Orphans' Court Decides That She It Sot
Mrs. Kennedy's Child.
TESTL'RDAI IX TUE COUNTY C0TJET8
An odd case was concluded yesterday in
the Orphans' Court. The manner ot its
ending leaves a cloud of mystery surround
ing tbe origin of a beautiful little girl of 10
years.
About a year ago Mrs. Flora Kennedy, a
widow, died leaving two grown up children
and an adopted daughter 9 years of age.
The Safe Deposit Company was appointed
administrator of her estate, an J a small amount
of money 'was realized from tbe sale of her
jewelry, most of which was aiamond rings.
It was understood that there were but two
children to divide tho money between, but
before tbe distribution was made the Sale De
pout Company received an Intimation that
there was a third child. Their informant as
serted that he was credibly informed that the
little cirl raised by Mrs. Kennedy was her own
daughter. When the company inquired into
matter thev ascertained that the child had been
tafcen from the Poor Farm and given to Mrs.
Kenredv when but 2 weeks old. A claim on
behalf of tbe child was then made to court for
a sh.u e of the estate.
At the hearing it was testified to that Mrs.
Ke3ued' sister bad obtained the child as
Mated at the Poor Farm, and that Mrs. Ken
nedy had a recommendation from tbe Mayor of
Pittsbu- that she bo allued adopt a child.
The family physician of Mrs. Kenneuy testified
that she had 'not siren birth to a child that
would be the aire ot the one in question. The
bale Deposit Company then offered additional
testimony they had secured train their inform
ant. It was to the effect that he had reason to
believe that the child was the daughter of him
self ard Mrs. Kennedy. She had been left in
the Allegheny Parks, here she was found, and
sent to tLe Poor Farm.
There was no evidence to back up these state
ments, and .Mrs:. Keunedy's sister testified that
when she obtained tho infant at the Poor
Farm its ical mother was there and with tears
in her eyes kissea the baby goodby.
The Court decided the case against the child,
the testimony all being one sided, and tbe little
one, whose paternity was in dispute, was taken
in charge by tbe son and daughter of Mrs.
Kennedy, with whom sho has been living. She
is a beautiful child and completely won the
hearts of all in the court room.

Judge Ewlne Thinks S10.000 Tery Liberal
for Personal Injuries.
Judge Ewing handed down an opinion yester
day in the case of William Hamilton against
the West Penn Railroad, wherein the plaintiff
was awarded $16,000 for injuries received in a
wreck on the road last August, at Sarver sta
tion, and on which a motion for anew trial was
made. The opinion of Judge Ewing is on this
motion. After alluding to the plaintiffs evi
dence of neglect in allowing rotten ties to stand
as a part of a bridge where tbe accident oc
curred, and also to that of tho defendant in
showing no negligence, the judge savs: The
verdict for S16.000 is excessive much the
largest verdict rendered In this county in an
action for personal injury though we do not
consider the case as presenting by any means
the most serious injury suffered. We think
110.000 Is a liberal allowance. That will be a
larger verdict than any before permitted to
stand in tMs county for personal injury."
An order is then made to allow a new trial if
the S10.000 is no: accepted.

SCHOOL ROOM NEWS. f
IirvrtATioKS, bearing a cut representing
yonng cook all ready for duty, will be Issued
to-morrow by Secretary Reisfar to the recep
tion and graduating exercises ot tbe B class of
the Public Cooking School next Saturday from
3 to 4 p.m. Tho exhibit, to accommodate all
tbe visitors, will be placed in the ball of the
Grant School. On the 2nd of February anew
class of 75 pupils from the Birmingham, Morse,
Knox, lit. Albion. St. Clair. Allen, Humboldt,
Luckey and Peebles will take up the course.
Owing to tbe popularity of tbe cooking schools
in Pittsburg the Industrial Committee will
soon have to establish another one. It
will likely be situated on tho Southslde,
as the pupils from this district live
at very Inconvenient distances from the Public
Cooking School on Grant street. In a city that
furnishes such thorough graduates as tbe nor
mal High Sclmol does it has been asked why a
course of cooking taken at the Public Cookiug
School should not be a necessary part of tbe
training fitting tbe graduates to fill tbe posi
tions in the domestic schools which mnst be in
time numerous in the city, and besides giving
an avenue to women that is not yet much en
croached on. Western cities always send to Bos
ton when tbevneed a cooking-teacher. Why
no: have a cooking school to train teachers for
tho work in Pittsburg?
There was an exceedingly enjoyable enter
tainment awaiting the teachers of Steps 1, 2
and 3, when they assembled at the City Normal
School on Miller street", yesterday, for the
Division Institute. It was furnished by Miss
E. H. Fundenhurg. of the Osceola School,
Twentieth ward, and 24 of her pupils whose
average age was less than 6 rears, 'lhey all en.
tered school for tbe first time last September.
The little folks were put through a most inter
esting drill, aud many of their childish' remarks
convulsed tbe large audience with laughter.
A meetiso of the Mincrsville School Board
is called for next Friday evening, when an ef
fort will be made to break the deadlock over
tbe election of a representative to the Central
Board ot Education. Mr. J. N. McMillan, the
pre-ent representative, has been on the Com
mittee on Teachers aud Salaries for a number
of years and has always been such -a firm
friend ot tbe teachers that they would reluct
antly see him retire.
Dr. Hekziian on Friday delivered a lecture
on "Physiological Effects of Alcohol" to the
grammar room pupils of the Humboldt School.
A course of valuable lectures, to be given by
well-knovn physicians, will be semi-monthly
leatures at the school hereafter.
Miss Blanche Cooper, late of the First
ward school, Allegheny, left, Thursday for
Denver, where she has secured an enviable po
sition as secretary to a large firm.
The news that next Friday is par day will
create a glad flutter among the ' Pittsburg
teachers for the week.

A Delightful Entertainment In Honor of
Bobble Burns' Memory.
The first aunnal conversazione of tbe Burns'
Club, of Wilkinsburg, in celebration of the
birthday of Robert Burns, took place Wednes
day evening at Lohr Hall, on Wood street.
Over 300 admirers of the beloved poet of Scot
land w ere present. The entertainment, from
beginning to end, was one of tbe most success
ful and best conducted affairs ever held in
Wilkinsburg. and the assembly one in which
the immortal Bobby would have loved to join.
It was under tbe able management of Mr. A.
Wjse. Mr. -William Harris, Mr. G. McKee, Sr.,
aud Mr. D.Auderson. The programme opened
with an address by Prof. J. D. Ander
son, which was followed by a quarter,
There Was a Lad:" a song. "Jessie's Dream."
Miss Lindsay; a comic song, "That Will
be Joyful." W. Winning; 'and asnng,"Gae
Br'ng tae Me," D. Anderson. Miss H. Baxter,
the well-known elocutionist, recited tbe "Death
Bridge of Tay'" in a dramatic and pathetic
manner. Then came a song, "Comin Thro' the
Rye." by Miss J. McKeechine, and a trio,
"Willie Brewed a Pecc o' Maui," Anderson,
Winning and Crawford. Rev." S. H. Moore, of
the Presbyterian Church, delivered an Inter
esting aud humorous address which was well
received. This was followed by a song, "Mary
of Argyle." by M. Douglass. One of the must
enjoyable features of tne evening was tbe
comic songs by M. Sommerville, who responded
to four encores. The programme was ar
ranged so that rest was attainable, dancing,
singing, recitations and refreshments being
given in such a way that the
interest was kept up till long
past midnight witbont anyone growing
tired. A word for the dancers how they did
enjoy .themselves! Young and old joined in
with a will which could only be born of the
occasion. They danced to such inspiring tunes
as "Paddy O'Kaiferty.'" "Haymakers' Jig,"
"Flowers of Edinburgh," aud Scotch reels,
polkas and jigs innumerable. It is needless to
say that the first annual conversazione ot the
Burns' Club, of Wilkinsburg, was an entire
success.
The Misses Lizzie Kesler, Jennie Snyded and
Mary Hughs were tbe managers of an enjoy
able reception held in Johnstown Hall, Wil
kinsburg, Wednesday evening. A large num
ber of guests from Wilkinsburg, Braadock and
the East end joined in the merrymaking.
Dancing was the principal featnre of tbe oc
casion. The music was furnished by the Great
Eastern Italian Orchestra.
Preparations are being made by the Ladies'
Aid Society of Trinity Reformed Church. Wil
klnsbug. for a box social, to be held in Bohr
man's Hall, on Penn avenue, next Thursday
evening.
