BIG BOOM IN BRICK.
L'annfaclnrers Will Hold an Import
ant Meeting Here To-Day.
W03DEBFUL OUTPUT OP A TEAK.
ConaellsTille Strike Took an Interesting
Tarn Yesterday.
MISCELLANEOUS IXDDSTBIAL ITEMS
There Trill be an important meeting of the
Western Pennsylvania Brick Exchange 10
day in this city.
At the last meeting of the Exchange an
attempt was made to increase the price of
brick from 57 50 a thousand to 8. There
was not a full representation present, and by
some pretty lively hustling by the opponents
of the movement, a motion for the increase
W3S prevented from passing. Tuere were a
number at the meeting, however, that held
the opinion that the immense increase in the
demands for their product would justify the
flight advance aimed at, and it is likely the
tame attempt will be repeatedjto-day. .
On this point a manufacturer said yester
day: "In no branch of building materials
have prices remained stationary so long as
they have in our business. "Where we re
ceived orders for thousands a few years ago,
-e are now called upon for millions. There
is scarcely a brick manufacturer in the city
that lias not been compelled to increase his
capacity and consequently his expenses,
but the prices are compelled to remain the
Eame."
The Brick Trade Never So Good.
Edward JIcGraw, of J. A. McGraw &
Brothers, said:
"I do not know whether prices will go up or
not. I was at the meeting when tho unsuccess
ful attempt was made to raise them, and I
know the business never was oo flourishing as
it lias been during the past j ear. and as the in
dications are for the next jcar. Our association
lias just been in existence a year now, and we
claimed to have accomplished a great deal in
that time. We have secured for membership
all the leading local manufacturers, and will
sues be in a position to control the brick mar
ket. "Our reports show that 84,000,000 bricks were
sold in Fitt.-burg last ear. and at the present
late the output fur tho next 12 months will
reach, n not exceed. 123, 000.010. Our capacity
at the LiDerty Rrick Works, v. Inch is at present
one of the largest in the citv, will be increased
from a canacity of 20.000 to 40.000 a day in order
to supply tho gradually increasing demand,
mostlj fiom the mills, which seem to never get
through making improvements. That will
make ou- capacity about 13,000.000 a J ear. and
lam sure we are sold four months ahi ad.
This wonderful consumption of brick led to
an invc-ti ratmn of the improvements under
way and the disposition made of this product.
It was found that while countless houses of
brick and stnnc are being erected, the greater
portion of the material is going into mill
improienients.
One Place TVliere a Million TVent.
The Hainesworth bteel Works used over
2.660,W)0bricks.lastyearin the erection of anew
blooming mill which, when completed, will
more than double their capacity. They have
ordered 200,0v0 more to use in a new con crtlng
mill.
Carnegie, Phipps A Co. have used many mill
ions in building new additions to and improv
ing their various mills. A large number went
snto the new converting mill at liraddock. The
uupiovenicnts at both the upocr and lower
mills in Lawrenceville consumed millions. This
firm uses more po-sibly than any other firm in
the citj, for the reason that they are constantly
making improvements of some character.
Frauenlieini A Vilsack have ordered 5.000,000
lor the addition to the Iron City Breweiv, and
a score of other firms might be mentioned that
have placed large orders to be filled within the
next lew mouths.
Booth fc Flinn are probably the largest manu
factuiers in the city and arc the only ones who
hae been compelled to reduce their capacitv.
Some if their works have been abut down
oning largely to a falling off of city work, ami
the.) hare been compelled to direct their atten
tion to other sources.

The Tanners' Trust Refuses to Let the Pub
lic Into Its Secrets.
The Committee on Organization of the Tan
ners Trust met at the Duqucsne yesterday to
finish some details that had been neglected.
President James D. Callery. Secretary William
A. Sloonej, of Columbus, Ind.. and ex-Stato
fcenator George Jl. Anderson, who is Commis
sioner of the trust, were among the number
present.
Mr. Anderson referred the reporters to Secre
tarj Jlooney for information, but that individ

had nothing to sa. and would not be ques
tioned, hince the organization of the associa
tion, which is devoted to the interests ot har-Tse-s
leather manulacturcrs, the membership
has been constantlj increasing, and makers of
other kinds of leather have applied for admis
sion. The general feeling is to admit all tan
ners who put up the collateral and agree to
obey all the rules. The capital stock repreient

No Reduction Looked for Until After tho
Coke strike Is Oier.
At the meeting of tho Pittsburg Committeo
or Freight Agents jesterday the demands of
tho Valley furnace men lor a reduction in the
coke rates were not considered. General
traight Agent Frank Dean, of the Lake Lrie
road, said the subject would not be brought up
until the coke strike was settled. The business
of the meeting was of an unimportant char
acter. The local railroad traffic is not what it should
be by a good deal, and the ageuts do not con
ceal tlii-. fact. The coke stnko is alreadv tell
log on tut tonnage, and the shutdown in the
vnllejs is helping to reauce the good record of

The Standard cooper shop in the Eighteenth
ward has been closed don n for improvements.
It is proposed to erect a number of new ma
chines for making barrels. The force in the
factory Mill be decreased, but the capacity in
creased. The machine now in use at the Jersey
City an J 15a View shops is to be tried, which
will turn out a barrel complete from the green
etave.
The company has also purchased 200 new
tank cars with a capacity of 40.000 to be used in
transporting refined oil to the leading cities.

The Executive Hoard, K. d L, Renders a
Final Decision in the Case.
Toe Executive Board of tho Knights of
Labor met yesterday in Washington. D. C,
ana rendered decision against John Phillips,
the expelled member of L. A. E00. Mr. Phil
tips' friends, it is said, claim the board was in
fluenced by a threat from U A. 300 that if
3 Jilllps was ordered to be reinstated, the
Window Glass oncers' Association would
withdraw from the Knights of Labor, and that
the matter will be appealed to the General As

ASSUMED ANEW PHASE.
The Connellsvillo Strike, Now a Week Old,
Takes a Turn Fighting Against a Re
duction Details of the situation at
Scottdale.
The strike in the Connellsville region has
assumed a new phase. The miners now
claim to be striking more against the 10 per
cent reduction than the demand of the ad
vance of 12 to 15 per cent. This fact was
brought out to-day in interviews with
local labor leaders. Acting Secretary
DeHaven said: "We are determined not to
accept the reduction proposition. The
miners thronghout the region have almost
unanimously decided against it on the grounds
that the selling price ot coke does not justify
it. We maintain that wc are entitled to an ad
vance." AVortbv Foreman McSloy talked in the same
strain. The strike at the Ft. Hill plant of W.
J. Rainey has been broken and almost a full
run was mado to-dy. Only a few
men are at work at the Paul! plant of W.J.
Rainey, however, and about one-third is being
made. The whole region is virtually
involved in the stnke. which was inaugurated
last Tuesday. The Moyer plant, the employes
of which refused to strike, and worked in de
fiance of the labor organisations, are now out
of employment by a fire Tjfuch broke out in the
shaft of that works.
The strikers had planned a fierce effort to
rorce these obstinate employes into line this
week by resorting to the unwelcome extremity
ot raiding them, in which several persons no
doubt would have been badly hurt, it is safe
to remark that Mio fire prevented them from
carrying out their designs. The strikers still
say that these 500 men must join the strike.
The fight has now been on for overa week, and
lhe strikers have not wavered at any plant save
Eaincy's, where many of them have resumed
work. It was reported that two assemblies of
strikers of the McClure Coke Company had de
cided to resume work if the labor leaders did
not force tho Kalney men to strike. Promi
nent coke operators met yesterday and had a
secret conference. None of their actions could
be learned, though it is intimated that they
may make an endeavor to break the strike.
WOKE FOE WOEKlirSMEN.
The Hospital Association Can Find Some
thing for Them to Do.
At the quarterly meeting of the Hospital
Saturday and Sunday Association yesterday, at
winch William McCreery presided. General
Agent J.ILBenham reported the distribution of
1.200 copies of the annual report, addresses de
livered to lodges, visits to workingmen in mills
etc He said the Sonthside Hospital was de
sirous of annexation, and ho suggested the
advisability of enlisting ladies to tako charge,
of contribution boxes on the street and in pub
lic buildings. The Executive Committee will
meet with ladies to take action.
Chairman McCreery suggested that working
men :iud trade unions might exercise influenco
lit Harrisburgto secure appropriations for hos
pitals, to which he said they were entitled on
account of the charitable work they did, and
the reports now showed that a large majority
of patients were treated free.
Official Vote To-Nlght.
Tho Carpenters' Conncil will meet to-night
to receive a decision on the prospective eight
hour movement, which a majority ot the mem
bers have voted in favor of entertaining.
There is considerable dissatisfaction over the
Tote, and it now looks probaole that the rnlo
governing such matters, requiring a two-thirds
vote, will be overridden.
Many Statements Denied.
Mr. P. Cunningham, of Scotland, denied yes
terday that be had been detained in New York
for violation of the contract labor laws. When
the rumor gained circulation he was sailing on
the sea. He has been brought, he says, to su
perintend the work on the $1,000,000 plant ot
the Watts Steel and Iron Syndicate at Jliddles
borougb, Ky.
Boiler Makers Will Stay.
It now seems that tho boiler makers will
change their minds and not withdraw from the
Knights of Labor. John Doyle, a member of
the assembly, is authority for the statement
that they did vote in favor ot leaving, but the
matter has since been reconsidered.
One Kind of an Advance.
About 20 men employed at the works of the
Schoen Manufacturing Company, V ood's Run,
asked for an advance in wages yesterday and
were discharged.

A Woman Protesting Against the Provisions
or Her Father's Will.
Mrs. Kate E. Turpin yesterday filed in the
Orphans' Court an appeal from the Register's
decision in admitting to probate a paper pur
porting to be the last will of her father, Robert
C. Henderson, who died October S, 1S89. The
will was dated April 24, 1SS9, and probated Oc
tober 17, 16S9, and letters testamentary issued
to C. F. McKenna, as one of the' executors.
Mrs. Turpin claims that it Is not the last will of
her fatner, because, at the time, be was not
competent to make a wilL The Court issued a
citation on the parties interested and fixed
February 2S for a hearing.
In the will in question Mr. Henderson, who
was a resident of the Tnenty-ftrst ward, be
queaths one-half of his estate to the bisters
of Mercy in charge of ihc Mercy Hospital, and
the other half to the Little Sisters of the Poor
in charge of the Home for Aged Men and
Women, ou Penn avenue. To his only daugh
ter he gave S1U0, because, he said, be was under
no obligations to her; but if sho became poor
he desired the Sisters ot the Poor, or of .dercy,
to give her a home, it she would do some work
in return. C. F. McKenna and O. M. Edwards
were appointed executors.
