ADAMS IRON COMPANY GUTS A CHARTER Manufacturers interested in the develop ment of trade with Southern countries are to be presented with a copy of the publica tion now beine prepared by W. E. Curtis, the director of the recent International Con ference. Superintendent G. Follansbee has received tbe tallowing letter lrom Mr. Curtis: Buheau or inn Americas Republics') DErAKTMENT OF STATE, V Washington, D. C, Jan. 29. I G. Follansbee. Esq., Superintendent Chamber of Commerce, Fittsucrr. fa.: Dear Sib I shall esteem it a farorityon will furnish me with tbe names and local ad dresses of persons, associations, firms, etc, in your city or State, or elsewhere, who in your opinion would be interested in and make rood use of the publications of this bureau which are to be issued in regard to Mexico. Central and South America and tbe West Indies, as indicated in enclosed circulars. Please sub-divide addresses into the following classes, arranging those which yon esteem im portant at the bead of each class. Classes of the Addresses Wanted. First Of manufacturers interested in pro ducing articles for export to South American countnes, indicatiug the branch of manufacture in which engaged. Second Exporters, to those countries, and, so far as practicable, the branch of trade in which, and the countries with which, (hey are conducting trade. Third Persons or associations actively in terested in promoting trade with these coun tries. You will place this bureau under obligations if you will exercise special care in the prepara tion of the list, confining it to those who especially would be interested In promoting trade with the countries indicated, or who would make practical use of the reports. Respectfully, W. E. Curtis, Director. Value of the International Conference. Superintendent Follansbee is nowengaged in preparing a reply, and is surprised at the number of local firms that have well-established trades in the South American countries. The great portion of the trade is of long stand ing, although some of it has been secured as a result of the international conference. Thus the value of the conference Is shown, not only to the countries of South America, but the manufacturers of North America, as welL Among the Arms that Mr. Follansbee will in clude in his letter to Director Curtis are Car negie. Phipps &. Co., who have long since been shipping steel rails to the South; Oliver & Rob erts, who export a large amount of wire; H. K. Porter & Co who send locomotives to almost all of the Southern countries; tbe National Tube Works, which fnrnishes pipe" for well known oil companies: A. Speer & Sons, manu facturers of plows ana agricultural steeli Hut bard & Co., axes, saws and shovels; Hussey, Binns fc Co, shovels, spades and scoops; War den fc Oxnard, oil; Hostetter fc Co., bitters: Macbeth t Co.. Atterbury fc Co., Rochester Tumbler Company, McKee t Bro;., Ripley A Co, and Cunningham Co., class manufact urers. There are many other firms more or less in terested in the derelonment and maintenance of the Southern trade, and before many months can be classed with the list of exporters. Whether or not all the cities in the Union which were visited by the International Con ference derived an equal benefit with Pitts burg, Mr. Blaine can have the consciousness of having engineered a scheme. the value ot which to Northern manufacturers and commercial tradesmen cannot be estimated. A Very Voluminous Report. The report which Mr. Curtis desires to send out is in book form, and comprises several vol. umes. The history of the attempt to hold an International American Conference, dating from IKS to 16S8. is given, in connection with important State papers relating to the matter. Then beginning with tbe act providing lor the conference, passed May S4, loSS. Secretary Bayard s invitation, and Its acceptance by the various countries of South America, a com plete report of all correspondence dnring the preparations for the conference, all the visits made by the distinguished visitors, and full ac counts of all meetings held and tbe speeches delivered, and the final windupin Washington. The book is intended as a reference for man ufacturers, and as such will prove of great value to those Interested in Southern trade. A "WONDERFUL OUTPUT. The Pig Iron Production Exceeded Ten Million Tons Last Tear. Just now when the furnacemen are com plaining of a dull trade, the main points in the report of George Swank, of the American Iron and Steel Association, received in this city yes terday, will be studied with interest. The total production of pig iron last year was 10,307.028 net tons, against 7.603.612 tons in -1889, or an increase of over 21 per cent. The prol uucuou 01 ioot was anout i per cent over that or lSbS. The joint -increase for the last two years has therefore been about 3S per cent. The production for 1K90 was greater tor the brst time than that of Great Britain, having exceeded the European rival by about 1.200 000 tons. ' Had it not been for the closing of the fur naces in December, caused partly by the great coal strikes of Alabama and the financial strin gency, the output would have been much larger. THE BOARD MAKES NO SELECTION. Mayor Gonrley Doesn't Think the Inspection Was Thorough. QUITE A NUMBER OP BID3 OPENED The Department of Awards has shifted the responsibility of the selection of a poor farm from its shoulders tcCouncils. Four of the farms out of the 28 inspected were recommended in the report of the vari ous chiefs and the Mayor. Now the final selection may either be referred to a special committee in conjunction with the Board of Awards, the Committee on Charities, or simply back to the board itself. The Department of Awards met at 3 o'clock yesterday with Chief Elliott in the chsir. The report of the investigation simply stated that all the necessary forms had been carried out but owing to the lim ited time tbe examination of the various sites offeredlhad not been as thorough as it should have been. Out ot the twenty-eight sites ofiered the following were recommended as tbe most desirable: The Joseph E. Beale farm of 300 acres, at Harris station in Harrison township, lor $500 an acre is asked. Farm of H. W. Alexander, containing 200 acres at $600 per acre, situated near Hulton station in Plum township. The One With Most River Front. "William Glew's farm at "Wylie station on the Pittsburg, Virginia and Charleston Railroad, in Jefferson township. It con tains 250 acres, and the price is 5000 per acre. The board states that this farm has a greater acreage ot river bottom than any of the other sites offered. Land of C. A. Dravo, at Buena Vista station, on the McKeesport and Youghiogheny Rail road, in Elizabeth township. This tract con tains 243 acres at 83J1 per acre. Mr. Brown moved tbe report be referred to Councils, and the motion was passed unani mously. Tbe meeting was then adjourned. This action was partially explained by the fact that a confercnen of thn hoard wan hpiri in Chief Brown's office just before the open session. What transpired corld not be learned. jiayor uonney says no decision was made bo cause tbe members did not want to take the responsibility after such a slight inspection. The Board of Awards reassembled with Mayor Gourley in tbe chair Immediately after the adjournment, and proceeded to open tbe bids for remodeling No. 1 patrol station, also for wagons, carts, harness, oush brooms, sweepers, engines, crusher, wedge gates, etc On two affluent and two Influent wedge gates the bids ranged from J1.74S 15 to S3.827. Four wagons and nine carts were wanted. On wagons the bids range from $105 to $135 apiece. Carts were quoted at from $42 to 63. The prices ot cart harness were from $28 to $33, and on wagon harness, $52 to $61 75. Other Bids That Were Opened. Bids were opened for a 30-horse power boiler, a 25-horse power engine and a Brennen stone crusher. The proposals on tho enginr and boiler ranged from $803 to $1,171, and on th. stone.ctusher $1,575 and $2,100, On new brooms for the Brooklyn street sweepers the lowest bid was for $20 and for refilling the brooms S14. New two-borse street sweepers were offered tor $365 and one-horse sweepers $300. A bid of 8450 apiece for four street sprinklers was tho only one that was received. The bids for remodeling tbe No. 1 Police Patrol station were as follows: William Kerr's Sons. $4,787; Siirrannd A Klenke, $4,875 86; Bauersinltb. $5,369: Magee 4 Reesmeyer. $6,853. On typewriters there were two bids of $S0 and $125. Oats for the Department of Public Works was quoted at from 54 cents to 48 cents per bushel. At tbe request or Chiefs Bigelow and Brown, the awarding of the contract was held over for a few days. WHX STAHD HO H0HKEY11TG. Braddock Conndlmen Going After Natural Gas Companies. Braddock Councilmen will not stand any monkeying by the natural iras companies, and tbey propose to go alter the Braddock Fuel Company, a branch of the Philadelphia Gas Company, in a style that will bring matters to a head ere long, if anything will. The Braddock Fuel Company has notified its consumers that tbey must accept mete'rs from it, and pay $5 for tbelr use. As in other places, tbe price of gas has been increased. Consumers are al6o re Quired to deposit $10 for performance of the contract. Now a resolution was offered in the Council on Monday night looking to the enaot ment of an ordinance requiring tbe Braddock Fuel Company to pay into the borough treas ury $25 for every meter it requires its custom ers to use. and one of the borough officials says that in the present temper of the town he has no doubt it will prevail, and that the comnany will find its meter profits sharply pared down. This gentleman says that the'borough in its eagerness to get fuel gave the company pretty much Its own way in the matter, even before It bad been decided that it possessed the power of eminent domain, but be says that as the fuel has became a luxury, and tbe company is in sensible to the kindly feeling shown by its con sumers, all sentiment has evaporated, and hereafter dealings with the corporation will be on strictly bnslness principles, and the golden rule constrned as meaning "Do unto others as you are done by." HAVE TO GET A MOVE OH. Only a Few Days Left for Liquor License Applications. The number of liquor license applications re ceived in tbe Clerk of Courts' office is now 955, and five of them were registered by Council man George H.Treusch in very nearly the same number of minutes yesterday af ernooo. If the 2,200 expected get there on time they must come the remainder of this week at the rate of 300 a day. Worn Out and Not Fit for Anything. Mr. A. Danner: Dear Sir.
