 120 E", sold at 6c per
a. Lambs sold at 6c to 7c, tbe latter for a
few fancy. The number of hogs on sale was 285.
The ruling price was 4c per B.
There were abont SO loads of cattle on the
market this morning at Kast Liberty against 60
last Monday and (SS the previous week. The
chief sources of supply were Chicago,'bt. Louis
and Indianapolis. There were few Ohio cattle
on the market. Prime beeves were conspicu
ous for their absence. The offerings were for
tbe most part common to fair in quality.
Buyers were not at all plenty, and ram and
mild weather served to dopress markets which
opened slow at a shade lower Drices
than last week on all grades ex
cepting primes, which were steady at
former orices. The few primes offered were
sold at'retail. Prime 1.300 to 1.600 B beeves

for veal calves was $6 25 to 0 76.
Sheep and Lamb 3 There were about 14 car
loads on the market, against 8 loads last Mon
day. Tbe proportion of choice stock in
the offerings was small, and for these
higher grades markets wero steady,
with So 50 as tbo top price for prime

The range for limbs was Jl 75 to 6 50 and

about 20 loads on sale against 30 loads last
Monday and 60 tbe week before. Market firm

Wheat Breaks on Free Selling, bnt Recovers
Some or the Loss Corn Firm and
Oats Steady Provlsiops
Dull and Heavy.
CHICAGO Hutchinson was selling wheat,
corn, oats and provisions, and his was tbe dom
inating local influence. In wheat tho smaller
decrease in tbe visible supply than tbe year be
fore and heavy rains in California were the
bearish features; tbe predicted cold wave and
strong European markets were the chief feat
ures having an opposite tendency.
Fluctuations in May were confirmed to 97
97casthe highest for tbe first hour. After
touching 98c there was a break on free selling
to 9797c, but there was little recovery be
fore the close.
Corn was generally rather firm except dur
ing tbe break in wheat, when it sold off some
what in sympathy. Therawa3 no nc.vs of im
portance affecting values, and local influences
governed 'the trade throughout, which was
light.
Oats were about steady. The market was
quiet, attracting little attention outside of the
local scalping crowd.
The provision market was dull andhoavyin
tone, without special cause or anything which
cropped up to-day to account for the down
ward tendency of the price". Tne receipts of
bogs were rather under previous estimates, but
there was no activity in tbe demands for them.
Thero was more than enouzb for all who
wanted anything in the line of provisions, and
at the close pork was 12c lower than at tho
corresponding lime on Saturday, having in the
course of the day been 5c lower than tbe price
it closed at; lard closing at 2Kc decline since
Saturday. The decline in ribs is 5c
