Different Ways of Getting Around the
Marriage Laws.
A DOUBLE TALE TOLD BY A LOYEK,
Who Wonld ETen Commit Perjnrj to
Break Into Matrimony.
HIS i-LEASUEE STILL IN AXTICIPATION
Marriage license court is a great place for
ttories of all sorts. There one can fiud the
romance of lore and devotion despite tbe
bitter opposition of "fond papas," but oc
casionally a little "tale of woe" of a differ
ent description bobs np, and the unrelenting
Captain Heiber turns a deaf ear to all en
treaties af lore.
On'Thursday afternoon a young man en
tered tbe office and asked for a license. He
progressed well enough with the regular list
of, questions until he reached the one en
quiring if the lady had ever been married
before. He replied that she had, but she
had been divorced. Alter some talk he pro
duced a divorce subpoena. Captain Heiber
informed him that that was not sufficient;
he would have to ceta copy of the divorce
drcree. Iha applicant finally left the office.
Yesterday morning Clerk Heiber re
ceived an application for a license which
had been sworn to before Alderman Floch.
All the questions had been answered and it
was set forth that tbe lady had not been
married before. The names looked familiar
and upon investigation Captain Heiber saw
they were the same as given by the young
mau referred to, the preceding evening.
The apes, residence, etc., also corresponded.
He then told the messenger he would not
give the license requested.
In the afternoon the man who desired to
wed appeared in company with several
friends. He was indignant at the refusal to
give him a license and he was taken in
hands by Register Conner 'When questioned
closely about hit statement the day
be. ore, and the difference as to the
lady's previous allianes as set forth
in the application sworn to before
Alderman Flach, he said that it was another
woman. Tbe first lady, he said, lived in
Hazelwood. He was pressed closely, and
alter R number of questions, he said he last
saw her three or four Tears ago. When he
made this answer, Mr. Connor said tbe
names of the tno ladies were the same, and
he would not become a party to the perjury.
The man grew indignant at this, but was
sternly informed that he could coosider him
self lucky if he got out of the Court House
without being arrested for perjury.
The applicant set forth in his i.tatement
that he and the lady resided in JIcKeesport
He is aboul 30 years old, and the lady 28
years.
