Masiaa ;rt'S?45 THE PITTSBTJBQ- , JDISPATCHJFRI D AT, - JANUARY ;9, 1891. s ALL IS NOT HARMONY In the Rants of the Big Fire Insur ance Writers of Fittsbnrs. DISSATISFACTION IN THE CAMP, Caused by the White Lead Trnst Placing All of Its Easiness IX THE IIAXDS OF A SEAT I0KK BEOEEE All is not harmony at present iti the camp of local insurance underwriters. Most of the dissatisfied seen yesterday were rather guarded in their utterances, but one, under promise tail his name should not be used, bad this to say: "The action of four of the leading fire in surance companies having agencies in this city has given rise to a good deal of unfavor able comment amour the insurance fra ternity. It seems that the "White Lead Trust lately formed, and which embraces all the white lead concerns in the city, has can celed all the fire insurance on the plants here and replaced the same through a New York broker, the sitae being placed with a syndicate- formed hyjtbe 'Phoenix,' of Brook lyn; the 'Phoenix, of London; the "Coin ruercisl Union," of Philadelphia, and the 'London, Liverpool and Globe." All four of these companies have authorized agen cies who are presumed to have entire con trol of the business written here. A stand ing rule of the Board of Underwriters, we understand, precludes agencies here from paying a commission to Hew York or other outside brokers on all business legitimately bclooging to this field, and this action of the companies named in ignoring the usual methods and courtesies of the business, and taking the entire lead business, at one swoop, from our local agencies, that have heretofore con trolled it, is a decidedly new feature of the trust business, and, if continued iu the same manner by ail other trust combines, will ltad to a loss of all the fire insurance on similar concerns in the city. Threats of a Kind of Hoycott. " number ot insurance men feel that an irjustice has been done the general business ami bate resolved to discontinue all exchange business with the companies named and decline to renew on expiration auv lm.siuc.ss now writ ten t them. What may be the result of such action remains to be seen. It is suSiccnt to say that in-uracce men. other than thotc represent ing itie four companies named, hate no hesita tion in lcrcibl expressing themselves agJtbt it. Oce agent .ays if thee four companies Je Mre to enter into a comDinatiou to urite all the trust business In the country, they hd Vef.er retire from the local busiue'ss alto-g-tbrr. The 'jumbo' business, as it is called, has never been popular with the insurance frater nitv, nor has tbe experience of the companies wrifng snch business been very satisfactory, either to themselves or the assured. It is a. mat . r of no little surprise to see the PDC2 lix,' ut ooklyn, trying it again alter her former expen -nee." A number of peonle said by this informant to be ageneved were sought. J. W. Arrntt did not have much to say. but lie looked as though lie might say considerable if disposed to do so. Ue smiled when asked if. as alleged, the local agencies of the '"Big Four" had been seen and placated for allowing a Ken York broker to write the business over their beads. Uc said it rook away sumo business that he had lately possesed. V dliaui Jones was not in his office, and a clerk denied any knowledge of the metier. Not Regarded as Very l'alatablo. Thomas D. Kellar, Manager of the German Insurance Company, of Sew York, said as he was not individually concerned, the matter ', bad not been brought to his attention, but, of i course, it could not be regarded by them as i palatable. John D. Biggert, local agent of ttie "Phoenix, of Loudon, one of tne "Big Four." said be had been sick and knew nothing of the arrangement. William G. McCandless. of the "Commercial Union." of Philadelphia, made light of tbe matter, stating it was a tempest in a teapot and not ortb talking aboat. Mr. Kennev. of Edwards & Kenney, of the London, Liverpool and Globe, talked m'ageneral way. liUeone who viasou the inside and not under tbe necessity of putting on sackcloth and ashes. He admitted that tbe arrangement was much of the pattern of which complaint was made, but appeared to think there would not be so much friction as anticipated iu some quarters. lie said the placing of the Insurance bad been put into the bands of a broker in New York, and he could ulace it to suit him self iu the bauds ufi, or 40 times 4 companies, as he saw fit. The standard Oil Company is snpposedby tome to be the power that directs tbe business. A HERO OF MANY BATTLES. Death of Captain swards, 'Who Fongut in Two Wan. Ladles of the Pittsburg and Allegheny Aux iliary of the National Indian Association Denounce the Treatment of the Bed Men The Agents Are Blamed. The Pittsburg and Allegheny Auxiliary of the National Indian Association held its monthly meeting yesterday afternoon at Uo. 49 Stockton avenue, Allegheny. Ow ing to the fact tnat it was a day of pray er in many of the churches the attendance was small. The President ot the association, Mrs. Pressloy, presided and conducted the de votional exercises. Then she asked the pleas ure of the rseoting as to any action that should be taken relative to tbe Indian troubles. After some discussion it was decided that it would be advisable to wait until word was re ceived from tbe Central Association defining tbe course that should he pursued. In the dis cussion upon this subject Miss Pressley blamed tbe Govern ruent for its choice of Indian agents, characterizing them as "wicked, unholy, heathenish agents." She deprecated tlio open ing of hostilities, and thought it little less than barbarous that the "poor creatures, driven al most to starvation, should be deprived of their guns upon which they depended to shout game." " Mrs. M. F. Hntcbins said: "It was murder ous to turn tbe Uotcbkiss guns on the poor, defenseless Indians;" wbi'o Mrs. J. R. Gregg believed that tbe Indians sbonld be allowed to hold their ghost dances; that it injuredno one, and that in tbe end tho Indians wouldsbe more satisfied and peaceable. Several other similar opinions were expressed. A letter was received from Congressman Bayne In which be assured tbe association that lienoulddo all In his power to prctcnt the passage of the bill before Congress for tbe re moval of the Utes from Southern Colorado. A letter was also received from Miss Emma H. Do Knight, ot the Indian School at Chilocco, Ind. T.
