There were 135 loads on sale lst week and 1!30 loads the week before. Christmas times are seldom or ever good times tor staple meats. The strong incli nation of consumers toward turkey, oysters and game uniformly curtails demand for beef, pork and mutton. Recognizing this ruecedent, and in obedience to advices from commission men, shippers have forivarded notalovc one-half their UMtal quota this week. Quality of this week's offerings was considerably above late average. Fully ore-third of the oilcrincs were good to prime bre e. a larger proportion ot tins trrado than his bpen received tr months past. Tho only explanation of the change In feeling since tho previous afternoon was the somewhat cold weather, which is considered bad for the wheat plant in the absence of snow. Another and perhaps more influential factor was tho impression which would naturally be uppermost in tho minds of the local fpeeula tors under tho circumstances of the recent ma terial decline, that shorts, which may have been put out around the bottom or yesterday's decline, would be considered dangerous to the holders in the event of anything occurring to encourage any buying. Improvement the Object of the Large Ma jority of Ileal Istate Buyers. , THE NEWS AND GOSSIP OP TUB CITi Next week the yearly settlements will begin. 'It is believed the people are well prepared to meet their obligations, and no serious trouble is expected. Between two and three million dollars will- be released, here one way and another to be reinvested in whatever seems most promising. This will give business of all kinds a powerful im pulse and give 1S91 a good scud off. Tn Good Shape. Business in real estate is more than holding its own as compared with other interests. The inquiry for small properties is quite active, while there is a fair movement in large ones. Sales so far this winter break all records. Values are steady. Owners of fancy properties are holding out for an advance, but tho ma jority are satisfied with present figures. The fact that but few professional speculators were in the market Is cause for congratulation. The roaionty of buyers belong to the industrial element of the community, and their object In nine cases in ten is improvement. This gives tone and character to the market and is a guarantee of stability. Business News and Gossip. George Allen, of the East End, is figuring on a large apartment house which he proposes to build oa Fifth avenue, near the old market house, the coming spring. Wilkinsburg schools were dismissed yester day to reassemble February 1 in the new build ing. Rent for the various places used was more than the borongh could afford. This is a merry Christmas for the Manufac turers' Natural Gas Company. Yesterday morning at 10.30 tho drillers of this company struck a big gas well in Washington county. Three more are being drilled by them within a radius of a mile with good prospects. A large number of new dwellings will be ready tor occupancy by April L This Is good as far as It goes. Money is again coining this way. Twenty thousand dollars sent here from Philadelphia was placed yesterday at 5 per cent Two mortgazes for JI5.000 each wero on file yesterday. Twelve of 32 were for purchase money. The handsomest young man connected with the real estate business in Pittsburg bought two pug dogs yeeterday as a Christmas gift tor his best girl. Bankers say there is very little counterfeit money afloat in Pittsbarg. There is plenty of It West, however. The streets were so crowded with traffic yes terday as to lead strangers to think sometning unusual was going on. Being a regular occur rence, citizens paid no attention to it. Twenty-five dwellings are nearing completion in Johnstown. The demand for houses there Is in excess of the supply Mr. Walter Lincoln is finishing a handsome dwelling on the corner of Graham and Clai bourne streets. People were too busy with Christmas things yesterday to think of building permits. None were issued. Movements In Realty. M. F. Hippie & Co. sold for W. G. Theiss to Dr. L J. Holiday goods coull have been sold much more readily yesterday than stocks. Nobody wanted them, and after the second call thn Exchange was declared closed until the usual time tor meeting to-morrow morning. Every body talked Christmas, and Henry M. Long, who wielded the gavel, took care that business should not interfere with the prevailing senti ment. The only sale on call was 100 shares of Central Traction at9 Between calls lOsharcs of Electric brought 13. Themarket developed nothing original in tiro way of news or gossip, and figures were practically unchanged. The weakness was perhaps a little less pronounced, leading some to think that bottom had been reached, and that the next change would be for the better. M0HEY MA3KET. The Banks Well Equipped for Entering Upon the New Year. Nens was a scarce article at the local banks yesterday, but this was really good ne. tor if there had been trouble of any kind it would have come to the surface. The demand for loans has been so moderate for some time and the policy of the banks so conservative in accepting new business, that it is believed all of them have materially strengthened their position during the month.' It is certain that some of them have. Now that the last settlement of the year is out of the way, they will feel free to enlarge the field ot their operations. Brokers will soon be able to obtain all the money they need. Clearings were large yesterday, footing up $2,008,422 24, showing a flourishing condition of trade, of which that in holiday goods as con spicuously heavy. Balances were $241,422 48. The total sales ot stocks at New York yester day wero 85,360 shares, including: Atchison, 6,920; Lake bhore 0.530: Louisville and Nashville 3.600; ot, Paul 7,895: Union Pacific 9.760. The Holidays Make a Very Dull Market The Leading Feature is a Sudden Auim ation iu Lead Trust Rumors of Dividends. New York, Dec 21. The stock market to day presented little of interest in any way, and there was more attention paid to Christmas festivities than to business, and especially during the altcruoon. The bears, bonever, were tho only active brokers in the market, and the same professional tone and narrow dealings characterized trading throughout. The pressure on a few stocks resulted in the loss of small fractions in the forenoon, and a portion of this loss was regained later in tbe day; but in no stock on the recular list was the extreme fluctuation for more than per cent. Tne street looks for no activity in business until after the first of tho year. The effect of the late Vauderbilt statements was tbe strength displayed by Lake Shore, although its advanco was not sufficient to please many people. That it will range higher in tho future as a 6 per cent stock, however, there are fow to doubt. The creat feature of the day was the unusual activity and strength in the Lead Trust, which was bought by the insiders, and principally on tbe rumor that a dividend will be declared soon. It rose from 16?f to 17Js. closing at its highest point. Later there was a sport in the Tennessee coal, but no other feature of inter est outside of the renewed weakness in silver, which retired cents, occurred. The weakness was most apparent in Union Pacific and St. Paul, each of which retired per cent in the early trading, but failed to de cline further, and late in the day recovered a fraction. Tbe market finally closed intensely dull and stoady at the improvement. Lead and Tennessee coal are each up 1 per cent, but uo other change ot note occurred. The business in railroad bonds was equally limited, reaching only $768,000 for the entire day, and the few changes of importance are almost entirely in tho inactive issue, and com pare with sales some time ago. Even in stocks there was a marked lack of feature, and among the advances Jersey Central general registered 5i are up 2 per cent, at 106; Lackawanna and Western 5s, Sat 107,. New Jersey Midland firsts lost 2Ji, at 109?. The Post bays: Tne flattering reports and dividends of tbe Vauderbilt roads yesterday made an impression on the minds of speculators and Investors which will show its effects after the holidays. Trade during the first half of the week has been very active, making up lor lost time of last week, caused by tho snow blockade. All commission men report strong demand for everything in produce lines. Supply of poultry is scarcely np to demand, and turkeys have been advanced. Shippers of turkey have large faith fn Pittsburg's Christmas capacity, but this season their faith lias not been equal to the situation, and all offerings were eagerly taken at much higher prices than prevailed at Thanksgiving. It is not often that stock of turkeys is so well cleaned up at the commis sion houses as to-day. Supply of Western eegs exceeds demand and marketsare weak.
