Good Butcher Beeves Slroncer, and Lou Grades Advanced. SHEEP AND HOGS FAlELI STEADY Office or Fittsbtjeg Dispatch, i Wednesday. Feb. 1L There were 80 loads of cattle oo the mar ket at East Liberty Monday morning, acatnsl 6S loads the previous Moaday, and D3 the week before. About five loads have Wen received since Monday, makine; a total of 85 loads for the week. One-half of this Meek't offerings were from Chicago and the other half mainly from Ohio. Very few Indiana beeves have been coming to this niatket of late. The quality of cattle on tale this week was a shade below that of last week, but was a fair average. Markets pened slow on Monday rooming, but as the day advanced there was a de cided improvement, for the reason that there were not enough cattle at the Allegheny yards to co round. One Allegheny butcher who seldom bnys at East Liberty bought lb bead on Monday because his regular supplies had failed on him. In lb. e offerings of this week ere S to 10 loads of good 1,500 to 1,600 2 beeves, close to prime, which were sold mostly at retail. They would have found ready buyers in carload lots at So 25. The latter was tun highest price paid tun week at the East Liberty yards, by the car. One load is known to have brought this fteure. All butcher grades of cattle were stiong at last week's prices, Avhile common and low grades were active at an advance of about 10c icr cwt. 1'rcsh Cows In Better Supply. There were very few good stockers on sale. A few fairly good, weighing about 9C0 lis, were sold at S3 40 to S3 50. Fresh cows were in much better supply than last wees, and prices were well maintained, the range boing S25 to MB. Veal cahes were in moderate supply and in active demand, at a range of Cc to TVc. the latter being paid for a few extras. All offer ings of cattle were well cleared up to-day. Only a few odds and ends are left in the yards. Ihe run of hogs on Monday was lisht, there beiurr 30 loads on sale, against 45 loads th previous .Monday, and 50 tbe .Monday before. Owing to the light run markets opened active andnrong. with S3 90 to SI 00 as the top price for rinladelphlas. Later on in the day news came of an immenso run at Chicago, one of the very largest on record, and that prices Cropped to S3 45 for top'. This had the effect or w cakemng markets at East Liberty, and prices Cropped back to S3 90 as the outside. Since Monday receipts have been light, and markets jnrtially regained some of their lost strength. Total receipts of hogs during the week were less than JO load, against 70 loads lat week. Demand is principally for light hogs. Heavy weights go slow. Sheep and Lambs There have been, all tnld, about a dozen loads on sale this week. Gen eral qualitj below par. CHICAGO Tho wheat market lost the buy ing snap which characterized it yesterday after noon, and tho bears succeeded in depressing the price of May to 97c toward the close of the session, and it rested" at the lowest point of the day and c lower than on the day before. There were no particular features in the trad ing beyond the steady support which a few heavy traders holding bearish opinions gave to the side they advocated and the lukewarmness of the adherents of the rival faith. Cables were onlj mildly encouraging and the weather was clear and spring-like. The May delivery at the start was freely of fend at 9Sc with no buyers to speak of, but when sellers had reduced their demands to 96c and 87Jc which they did immediately, the remainder of the crowd jumped for it, and It was selling within a few seconds of the open ing a: 9SJc; a little later it was being traded in at'JsSJc Bane and antidote, both of diluted strength, were alternately administered iu the shape ot the ncw, and the subsequent fluctua tions swung slowly back and forth in a narrow range in lazv response; from OTJic to 9S9.JC was the range. Every time the price would show above 93c, after it had gradually worked off from the high point In the first hour's trading, there was enough offered to keep It from get ting above I'SKc. and on every occasion when a decline lo Blfc took place there were buyers enough to again send it back to 93c During the last ten minutes trading price of May broke to and closed at 97c The trading in corn was governed mainly by Hutchinson's (supporting orders, which ab sorbed the offerings of the crowd. Transac tions were light and the range narrow. The oats market was dull and nanow, show ing a range of less than Jicln the May luture. Wnat little-trade there was was all of a scalp ing nature. There was a good deal of activity in the pro vision marker, and weakness with free selling out by country noldeis. was the feature. The Government estimate of 50,600,000 hogs In the country on January L or ooly 1,000.000 less than at the corresponding time a' year ago, appeared to carry the conclusion to tho minds of holders that they had played into the packet s' hands loog enough. Outsiders were the sellers; pCK ers were also putting out heavier lines, and local scalping snorts gave the market the only support it received. The receipts of bogs were about as expected, and prices were reported to be lower. There was au eager selling pressure from the start, and prices suffered a heavy diminution. Beginning of Extensive Improve ments to the Hostelter Block. GRADING CALIFORNIA AVENDE. Electric Stock Works Up and Down With oat Gaining or Losing Huch. THE KEWS AND GOSSIP OP THE CITI The work of putting in a new front and otherwise remodeling the Fort Pitt Bank building, or Hostetter block, on Fourth avenue, was begun yesterday. The front will be lighter thaa the present one, more glass being used, and will be one of the handsomest in the city. The improvement of most importance to'the business public will be an elevator. rushing It Ahead. Work on California avenue is progressing as fast as the weather will permit. It is being graded on the Witmer, Oliver and Walker properties, almost to Jack's run. Nothing has been done toward bridging tho run, which is the heaviest part of the work, but this will be done the coming summer. It Is thought the road will be opened next fall. People of Bellevue arc anxiouslyawaitingthe extension of the road to that borough, to facili tate which Council has granted right ot way as required. Two of the Finest. The new building of tho National Bank of Commerce is hearing completion. Some of the upper floors are occupied. In plan and execu tion the object has been to put up a good, sub stantial business bouse that will be a credit to the city at as reasonable cost as possible. There fore the useful has been given precedence over the merely ornamentak It Is provided with all modern improvements and appliances for busi ness and comfort, and is as nearly fire-proof as possible. :The German National, in the same locality, i being hurried along as fast as possible. In describing it yesterday a gentleman said: "It is a symphony in stone; a symposium of the finest effects that can ba wrought in granite and wood br the most skillful hands." Tho cost of this building will bo about S300.000. No Place for Grumblers. Some people arc enthusiastic or nothing. They are dissatisfied with the regular course of things. If business be good they want it better. Conditions are nothing to them. They think recovery from financial depression should be instantaneous. These people are now growling because trade is not up to tho pitch of the same time last year. It is true there is no boom in anything in Pittsburg, but there is something better-substantial, permanent growth, growth that inspires confidence and invites capital, growth that assures good return to investors in almost any line of activity, a safe, healthv growth that can be depended upon. Pittsburg is full of opportuni ties to capitalists at home aud abroad for safo aud profitable investment. tr ft Business News and Gossip. A large brick schoolhocsc on Beaveravenue, near Garfield, Bellevue. is Hearing completion. The track of the electric railroad on Brown' property, at Bellevue, is in a dilapidated condi tion. The road seems to have been permanently abandoned for want of patronage. Charles Schaeffer has purchased a lot front ing 150 feet on Atlantic avenue, and will begin the erection thereon of two line dwellings as soon at the weather will permit. At the annual meeting of the New York and Cleveland Gas Coal Compary, at the office on Wood street yesterday, the old Board of Direc tors was re-elected, as follows: John Walker, J. J. Donnell. J. T. Colvin. W. P. De Armlt, Frank Semple, J. T. Hamilton, Henry Phipp, Jr., J. Umbstaetter and W. H. Berger. W. P. De Armlt was re-elected President. Frank Sen pie Treasurer and C. L. Dixon Secretary. Shares Less Active Bulls ltule the Day in the Early Morning, Followed by Bear Balds, but Only One Change ot Note. New York, Feb. 1L The stock market was leas active to-day than for two weeks. While it was firm to strong, as nsual of late, in the foreuoon.it reacted later in the day. AU the early improvement was lost, with something in addition in most cases. The market, however, was more than usual ot late a traders' market, and the selling was of a purely professional character, the bears selling on a further agita tion of the silver question and upon an allega tion that Mr. Cammack was advising bis friends to go short of the market. Unless all reliable information is at fault there is nothing in either rumor. The day opened with some support apparent in many of the leading shares, but later this was withdrawn, and the bears attaoked several specialties, with the effect of weakening them. The Oregon Improvement Company bonds which have been offered to stockholders are being taken up rapidly, and the receivership, it is expected, will therefore soon be brought to an end. The temner of the room in the early dealings was moderately bullish, but there was no dis position to trade, and the transactions in the m.irKct were the smallest for some time, wbic had the uual effect of encouraging bear at tacks, aud the traders fell in behind. A droop ing tendency was first noticed in Union Pacific and Atchison, which afterward spread to the entire list, and eventually the advauces of tho first hour wpre wiped out. A special attack was made upon Chicago Gas in the afternoon, and it was depressed 1 per cent to 40. trout which it recovered only a slight fraction. The changes m the rest of tbe list.were entirely insignificant, and tbe market closed dull and heavy at abuut the lowest price for tbe day, and slightly lower than last even ing, witn the exception of Chicago Gas, which is down 1M per cent. Railroad bonds were more quiet and dis played a great lack of tone and leatnre, while sympathizing closely with the transactions iu stocks. There were a few important advances, however, while tbe losses were insignificant. The total business done was only;Sl,3oU,000. Chi cago, Burlington and Northern firsts rose 2 to 103. New Jersey Junction tiists. 2 to 102. and the Virginia Midland generals 2 to 89, and the stamped bonds 3 to 90. Coal Operators Protest Against Encroach ments Upon the Channel Bridge Build ing to He Stopped A Government In lestlgation High Water In the Alle gheny Ttiver Drift. A meeting was held yesterday morning in the office of tbe Advance Coal Company. Colonel W. E. Merrill, Chief Engineer of the Ohio river, and representatives from the coal firms of Joseph Walton fe Co.. W. Y. O'Neil Coal Company, Wood !c Sons, the Ad vance Coal Company and Brown's Sons. The meeting was the result of a petition sent to the Secretary of War by the coal operators pro testing against tbe Bessemer bridge, tbe loca tion of tbe Beaver dam and the encroachments in the Pittsburg harbor. Colonel Merrill has been Instructed to investigate the complaints and report to the War Department. The river men presented a statement that the bridge was uearly a foot too low, and would seriously obstruct navigation. Tbey also pro tested against the location of the Beaver dam. They claim that if built at tbe point indicated navigation would he exceedingly dangerous, az the channel of the Ohio would be constantly shifting. Tbe most important complaint was in relation to the encroachments in the Pitts burg harbors. They presented plans showing the prescribed nautical Hues and survey show ing the present width of tbe river Colonel Merrill took the statements, and said he would immediately investigate and report them to Washington. He also intimated that he would stop tbe construction of tho Beaver bridge pending Investigation. THE WATSBS EECZTJUTO. The Allegheny Ttlver Over the Pittsburg and Western Itallroad Tracks. The highest stage reached by tho river yester day was 19 feet 8 inches and stationary, with indications of it falling slowly during the night. Tbe highest reached at Parkersburg yesterday was 24 feet 2 inches; at Cincinnati, 41 feet 3 inches; at Louisville. 18 feet 9 inches. Notwithstanding tbe stage of water, not one tow of coal has gon out, owing to the strike of the upriver miners. But once before this winterbas the Allegheny river been so high at this point as during the past few days. Yesterday afternoon It regis tered 20 feertan J was falling. Tbe engines on tbe Pittsburg and Western could barely move along the river bank beneath the Ninth street bridge without putting out their fires. The water was way orer the strip of land between tbe tracks and the river from the station to just above the bridge. The boat houses seemed to be a good distance out in the river and connection with some of them had to be made by means of skiffs. Con siderable difficulty was experienced in unload ing coal barges, owing to the high water. Harbor and Kiver News. The steamer Bedford left at noon yesterday for Parkersburg with a good trip.
