- ; t - ' FOUE IN THE FIELD. That Jfnmber of Corporations Com peting for Homestead Traffic. SCHENLEY PAKE A TEMPTING PLAX Interviews "With Insiders Jhrow Talnable light on the Situation. THE KEWS AXD G0SS1T OF THE CITI "When the spring opens up there will be busy times about Glenwood. The recent purchase there of 36 acres of ground by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, and the issue of a bridce chaiterto Dawson Cullary, John Burns and other airectors aad owners of the Second Avenue Electric Itailway to connect Glenwood and Homestead, are subjects of much comment in and about Hazel wood and the other points named. A syndicate that spent the -whole of last season surveying a short cut railway to Homestead, in connection with the Duquesne electric road, also have a charter, and expect so span the river some distance above and give their Homestead patrons a shorter ride by 2; miles to the Court House. The syn dicate have bought land, as it could be bad, lroni Schealey Park to Brown station, and propose to leave Glenwood and its circuitous river bend out in the cold by elevating the north end ol the bridge so as to cross the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad tracks 75 feet above grade at Krown Station, ana then cross the Blown farm to Greenfield avenue by easy grade. Ihere arc 211,000 people at Homestead and the purchase by the Carncgics of the city farm, with its SO0 acres, means the extension or their works and the addition of 0,000 more to the present ronnlation. it is eight miles from the Court H l to Homestead by the shortest line of travel, and reduce this distance the irams of four corporations are now at work, namely, the Pittsburg, Virginia and Charleston Kailroad, Balti i a and Ohio Kailroad, Second'Ai i.'.ue Electric Itailway and the syndicate knonn as the Short Cut. A gen tleman not connected with cither interest said csteriay: The Baltimore and Ohio and Second Avenue Electric have evidently gone together to bridge the river and tap Homestead, but it does not inake any difference. The Short Cot road has the advantage, and will compel the Second avenue line to cet out of tlio pool or have its Ifazeluood and Glenwood bnsiness taken away Xrom it. A man that would ride over the Sec ond avenue line would immediately make up liis mind tpat it could have uo rival for its trade in either of the prosperous suburbs of Hazel wood or Glenwood. That question has been tolved. The Short Cut Itailway is surveyed ahd located along the northern line of Calvary Cemetery, and thence through the Walker and Brown estates to the river. The east line of the Walker farm leads into Johnson avenue, ami that takes jou to Simon Johnston's honse on Second avenue on a grade of not more than lour lect tu the hundred. Notwithstanding the distance from the main line of the Short Cut to fcecond avenue is three-fourths of a mile, the dtance between the Court House and Hazel wood is shortened one and a half miles by cut ting oil the great bend in the river, around which the Second avenue line must continue to travel." A gentleman who is interested in the Short Cut save bis view of the traffic question, as fol lows: "The distance saved between Pittsburg and Homestead is something over three miles, instead of two and one-fourth, as your In formant states. This road will practicaily be without a rival. It will monopolize tbeSchen lcy Park trafiic of the entire valley as far ur as Brownsville. In regard to general or evcrjday traffic, it being the shortest route from Brad dock and Homestead, lbe Short Cut will un doubtedly get the lion's sh x: of the business." C Business Xeir and Gossip. Fifty transactions in rcai estate do very well for the firs; week of the year. Things promise to be quite lively atGlen iNooii this spring. Several important deals there will be closed up s'.on. An Upward Tendency, Followed by a Re action, Causes More Excitement Than at Any Time Since the November Break Sugar Causes the Fun. New York, Jan. 12. The stock market was qnite active to-day, and f nrnished more excite ment than on any day since the great break in November, and, while the first tendency of prices was upward, there was a natural re action toward the close, considering the ma terial advance which the market has had since the first of the year, which has been practically without a setback of any kind. There was a widespread sentiment that a reaction was in c.'cr, and to-day it came, tho bulls seeming rather to favor it than to oppose it, probably uu er the idea that it would bring in fresh buying and give increased breadth to the market. The dealings in the general list, however, were completely overshadowed by those In Sugar Refineries, which were given a rise on the completion of the reorganization and the pros pective payment of the 5 pet" cent in cash. There was an extremely large and excited crowd gathered in the Stock Exchange this morning and at the sound of the gavel a scene of the wildest excitement ensued, I arse orders having been placed in the market to buy, while the shorts fairly climbed over each other to recoup their contracts. The stock had closed Saturday at 70, ard the first sale recorded tbismornin; was at 74, while higher quotations were made on different sides oPvthe crowd at the same time. The demand was so great, however, that 81 was reached before this de mand was satisfied, aud the prlco then reacted to 78. where it was maintained for the rest of the day. In the general list there was the same taking of profits, which in the afternoon lorced the list off, and whilo there were a few -specially strong spots as Chicago Gas. Northern Pacific, Missouri Pacific and silver certificate;, the grangers were weak, Atchison and Rock Island in particular, and Lackawanna also tailed behind the list. The early gains were all wiped out, thcngh there was a sport in Chicago Gas In the afternoon on the rumors ot a new bull pool in the stock, and also of the probable declaration ol a dividend. A rise of nearly 5 per cent was scored, but the realizations afterward wiped out the greater portion of the improve ment. Silver certificates were moro active than for a long time and decidedly strong, the advices from Washington giyins encourage ment to those who are hoping for a wider use uf the metal. The general list presented no special feature whatever, but slowly sagged oH during tho afternoon, and the market finally closed active but heavy at or near the lowest prices of the day and only slightly changed from the finals of Saturday. The important changes are as follows: Chicago Gas is up SJg; Silver, lx Missoun Pacific and Northern Pacific each 1 per cent, and Sugar, 7c, while Rock Island is down IK, and Lackawanna and Atchison each 1 per cent. Railroad bonds were less active than during the latter portion of last week, tne sales to-day reaching only $2,779,000, but a firm to strong tone was shown throughout the day, no sym pathy wiih the weakness in shares being dis played atany time. Almost everything traded in scored a slight advance, though the Reading incomes were weak, because of the non-pay nient of interest. The active issues were Atchi- -son incomes, with $256,000. the 4s. with $103,- uuu; the Northern Pacific as. with I3H7.UUU, and Reading firsts, with $204,000. f The marked changes were not specially numer ous, however, and most prominent were Boston, Huosac Tunnel and Western debentures, 2 to 97H; Burlington debentures, 2to 102; New Yurk, Lickawanna aud Western firsts. 2 to 130; Detroit, BayCitv and Alpena firsts, 4 to'Jj; Kvansville and Terre Haute firsts. 3 to US; Oregon Improvement firsts, 4 to 96; Peoria, Decatur and Evansville seconds, 2 ta US. Since the new constrnction of theoleo law by Pennsylvania Supreme Court, retailers are generally taking out licenses from the Government for the sale of butter imitations. The result has been that country butter, which has been depressed lor some months. Is even more in the background of late. Fresh nearby eggs are scarce and firm. Fresh Western stock is active at 28c, while Southern eggs are slow at considerably lower figures. Southern eggs coming to our markets are by no means as satisfactory as those from the West. Cheese has been stiller since the opening of the year, for the reason that retail ers, who permitted stocks to run down before stock-taking time, are now buying more freely1. Late statistics show there are 60,000 less boxes of cheese on hand in the United Statos than a year ago. Against this falling off In this coun try stands the fact that there are 60,000 more boxes of American cheese in London markets than there were a year ago. Effect of the Government Crop Report on the Grain Pits Bullish, Advices From Abroad Shorts Cover ing on the Break. CHICAGO Wheat opened very strong com pared with the weakness prevailing at the close of Saturday's session, in theinean time the Government crop report had been received, making the total of the wheat har vested in 1890 399,000.000 measuredbushels. The first sales of May wheat were made at 88c, as against 96K09(c on Saturday. The foreign ma'rkets were firm and that, with the crop report referred to, was the reason for the advance at the opening. The price of May wheat touched a figure only Jc above the lowest point reacbed during tbe crisis of the late monetary stringency. It sold at one time to-day at 96c, or 2c lower than the highest, at which sales bad been made near the opening. Tbe news was more 'bullish than bearish. The corn 'crowd wero evidentlyimpressed with a belief in tbe Government figures being an argument for higher prices, to judge from the starting figures, the May delivery opening at from 53"c to 53Jc, against 53Jc at the close on Saturday. The opening prices could bo ob tained at any other time during the day. Tbe fluctuations followed the course of the wheat market, and closing transactions were near the lowest prices of the session. Tbe longs sold oats, and as they were numer ous there was a reaction that carried tbe mar ket down to 46c for May. Swartz-llupee ana Counselman-Day led tbe selling, while Hutch inson was the prlucipal buyer. The Govern ment report was very bullish, as it showed tbe sraalUst crop ever reported by the bureau. Mav opened at 46c sold to 46c, and declined t 4Gu under the Influence of tbe selling noted above. The market then recovered to 46"4c, bnt finally closed at tbe lowest point of tlie day 16c, indicating a Jc decline as compared with Saturday's closing. Tbe provision market was active and weak under receipts of hogs estimated to number 50,000 to 55,000 bead. There were some outsido buying orders near the start which wore freely supplied by the manufacturers of the product. Baxter was a prominent seller at ono period of the session, and Fowler-Sterling were also working tbe selling side diligently. Charley Wright was reported to have dispossessed him self of a considerable line or long product. Cudahy was supposed to be covering his shorts on tbe break.
