THE LAST SESSI0H.
How the Stock Exchange Wound Up Busi
ness for tho Year.
As there was no hungering and thirsting for
local stocks yesterday, very little business was
transacted. Sales were 8 shares of Electric at
13K. and 20 Central Traction at 19.
1 ho full list was called, bat. as the "boys"
had no orders, they were afraid to bid, lest they
should be bit, and asa result few figures were
put on the board. As stated yesterday, the
j ear's record shows losses from fractions to
points in nearly everything on the list except
bank shares.
An attempt was made after the second call to
adjourn, and the question was put to vote, bnt
there was so much merriment that the result
could not be ascertained, aud the afternoon
call became a necessity.
High jinks was the feature of the afternoon
session, little attention being given to business.
During the progress a game of football w as
played with Captain Barbour's store-pine hat.
It was af terwad burned, and around the flames
the crowd performed a scalp dance. Several
oiber head coverings were badly battered.
Captain Barbour severed his official connec
tion with the Exchange in a few happy words,
which "brought down tho house." Henry M.
Long then moved a vote of thanks to the retir
ing secretary It was unanimously adopted.
This closed ihe last session of the Pittsburg
Exchange for 1S9A.

Coal Stocks,
Ntw York, Dec. 31. Considering that this
was the last day of the year the stock market
displayed a good deal of strength on a fairly
acthe business, and money was comparatively
eas) all through the day. The failure of Bate
man A. Co. had no effect other tbau a senti
mental one.
The inclination of the bears and trade was to
follow up their advantage of yesterday this
morning, and opening prices were iu many
cases lower than last night's figures, while
special pressure was brought upon a few
stock", with the result df establishing further
fractional losses in the early trading. There
was, however, an evident effort to pick np
stocks at the concessions, and the temper of the
market underwent a sharr) change for the bet
ter before the end of the ftrst hour. Lacka
wanna aud other coal stocks were all promi
nent in the advance, aud the Grangers were
not far behind, and the buying In under tho
lc caused sharp gains in both Delaware "and
Hudson and Omaha common. Sugar Refiner
ies also, showed marked strength, and to a les
ser desrree oil the leading stocks, including St.
Paul, Union Pacific, Louisville, Atchison and
Northern Pacific
The trading, however, failed to show any
special feature outside of the shafp rise Iu
Lake Erie aud Western in the last hour. The
buying continued right up to the close, which
was dull but firm at or near the best prices of
the day.
The final changes are almost invariably ad
vances, and Colorado Coal is up IJrf; Missouri
Pacific. lJi; Louisville and Nashville. C,
C, L. & bt. L., Rock Island. Sugar and Tennes
see Coal, each 1 per cent, and Lackawanna,
which sold ex-dividend of I J per ceut, t ose 1
per cent in addition.
Railroad bonds again showed a moderate
amount of animation with a strong tone, and
many of the active bonds scored material im
provement. The sales reached $hob5,O00, of
which $137,090 were in Reading firsts. 1 he ad

Lumber.
This trade is now at ifs quietest time for the
year. Volume of trade, according to moderate
estimates, has been fully one third larger this
year than last or any previous year, and the
outlook for another good ysar is considered by
lumbermen as good as it has ever been. Haid
woods have advanced slightly in price the year
past, but other woods are unchanged. ,

Chicago, Dec 31. Nearly the entire

a comatose state to-night. 'Throughout
the West and Southwest a gigantic
wet blanket of . mist, hundreds of
miles , in extent, almost stifled
every throb of electricity, aud the wires
stretching from city to city were literally
sodden and lifeless To the last a blizzard'
was overturning poles and snapping the
metal cords holding far separated com
munities together. Scores of tele
giaph operators lay helplessly at
their tables in this citv, watching' for a
chance click of their souudeis, or fingering
mechanically the adjustments of motionless
relays. All chief operators were iu dismay.
According to the oldest veterans, such a
widespread condition of paralysis was un
precedented sincetue invention of the tele
graph. The first symptoms of the gradually
widening stoppage of all electric communi
cations were first noticed south of Louis
ville, and yesterday the trouble had grown
to such proportions that the usual makeup
of long circuits had been completely aban
doned, and a curious patchwork of round
about toutes substituted for the more im

LIJJE STOCK REVIEW.

The Closing Werk One of tho Best of
the Year for Cattle.
PROPORTION OP GOOD STOCK LARGE
At East Liberty lards, and Markets Active,
- at an Advance.
SHEEP HIGHEE AM) SWINE STEADY
Office of the Pittsbcbo Dispatch. )
Wedsesday, Dec 31. (
The last week of 1890 proved to be one or
the best of the year for shippers of live stock
to our local markets. Prices realized were
the highest for many months "Bast, both at
the Allegheny and East Liberty yards, and
general quality of cattle was much above
late average. All the past year there has
been scarcity of smooth, light, butcher
cattle, weighing from 1,100 to 1,200 pounds,
the kind our markets call lor. Prime
beeves have, for a year or two past, been an
unknown quantity in our markets. It
seems that shippers have mended their wavs
and consigned an unusually large nnmberof
desirable cattle to our local markets
tliis week, and buyers, who were pres
ent in full force, responded by paying
cheerfully the advance, which was maintained
all along the line. The run of cattle at the Kast
Llbeftv yards varied very little this week from
last. Last v.eck, however, demand was light,
as turkey was on top, and prices failed to ad
vance, though supply was little more than half
the latn average. Total Teceipts last week were
about 75 loads.
Good fo Prime Beeves.
On Monday morning market opened with 70
loads on sale, and about 10 loads have been re
ceived since. There was an unusually lirge
proportion of good to prime beeves in this
week's offerings. At least 20 carloads were
good, and came in tho main from Southern
Ohio. A few loads, averaging from 1,500 to
1,000 pounds in weight, were hold at Sctoor,
the latter being tlie highest price paid.
The same quality of Deevos were -oc
to SO; per cwt. loner a week ae;o. Tne market
may be quoted from 15c to 30c higher tlian it
has been of late. Common cattle, which au
vanced the least, were of slow sale. There uas
a good Inquiry for stockers. but supply was
verv light. Tho run of cows and calves was
light and markets firm, and prices were better
than have ruled of late. Good vealers were
strong at 6c to 6c per pound. Tbe advance in
cattle this week about corresponds with ad
vauce of prices at Chicago.
Sheep and Lambs.
The run has been very light, not above half
the late average. Not over 10 loads
were offered, airaiust SO loads last week.
The light supply is acconnted for by
the heavy snows through sections from
which our, supplles come. Owfng to ligbt sun
ply markets have been firm all tbe wcok at 25u
per cwt. lilgbertlian last vcek.
lliero were 60 loads of hogs on sale Monday
morning against 45 loans the previous Monday.
Market opened steady with $3 90 .is the top
price for Fbiladelpbias. Tuesdav's market
was not so active, as uuility of offerings were
not up to those of Mondtv. This morning
there were but 3 loads on sale, and tire top of
the marker ranged from S3 70 to 53 80.

Tho supply of cattle being light and a good
attendance of buyers, the market opened up

Active and Strong Markets
From All Points.
CHICAGO Tbe wheat market opened weak
and lower under the influence of the rain and
the fiilnre reported from New York of tbe
Wall street firm of Batcnan Brothers. Tbe
opening price for the May delivery was STJgC,
with a few sales at 9c, and one or two trans
actions at 07c Tbere was a good demand at
the decline and an Immediate advance, which
at the end ot the first ten mlbutes, caused some
of the sellers at the start to bny b tck at 93c tho
wheat they Had sold at theopenlncfor97c
The advance at this point bumped against tbe
call price, and a moderato reaction occurred.
The cables were even stronger In tone than
they were yesterday.
Ihe corn market was strong under the influ
ence of the damp weather, which will, ot course,
lessen tho pronortion of No. 2 in tbe dtily re
ceipts. Toe provision market was active and
strong. Tbe receipts of bogs were far from
answenrje tbe extravagant expectations In
dulged in by some of the operators yesterday.
