The run of cattle at tbe East Liberty
yards was larger this week than for a month
vast, the total beinj: about 100 loads acainst
80 loads for last weec and the week before.
A larce proportion of the offerings this
week were common and low grades, and as
to strictly prime beeTes they were con
spicuously absent. A few loads close to
prime were sold at5e according to report
"With 90 loads on the market Monday morn

mission men were forced to niako concessions
on the "-tringth of unfavorable news. One com
mission man said: "I took 25c less per cwr, fur
a load of cattle on Tuesday tliau I was willinc

Iluffalii and Cincinnati all the week. An nnex
plainable fact is that Pittsburg markets for

all winter, though Onuble tbe number are
bandied at the latter place.
At tbe beginning of the week the East
Libert) hog market wastbe highest west of the
Allechenies. Xow it has found its proper level,
s-aid a leading stockman to-day: T cannot see
bow it is thit our prices here sbonld be higher
than at Buffalo, as the almost nlwajs are, for
our situation iu relation to the sources of
supply is much the same. Cattle pnees are as
a rule about the same at Uulfalo as here, but
bogs are generally highest at this point."

CHICAGO Wheat was tame to-day. There
was but little anxiety to trade and a lack ot
orders from outside. A feeling ot weakness
succeeded the confidence indicated by the price
at which the first transaction took place. The
opening quotation for May wheat were 96Ja
with sellers more numerous than bnyers at tho
pneo named. Afterward there was a decline
to 98c There were many very dnll intervals
in the tradine pl-s. The decline in silver and
the absence of any addition to the export bust,
ncss which was reported near the opening,
caused tbe market to act heavily during the
last half of the session, and there was a return
to the lowest price of the decline, 96fc for
May.
Corn was firm at the start. May opened at
52Jic advanced to 52Jc, and was steady for
some time around 52c: but persistent, al
though not very heavy, selling gradually un
dermined it, and a gradual decline set In.
The trade in oats was light and all local.
The market opened at 46Jc tor May, touchbd
40i646?Hc, and declined to 45Jc on the close,
indicating c decline as compared with tho
previous da.
Tne receipts of hogs were considertbly less
than those of tbe previous day. At the open
ing the product was easier, but at the lowest
price it was quickly picked up. It was discov
ered that tlierc was not much for sale. In ad
dition came the reported improvement in the
hoe market, and the packers again came to the
rescue and the close showed a sliebt advance.

reopls Who Think Eealty is Inflated Show

30E KEWS A!D GOSSIP OF THE CITI
The Government census of Jeannette
proper showed a population of 4.700. This
was unsatisfactory to the citizens, and a re
count was made by the Western Land and
Improvement Company. Every resident
was counted, and the result shows a bona
fide .population of 5,500. The revised
figures hare just been forwarded Io Wash
ington. There are few towns in the country that
can show as rapid progress as Jeannette.
Three years ago one family comprised the
population all w&s open farm land. A
gentleman from there yesterday said every-

S00 houses will be erected

Slow Movement in Bonds.
The bond market is rather slow, but an Im
provement is expected to follow the upturn in
business generally. Andrew Caster, a specialist
in this class of securities, said jesterday: "So
much money has been put into real estate,
loan el on call, and otherwise tied np, that
bonds are almost a drug. What demand there
is seems to no limited to tbe old-timers Ashta
bula, Panhandle, Junction, ana others of that
class which hive been tried. Investors prefer
these to street railway bonus, notwithstanding
tbey come higher. All the bonds handled in
Pittsburg have been thoroughly examined and
found to be well secured. This should inspire
confidence in them as a reliable investment."
A Strong Hacking.
, Now and then a man is found who thinks
Pittsburg real estate is Inflated. Such men are
off their base, as a baseballist would say. There
is no city in tbe country where values rest on a
more enduring basis. Of course prices advance
with the growth of the city and increasing de
mand. It would be strango if it were other
wise. Demand makes the market. Property in
New York is worth more than pronrrty In a
a rural town because there is more demand for
it, and it can be made to j ield a larger return.
This is what makes property so valuable In
Pittsburg. Every lot or pare"! of ground for
sale in or about tbe city is worth, as a general
pronositlon, all that Is asked for it. because it is
or soon will be wanted for improvement. With
this support to the market there is little danger
of a reaction.
A Chance to Invest.
Opportunities for investment are multiply
ing, the latest at band being set forth in the
prospectus of tbe Thurber-Wbyland Company,
published in this issue of The Dispatch. As
is generally known, this is one of the largest
wholesale and manufacturing groceries in the
world. For ten years the average net profits of
the business have been equal to 3 per cent per

KBW YOEK STOCKS.
The Effect ot Silver Legislation Shows It
self on Wall Street Tho Industrial
Shares the Feature of the
Day Many Declines.
New York, Jan. 14. The stock market to
day was very active in the forenoon, but be
came more quiet later in the day, and whllo
showing still a hrm to strong undertone, failed
to make any material movement in either di
rection, and at times displayed considerable
weakness in spots. The great influence in the
market was the silver legislation. Silver cer
tificates in the market to-day, on the vague re
port that the free coinage amendment had been
killed, dropped away suddenly from 107J-, to
104, but upon the announcement that tbe silver
men bad accepted the amendment, confining
the coinage to tbe production ot American
mines, a full recovery in the certificates oc
curred. The industrial stocks to-day were the great
feature of the market, being the only ones
showing any real strength throughout the day.
Thestocks of the New American Sugar Refin
ery were traded on the board to-day for the first
time, or rather, the temporary certificates
representing those stocks, the preferred selling
at 92033, and the common at 61 It maybe
noted that at tbe present high prices a great
many holders of the Sugar Trust certificates
are realizing. To this movement maybe attri
buted the check to the advance in the certifi
cates, and at times to-day positive weakness
wasshownin them. 'J hey closed unchanged,
however, after large dealings.
Wall street is showing daily that a large ac
cession of outsiders are taking part in the
speculation, and this does much to give hopes
of a continued strong and active market. In
the list of active stocks of tbe regular list to
day there was- only oue that showed any real
strength, and that was New England; but the
improvement was made in the earlv trading,
alter which It became quiet and fluctuated
within nairow limits with the rest of the list.
Chicago Gas was still very strong, and shows
amaterlal improvement this evening, notwith
standing tbe passing of the dividend. The
weak spots were Lackawanna aud Union Pa
ciflt: but even these afterward recovered the
greater portion of their losses, and, with the
rest, closed at insignificant chauges for the
day. Tbe market, after a firm opening, weak
ened, but, after many and quick changes in
temper, closed firm. Tbe final changes suow a
majority of declines, hut they are all for small
fractions, while Chicago G.s is np Z. Tennes
see Coal 2 and New England 1.
Railroad bonds showed a continuation of tbe
diminution nf the vnluino of business, the
business in all issues reaching onlv $2,047,000,
tbe tone of the market being falily tlrm,
with some weakness in spins. The Atchison
incomes were again acive. furnishing $163,000
to the total, while Northern Pacific 5 con
tributed $292,000. The final changes are almost
all tor insiL.uincaut amounts, and the few
marked advances include Lake Erie and West
ern IstS 2 to 108.
